VC is dominating PV from Chico 21-0 as expected, game might be over by halftime. It's the start of 2nd qtr an PV hasn't moved the ball bast their 30yd line.

Serra quarterback Daylin Mclemore (2) drops back to pass against Menlo-Atherton in the second quarter of a high school football game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. "Serra Routs Menlo Atherton 38-18, Puts on a Show at Levi 's Stadium - Serra's senior Nate Sanchez scores all 5 TD's for the Padres"

Here's the article from this mornings Merc News: https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/09/06/serra-routs-menlo-atherton-puts-on-a-show-at-levis-stadium/

Last Nights Scores as WCAL Teams lose 3 of 4 games:

* In the NorCal game of the week Serra erases doubts about the quality of its win over Pittsburg last week with a 38-13 thrashing of a very good M-A team by 38-13.

* Valley Christian steam rolled Pleasant Valley in a 37-0 shut-out.

* St. Francis drops to 0-2 suffering a 48-0 shut-out at DLS. The Spartans held a 35-0 halftime lead and the Lancers never threatened in the game. As with last week SF had difficulty getting anything going on offense.

* The SHC Irish jumped to a 14-0 lead over Palma early on and looked good. Palma tied it up 14-14 and then SHC had the ball at the Palma 2 with first & goal ready to take the lead again. Instead the Irish turned it over and Palma took the lead 21-14. Palma would go on to win 35-21 scoring 35 unanswered points against SHC.

* Not much info other than the score: Clovis North 37-0 over the Bells which tells us all we need to know.

VC 2-0
Serra 2-0
SF 0-2
SHC 0-2
Bells 0-2

Gettin' Ugly as they say for Mitty..

It's Marin Catholic 28-3 in the 3rd quarter after MC QB runs untouched 28 yards up the middle for another TD.

BTW - there is no sound to this game on NFHS so at least they're consistent - either the game is not on as advertised or sound or camera problems. Whomever is operating the camera can't follow the ball - Shamir Bey rolled out to throw a pass & suddenly he was out of the picture frame - camera switches to end zone where Mitty WR is waving arms - oops Shamir Bey throws an INT, but camera doesn't show it - only a MC player with ball running the other way for about 70 yards until he is out of camera view. Can't take much more, think there's a re-run of Blackish on...

I hear ya, I tuned out after the 1st qtr.

No sound
No score updates
Poor camera angles

I’m disappointed with NFHS, not only does there website stink, it’s slow as molasses. Many games aren’t broadcast as stated. Some games have no announcers, not even the overhead PA is audible. There appears to be little proactive quality control, everything is basically oh well, we kind of don’t care. Our business model is cash and dash.

Exhibit A...

Hi there,

I apologize for the inconvenience. I have notified our production team of the issue. They should be able to get the event up and running properly in a moment. Feel free to let me know of any other issues you may have.

Thanks

We are now in the 4th qtr and the camera has covered most of the parking lot and Alameda De Las Pulgas. Put simply it's almost unwatchable, the camera is constantly out of focus on plays. Can someone provide this feedback to host site. Thanks

P.s. Menlo Atherton vs. Bellarmine hs varsity football stream recorded 3 hours of a vacant basketball court. Thxs

There goes 10 points... After Mitty beat Palma in their shootout and McClymonds beat Marin Catholic, the last thing I expected was for Mitty to get blown out by the Marin Cats. Now I think SHC may do much better vs. Mitty than expected when they meet.

I hate that... Just focus-up and keep the plays centered. How hard can that be?

Current combined WCAL non-league record after Week 2: 8-8 (not exactly a sterling ledger by any stretch of the imagination). Shaping up as a two-team (or maybe three-team) race for the league title. St. Francis remains a wild care due to its very difficult schedule thus far. But, clearly, VC and Serra are heading for an early November showdown, assuming both stay healthy until then.

Riordan wins going away 39-27.
The score was 39-19 late in the 4th and the Riordan subs came only to suffer a turnover and Tam score its final points. When was the last time Riordan put subs in late in a game?!?
Tam scored first. After that the Crusader power running attack basically controlled the game throughout. Crusader D bent but did not break. The team still is learning Coach Modeste’s system but a steady improvement from last week. Penalties on the O line and needless fouls still need to be cleaned up before league play. Very good performance by Riordan’s rbs - Ruth and the soph Kefu. Tam could not stop the 300lb back as he literally gained 5 yards falling forward. The Kefu Brothers both scored along with Ruth and one of the receivers but do not recall the player.
Its first 2 wins bests last year’s win total - Crusaders moving in a positive direction.

...and Riordan really doesn't have much team speed, quality special teams or even a QB or WR's who provide a semblance of a passing attack...watch Modeste when he gets some real talent...then look out...wisely, he's using what he's got to its maximum effect (along with a reasonable schedule)...nice...

Serra appears to be slightly ahead of VC but that will be one hell of a game. SF will not compete with either but be heads and heals above the rest of the league. As expected, Mitty appeared to be a paper tiger with all the hype after beating a down Palma squad and getting trounced this afternoon. SI should finish 4th with Mitty, Riordan, SHC and the Bells having competitive games in the cellar. Take the QB off Mitty and they may go 0-8 in WCAL play. Best of luck to WCAL teams the rest of the way out!

As stated previously, Riordan is a work in progress. Modeste lost 3 starting offensive players in rb Jalen Camp and jr wr Chris Whiley transferring and sr QB/WR Adham Abdelghani to season-ending injury. Add in a new offensive and defensive scheme you are going to see fits and starts. I agree that the passing game will need to improve, but longtime Crusader Nation faithful see Modeste starting from the ground up and establishing smash mouth line play and a hard charging running game by using the physical players they have and it has worked. Tam came in with a quick strike spread offense and the Crusaders caught a glimpse of it in the second half. Riordan comes right back and marches down the field and scores inside of 2 minutes - via ground attack! This literally knocked the Hawks out as they were being physically pummeled as you could see the players with hands on hips. The same was seen at Terra Nova last week as both teams really could not stop the ground attack. Basically, it was the Crusaders that were stopping themselves. Walk before you run, as they say.
As for the WCAL, it's still VC, Serra and St. Francis fighting for the title. I see Mitty, SI, SHC, Riordan and Bellarmine duking it out for the remaining spots and are pretty much evenly matched based on each other's strengths and weaknesses. Btw both Tam and Terra Nova fans in attendance the past 2 weeks marveled at the performance of the Crusader soph, "Atu" Kefu. They were amazed how agile, athletic, fast and powerful in the way he blocked and ran for a kid that is 300lbs as he is not fat, just a big athlete! He complements Fazon Ruth and his sr brother, Lavaka, in the backfield very well and will give defenses fits. If the passing game gets successfully implemented, things could get interesting.

Lots of good info/input incl jordans write up. As for my 2-cents I watched the SF-Corona Del Mar beat down of SF and parts of the DLS "cruise-control" win over SF as well. What I'm sayin' is that those saying SF will battle VC & Serra for the WCAL title must not have watched what I saw. This is a young SF team who is not nearly as solid on D as last year and is showing struggles on offense as well. SF may well be on the same level as S.I. at this point, but def not in the top tier of WCAL from first 2 performances.

How good can this Serra team be? It’s early I know, but the season is setting up nicely for the Padres. Serra will face a stout St. Mary’s next Friday. St. Mary’s is coming off a statement win against Central Catholic. The common opponent being Pitt whom Serra stomped, St. Mary’s loss. Courtesy of Streak on St. Mary’s last week, “Jadyn Marshall had two receiving touchdowns, a rushing score and a punt return for a score in emerging as one of the top sophomores in the region”.

So far, Serra has outscored their first two opponents to the tune of 96 to 34. I’m a betting man, so I think Serra has the edge in this game (money line -160) setting them up to go for 3-0 against ranked opponents. Consider this, Serra is a notorious slow starter and will get stronger as the season unfolds.
  • 2018 1-2 pre-league. 7-5 total, loss to lancers (loaded team) x2 and then VC.
  • 2017 1-2 pre-league, reeling off an undefeated season and State bowl.
  • 2016 0-3 pre-league, 10-5 total, loss to VC early, loss by 2 in State bowl.
In this scenario Serra is 3-0 and I’m looking ahead at their schedule and what they have under the hood. Where are the holes? After two weeks of film the engine looks good;
  • Solid QB, perhaps a special player on their hands.
  • Shifty running back coming off 5td’s against Menlo alone
  • Offensive line is moving bodies
  • Stingy d-line and secondary.
  • Talent at skill positions just to name the letter L, Loville, Lataimua, Lewis
Coming back to the schedule and it reads like Walsh himself put it together in cahoots with CCS. It doesn’t get prettier than this;

Act 1. Set-up
Riordan Bellarmine and Mitty
It’s plausible Serra is 6-0, 3-0 in league play. Question marks with this Mitty team...

Act 2. Confrontation
St. Francis, Sacred Heart and the awaited Valley Christian showdown
(likely the birth of a WCAl champion).

Act. 3 Resolution
The last game of the season potentially meaningless to face off with S.I.
Time to rest starters, perhaps sneak an early peek at round two of CCS playoffs.

I realize that Valley is looking at this scenario unfolding in front of them as well but this might be a year to remember for the Padres. A little foreshadowing early is okay but hey, they could putter out come WCAL league play.

Does Serra have another transfer of note, other than David Silk? Who is the Padres' JV quarterback .... no QB listed on roster.

What other WCAL schools have transfers currently sitting out?

I may have mispoke on "several transfers" I thought I read earlier there were two, but might just be the one kid from Woodside.

Kudos to the Crusaders. With the hiring of a true professional career head coach combined with a slight dip in the overall strength of the WCAL (there are just two bonafide powerhouses right now), Riordan has a quite reasonable chance to make some noise, perhaps a final record of .500 or so in 2019. That would be a big step up for the program. Timing, as they say, is everything.

Cool site to see yesterday was Coach Mark Modeste's dad, Ron, as one of the Crusader assistant coaches with clipboard in hand. Ron Modeste was a former Riordan Head Football Coach back in the day.
With Coach Modeste playing to his roster's strength the Crusader rushing attack gained 400+ yards yesterday.
  • Jr Fazon Ruth following up last week's performance of 240, finishing with 255 yards on 24 carries
  • Soph FB, Atu, 106 yards on 12 carries
  • Jr Aden Jackson, 107 yards on 12 carries
Crusader D did their homework on Tam's passing game as its spread offense totalled 500+ yards and 8 TDs its first 2 games, the Riordan D limited the passing to 135 yards, 1 TD, 1 int.

When everyone else is airing it out, spreading the field, emphasizing speed and making football look like a video game, it's rather refreshing to watch a team hearken back to a much different era when power and sheer physicality were watchwords. OK, maybe the Riordan outlier approach (obviously necessitated by roster/skill limitations) won't bear dramatic fruit once the WCAL season commences, but it's going to be distinctly interesting to watch.

Agree, it will be interesting to watch and see this team develop. I am happy to just see improvement and the team being competitive week to week.
Terra Nova and Tam defenses were both gassed and beat up in the second half. Modeste has some good depth on the lines and does a nice job with his rotations keeping them fresh.
The underclass skills players are embracing their roles and making significant contributions.
The emphasis on offseason strength and conditioning appears to be paying off early...

RMBR26,

In the final Calpreps ranking for 2018 Riordan ended up as the CCS's #42 ranked team just behind #41 Jefferson who finished in a tie for second in the C league PAL-Lake (lower than Bellarmine's current #36 rating)

In light of that fact PALbooster I'll modify my remark to:

Here's a treat for Serra FB fans [and maybe some others as well]. I found this article by accident on my ph while while 49ers game this afternoon.

"Top 10 Serra Football Players Not Named Tom Brady or Lynn Swann"

The article is from May 2016 and so therefore omits Sitaleki "Leki" Nunn who was truly one of the best Padre football players the school has ever produced. BTW the rest on this list were pretty good as well...

Strange story. In other words, Serra football history goes back a grand total of 20 years. Really? Weak. Waste of space. Artificial. Pointless. Even Matt Dickerson is missing. A good example of someone who just didn't want to do his homework. Lazy.
