WCAL Football 2018 - San Jose Merc All Bay Area Team

Good run-down on Palma and their roster situation NorCal. I remember Palma & Serra playing some very good games in past years' and some of their very good teams. For those of you unfamiliar Palma had the 2nd best/longest win streak at one time in NorCal behind DLS. Palma played the DLS Spartans to a 7-7 tie game in 2004 when 2 weeks later DLS would win over Mitty by 49-0. The Palma football program has quite a history & the below article is a great read - check out Palma's win/loss records at bottom of article.

Indeed. Palma, especially under the guidance of former coach Norm Costa, was once a bonafide NorCal power. Let's not forget where Costa came from: Holy Cross HS and Marello Prep, both closed Santa Cruz schools. He was a small-school guy. But he made Palma into something big.

I was on Coach Costa's first team he coached at Palma. Great man and true definition of a coach. Palma was also power under current coach Carnazo as well where they won CCS top titles.

Mitty 1-0 hosts Menlo-Atherton 1-0 Friday 7:00 PM

Both teams had impressive wins in their first games with Mitty unexpectedly having an easy time in a blow-out win over Oakdale by 42-14 while M-A took care of business in shutting out Bellarmine by 28-0 [so both wins were by identical spreads of 28 points]. Looking at the 2 games I give a slight edge in wins to Mitty. While M-A won big over the Bell’s we know Bellarmine was weak last season and appears to be no better this season or possibly dropped a bit further in talent. Mitty was a slight underdog in some projections and among Oakdale fans & won big over Oakdale who’d already won big in their opener the week before by 49-0 over Sutter [while Sutter is anything but a powerhouse it did give Oakdale the benefit of having played a game]. M-A has loads of talented players with high expectations from many of their fans as was the case last season. In 2017 M-A went 7-5 with Bay League losses to both Aragon & HMB. It was an up & down season for the M-A Bears who were expected to battle for the league title early on. In the 2017 game between these same 2 teams Mitty got a few lucky breaks and prevailed by 30-23 over M-A.

So what to expect in this game. Both teams have some good returning players. Looking at the player rosters M-A has the size advantage and could be the more physical of the teams. Mitty on the other hand has the returning soph player of the year in the WCAL in QB Shamir Bey. Bey accounted for 5 TD’s in last weeks win passing for 4 and running for 1. Mitty also has 2 returning RB’s from last season & a WR. So in my estimation Mitty has the edge in skill players. M-A has a new QB in junior Justin Anderson 6’0-170 who had a good game against the Bell’s completing some passes with no INT’s and was the Bear’s top rusher with 75 yards [6.8 YPC avg], so an athletic type QB along the lines of Mitty’s QB Bey. M-A’s offense had a nice mix of passing to rushing, but primarily relies on its run game using QB Anderson & 2 RB’s. From last weeks game my take is Mitty has the better passing game while M-A is more reliable on the ground. Both defenses played well yet I don’t see either team being shut-out in this one, though Mitty may have some difficulty rushing against the Bears. If Mitty can stop or slow down M-A’s run game and force M-A into passing situations it will be to the Monarch’s favor. Mitty is an improved team over 2017 and a much better team than the Bell’s. This week we find out if M-A is the real deal.

Prediction: Mitty 28-20 over M-A

I remember when Mark Tennis was compiling that profile. I mentioned he should contact Carnazzo to do the profile (they were putting together profiles on many teams) and the schools (including Palma) paid them to do it as it was a project during that summer to update the stats of the schools and the program histories were profiled on CalHiSports. There were quite a few interesting profiles and school histories. I attended all the games mentioned. Still think Louis Amaral may have been Palma's greatest QB - not the greatest passer (although he could throw the ball well) but just unbelievable leader and gamer. He played at US Davis (safety) although I thought he could have played in the PAC 10 at the time (and should have tried to play QB). Louis' younger brothers are still coaches at Palma (or at least one on varsity and is probably the aire apparent to take over for Carnazzo when Carnazzo retires as head coach leaves - Nororian (defensive coordinator may also be in line). Palma coaching line as big foundation from Coach Costa - many played for him). Louis had good size and was fast and athletic (His father John Sr was also a head coach of the program tbefore Costa).

Those Oak Grove championships were both great close games. Oak Grove had a great QB at that time. I always remember the Mitty championship. Mitty was overwhelming favorites - undefeated. I remember all the coaches were wearing shorts and it was freezing cold and Palma physically manhandled that Mitty team and they were in shock in the beginning and didn't recover. The tie against DLS was a defensive struggle. Neither team could get anything going. I remember Terrence Kelly and Cam Colvin were on that DLS team. Met alot of the DLS players at the Nike camp which I used to work at at the time. Met Pete Carole at that camp as well.

Coach Angelo Ross also came to Palma with Coach Costa. Coach Ross still has ties to the program and coached with Costa as an assistant at Holly Cross and Morello Prep. Morello Prep closed in 1988 and Holly Cross high school closed in 1970 (elementary school and junior high still open).

I see a realistic path for Mitty going 8-2 this year. They've got a great coaching staff and talented skill players.

Wins - Oakdale, MA, Acalanes, VC, Bell, Riordan, SHC, SI
Losses - St Francis / Serra (maybe they steal one)

M-A needs a win tomorrow to legitimize themselves again after last year.

ncpfan - Mitty-MA a tough game to call & while I'm picking Mitty by a slim margin it could go either way. The game has a lot of importance with both teams having high expectations & a win or loss could set the tone for the rest of the season for both teams - more of a pre-season playoff game IMO..

St. Ignatius 0-1 hosts Campolindo 1-0 Saturday 1:00 PM

S.I. certainly had the opportunity and momentum early in last week’s game up 14-0 on Palo Alto. Unfortunately S.I. couldn’t hold the lead and Paly took over in the 2nd ½ to win 21-14. Things will not get any easier facing Campolindo, a well run program and a team rated slightly higher than Palo Alto. In Campo’s first game they won over Marin Catholic by 35-21. The big edge here for Campo is their Jr. QB Grant Harper who had an outstanding day vs Marin Catholic, throwing for almost 370 yards with 5 TD’s & completing 60% of his attempts. If S.I.’s secondary is a weak spot then Harper could have a field day. There was one unusual aspect of Campo’s game last week in that Sr. Max Schoenberger WR 6’1-185 had his best HS game to date. Schoenberger caught 8 passes for 222 yards & 4 TD’s. S.I. will need to double up on this WR if any chance of slowing down Campo’s offense. Campolindo’s run game did not fare well against MC so S.I. may be able to contain that to degree. The 2 keys are pressure on the Campo QB and can S.I. outscore Campolindo with the weapons they have? If S.I. can limit Campo to 2 fewer scores than Marin Catholic did then the Wildcats will still have to score 21+ to win. S.I. will need some luck and a few lucky breaks to take this game.

Prediction: Campo 28-14 over S.I.

Oakdale was the weakest team that I have seen in some time. They looked like a Frosh team in size. MA should handle Mitty rather easily if they don't shoot themselves with penalties.

"I'm picking Mitty by a slim margin."

"M-A should handle Mitty rather easily if they don't shoot themselves with penalties."

OK, what is it?

Intriguing comments on both sides of the discussion reading the various threads. "MA should handle Mitty easily", while other state predictions of Mitty 49-7 as well as Mitty ahead with a running clock vs MA. Some from new posters making first posts [always interesting] and others, well not sure of their opinions as no one knows exactly how good/bad either Oakdale or Bellarmine is. Using the data available this does not appear that it will be a blow-out on either side. I don't mind the opinions as long as they are backing it up with some sort of facts or WHY one team is going to dominate the other. I do agree Oakdale did not look like DLS, but then again neither did Bellarmine. I posted my review of why I picked Mitty & it is by a slim margin and my pick is based upon the Mitty QB Shamir Bey. Both are good teams and should be a game worth seeing.

WCAL Football 2018 – Previews of Upcoming Games

Riordan 0-1 vs SRV 1-1 @ Terra Nova 7:00 PM

The Crusader’s will have their hands full vs the San Ramon Valley Wolves at Terra Nova Sat nite. While this SRV does not appear as explosive as SRV teams of the last several years’ they should not be taken likely. SRV won against Heritage by 56-14 and lost to a good Monterey Trail team by 27-7. Despite the loss by 20 points SRV is not likely to resemble Salesian who took down the Crusader’s last week by 49-48. SRV is primarily a rushing team with Tristan Sinclair 6’0-205 [8.6 APC] as their featured RB. SRV rotates 4 other RB’s who al get carries as well. The QB Brandan Cammisa 5’11-190 does not throw a lot and SRV utilizes a short passing game spreading the ball around to 5 different WR’s. So this is a slow grind it out SRV team Riordan will be facing. For Riordan to have a chance of winning the Crusader’s will have to stop SRV’s run game or at least slow them down & limit to short gains. It’s about ball control and Riordan will need some big plays again this week without giving up another 49 points.

Prediction: SRV 42 – 14 over Riordan

WCAL Football 2018 – Previews of Upcoming Games

Serra 0-1 hosts Elk Grove 0-1 Saturday 1:00 PM

The Padres face another team looking for their first win of the season when they host “The Thundering Herd on Saturday. Last week Elk Grove lost to a good Inderkum of Sacramento team by 37-13. Elk Grove was down by 28-13 at the ½ and then was shut-out in the 2nd ½. Watching the film clips there is nothing flashy about the Elk Grove offense which utilizes a short gain run game with an occasional pass. Elk Grove should have its hands full dealing with Serra’s multi-faceted offense and the Padres D will not be facing a passing game such as they saw with Serra-Gardena. This game should result in the Padres first win of the season and anything else I’d regard as an upset.

Prediction: Serra 42-14 over Elk Grove

Rmbr, good preview of this Sat night's game vs SRV. Salesian's offense centered around its talented mobile QB as they primarily ran the ball and utilized the short slant pass in the red zone as the Crusaders stacked up the box. Riordan defense will need to do a significantly better job in attacking, the line getting significant push and qb rush, LBs filling the gaps and stopping the run, and avoiding unnecessary offsides flags. SRV's Stanford-bound RB/LB, Tristan Sinclair, is a beast and will need to be accounted for throughout the game.
Riordan's offense needs to continue to attack. Its junior qb, in his first complete game start, after suffering a season-ending injury did well in passing for almost 300 yards with 3 TDs and gaining 70 yards on the ground. QB #8 needs continued improvement in looking for his second and third receivers and let the game "slow down". Most critical is also to limit turnovers as they suffered 3 fumbles and an INT early in the Salesian game which put them in a 2 TD hole throughout. Will be a long night if this disturbing trend continues. Interestingly, Monterey Trail team's roster is only 32 players, run-heavy, but all can play and attack on both sides of the ball. Keep the score within striking distance and this will be a good sign of improvement heading to the Napa game.

TJ Ewing's 32 are different than most modest rosters you will see. He runs off all the derelicts and smokers. He ends up with a battle hardened bunch that get after people. It has taken years for him to foster that model. Most coaches don't have the stones to do it this way. One of the best in Norcal in my opinion.

Good evaluation jordan of Riordan and the mistakes they cannot afford to make against a good team such as SRV.
MIssed that part about SRV RB Tristan Sinclare 6'0-205 going to Stanford [so he must be the real deal]. That's too small to play LB at next level unless he put on 20-25 lbs, so is Stanford looking at him as a RB? If so he must have some "wheels", which is not good for the Crusaders' [no wonder Sinclare has an 8.6 YPC avg - Yikes!]

He’s about 6’2-6’3ish

That's a good time for 6'2-6'3 & around 205-210 [quite a load to bring down]

jordan - after watching that video of Sinclair I hope the Riordan offensive coordinator doesn't have many "designed" keeper plays using the young Crusader QB ..

Rmbr26 Upcoming Game Predictions:

Clovis North 20-7 over Bell’s
Palma 35-20 over SHC
SF 35-7 over Oak Grove
Pleasant Valley 20-13 over Valley Christian
Mitty 28-20 over MA
Campolindo 28-14 over S.I.
SRV 42-14 over Riordan
Serra 42-14 over Elk Grove

Point Spreads:

Bell's +13
SHC +15
SF -28
VC +7
Mitty -8
S.I. +14
Riordan +28
Serra -28

Anyone care to bet against the spreads?

He’s being recruited as a LB. Hes taller than 6’0.

Stanford has their RB recruit in Austin Jones of Bishop O’Dowd. Cool to see a national recruiting program like Stanford getting some local kids in this class.

ncpfan - having watched the video I noticed most of the highlights are of Sinclair on defense flying around the field. From a RB stand point he appears a bit too tall and runs upright, so LB appears more what he may be suited for.
Seeing that video I hope the Riordan QB doesn't throw any "floaters" over the middle..

Rmbr, I hear ya! Lol! Riordan has a promising jr. rb that ran for 2 TDs. Good size, speed and can break tackles. 2 soph qbs are vying for the backup qb role with one of them back going down to JVs to get snaps. . There are 2 power backs/lbs that will be eligible week #2 of WCAL that should immediately contribute while bolstering their roster depth.

For the first time in years, WCAL teams will finish the pre-season with a losing record vs. CCS public schools. So far, the record is 1-4. There is one game left: Homestead at SHC. Menlo-Atherton has done major damage, going 2-0 vs. the WCAL (Bellarmine and Mitty both losing to the Bears).

"Pleasant Valley Holds on vs Valley Christian"

I googled the game to get the score and first thing that came up was the above article headline.
OK that's what the headline of article in the Chico Enterprise Record says, but not quite the case. The article by one "Sharon Martin" incorrectly states the final outcome: VC won by 27-14.
I think someone needs to explain to Sharon just what that phrase means - I know what my first reaction was..Lol!

In her defense she was sorta quoting the coach. She actually may have been trolling the coach for being happy that it wasn’t the usual drubbing VC has put on them in seasons past.

I actually thought Pleasant Valley had a shot against Valley Christian due to VC's lack of scoring against Wilcox in 10-6 loss last week. I'm thinking now that Wilcox defense was highly underrated.

Maybe but I think its the other way - PV is not very good this year.
