Topic: SJS's One At-Large Birth

So how or who will the SJS Commissioners decide on the one at-large birth into the NorCal playoffs.
According to the Sac-Joaquin Section 2024 Basketball Format Rules it says: "The last spot will be filled by 1 at-large birth according to the MaxPreps rankings."

What's interesting though is this:
Of the schools that did NOT reach the semi-finals of the SJS playoffs, Lincoln-Stockton has the highest MaxPreps rating as of 2/19/2024 at 22.54. BUT Lincoln-Stockton lost at home in the 1st round of the section playoffs to #12 seed Davis. Lincoln-Stockton was the #5 seed.

Right behind Lincoln-Stockton in the latest MaxPreps rankings is Antelope, who lost in the 2nd round to Oak Ridge (at Oak Ridge), by a score of 56-57. Antelope's MaxPreps rating is 22.43, and was a #6 seed.

So who gets into the NorCal playoffs birth--Lincoln or Antelope? Anybody know?

That’s a great question. Based on how it is written it would seem to be Lincoln-Stockton.

And does the SJS back fill if Folsom and St Mary’s both go to Open?

Just got it confirmed it is antelope. Rule includes you have to win your first round game

If Streak is correct.

Then that seems like the proper choice. Gotta win a game at least right? And I believe most (outside of the Lincoln-Stockton people) would agree.

Is this D1 only?
No. The one at-large birth is for the entire SJS, which includes all divisions. Just one berth. The SJS is allotted 23 slots to advance to the NorCals. Divisions 1-5 bring both finalists and semi-finalists teams (5 divisions x 4 teams = 20). Only the finalists in Division 6 advance to the NorCals (2 teams). That leaves only one more slot--the one at-large berth.

Each section is allotted a certain number of slots, and they are not the same number. The Section with the best format to advance to the NorCals (that I like), is the North Coast Section. My opinion is once you get to the NorCals, "Competitive Equity" is used, NOT "Divisional Equity."

Thus, I feel to be competitive you don't want the two semi-finalist losers in divisions 4 & 5 to advance. If a Division 4 or 5 team is so good, they would be put in the Open Division or moved up to a higher division.

The SJS is very different than the NCS and CCS. The SJS's best, most competitive teams are either Division 1 or 2. The SJS doesn't have the "private-school, small school" power teams that the Bay Area has. Thus, using a similar BUT NOT EXACT NCS NorCal format, the SJS could have a four-team Open Division (like, Folsom, St. Mary's, Oak Ridge, and McClatchy). They would all automatically advance to the NorCals (total of 4).

Divisions 1-3, the two finalists and semifinalists advance (total of 12). Divisions 4-6, only the two finalists automatically advance (total of 6). That leaves one at-large berth in any division to advance based on a selected criteria, like winning the first round in sections and having the highest MaxPreps ranking. Just my opinion for the SJS to be more competitive.

NCS championship division teams will be the NCS representatives to the Northern California, CIF Championships. All six (6) teams competing in the NCS Open Division, the final two (2) teams competing in NCS Divisions 1-3, and the final four (4) teams competing in NCS Divisions 4-6 will receive automatic berths in the appropriate division, if such a berth is allowed. The NCS is currently allotted 25 entries, including any teams selected to the Open Division and Division 6. The 25th entry will be assigned to the highest seeded semifinal losing team in Divisions 1-3 only. In the event of a tie between highest seeded semifinal losing teams, NCS staff will use the established at-large & seeding criteria to select the final entry or entries.
