WCAL Football 2019-20 - NCP's All NorCal Team + SF Chron All Metro & Merc Teams

Over half of Bell student body is probably not physically capable /safe to play football. But they can build you a hell of a robot

Great idea. How about Bellarmine robot linemen? Now that's a provocative concept. No moaning about playing time. No worries about serious injuries. No eligibility issues. No parental interference. No concerns about kneeling during the Anthem. No need to hydrate. Robots do what they're programmed to do and they have replaceable parts in case of damage or malfunction (motion penalties, holding, etc.). Finally, in theory, the Bells would have an unlimited supply of these entities.

Even with robots, they'll still run the Wing-T. =P

Football analysis: Can Bellarmine turn things around?
The Bells, one of the CCS’s premier programs, have won just 13 games since their epic 2015 season

Dear Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J
It’s the WCAL thread on NCP reaching out to you for a College Park intervention. The year Is 2019 and we need your assistance to inform Coach Janda that leather helmets have been banned, cargo shorts are out and the double wing is not working.

P.s. Please change that mascot

Signed, concerned catholic...

Dear Santa Ball:

We feel your pain. We understand your concerns. We were not thrilled when Coach Walsh showed up at Serra in 2001. We were further distressed a year later when Coach Machado and Valley Christian got shoved down our Jesuit throats into what is now the Mostly Catholic Athletic League, the MCAL. Those two unfortunate moves went a long way to diminishing our school's happy football situation (along with St. Francis, of course). We continue to struggle to adjust to this unpleasant condition. But we do try. Reports that our staff is considering installing the Single Wing are incorrect. We remain committed to prep football's best practices. And, no, our patron saint here in College Park is not Amos Alonzo Stagg. We appreciate your interest in this matter.

Best regards,

The Bellarmine Administration, S.J.

P.S. Donations can be sent to us, care of our HQ

Lol, all that’s missing is the letterhead.

Very good Santa Ball & best post of the day! Only thing you forgot to mention "The forward pass was legalized in football in 1906" & therefore OK to "uncork" a few passes each game - keep the defense on their toes so to speak..
Though would make Woody Hayes/Ohio State cringe as the recognized originator of the "3-yards and a cloud of dust" expression..
[Good "Ol Woody - only major college coach to punch an opposing player after an interception on national TV]..

Hah! Cohenry beat me to the punch as I was typing away. Good post as well Col & keep 'em comin'....

That’s it, i can’t take it anymore, I’m sending a telegram to Coach Janda within the next fortnight.

Too funny, “uncork one”. Wasn’t that left hook woodys swan song. Lol

The Bells down in 3rd quarter by 43-0 vs Serra last season: " I know AND they know its 3rd & 9 and everyone is expecting a pass & that's exactly WHY we'll go with the Wing-T run up the middle. We are what they thought we were..."

This Weeks Season Opening Games – August 30-31

Friday Nite Lights
* Mitty @ Palma 7 PM
* Riordan @ Terra Nova 7 PM
* Bells @ M-A 7:30 PM
* SHC @ Acalanes 7 PM
* SF hosts Corona Del Mar 7 PM
* VC hosts Wilcox 7 PM

Saturday
* Serra hosts Pitt 1:00 PM
* S.I. hosts Palo Alto 1:00 PM

Mitty vs Palma: intriguing match-up between 2 big question marks in the CCS. Mitty with 3rd year starting QB ranked as #1 QB in WCAL and big things expected of the Monarchs. Similar expectations last season in ’18 which did not materialize for Mitty & this first game is huge indicator. Palma went 1-2 last season and returns solid core except QB [but 3 QB’s on roster and any one could emerge as the new leader of Chieftains. Palam roster is also noticeably larger than ’18 with more depth. I expect a close game and this one could go either way.
Slight Edge = Mitty

Riordan vs Terra Nova: a much anticipated game for Riordan players & fans as the debut of new head coach Mark Modeste as Riordan’s enters a new era of football. The Riordan squad and coaches should be pumped for this one and the adrenaline will be flowing.
Edge = Riordan

Bells vs Menlo-Atherton: the Bells have the unenviable task of entering the lion’s lair traveling to M-A’s home turf. The Bells looking for a resurgence of some sort will face one of the top teams in CCS who went 13-2 last season including taking home a state title in 3-AA. M-A looks to be very tough again this season and the Bells are a HUGE question mark after 3 substandard seasons in a row. Bells will do well to keep this game competitive and hopefully Coach Janda will have a few tricks up his sleeve that will confuse and confound the M-A Bears.
Big Edge = M-A

SHC vs Acalanes: the Irish have a chance to start their season with a win although this game is not a given by any means. Acalanes played Mitty within a score last season and appears slightly down this season while the Irish should be improved with their returning QB.
Edge = SHC

SF vs Corona Del Mar: the Lancers should have their hands full come Friday nite vs the CDM “Sea Kings” [what on earth is a Sea King anyway?]. Corona Del Mar is ranked higher than any WCAL team and expected to win their very competitive league this season. CDM was very good last season at 11-2-1 and returns some of their best players incl. QB. SF lost quite a bit to graduation and this game should be telling for the Lancers’. The week following SF travels to Spartanville & could be an 0-2 start for SF.
Big Edge = Corona Del Mar

VC vs Wilcox: a rematch of last season’s opening season game in which Wilcox shocked the Warrior’s in a hard fought 10-6 win. At the time no one knew just how good Wilcox was and many fans were predicting an easy VC win. This is somewhat the case again going into this game. Wilcox lost quite a bit to graduation, but by no means should be overlooked by VC.VC has most of its core back from last season and looks to improve on last years’ record.
Edge = VC

Serra vs Pitt: without looking it up I believe Pitt has vanquished Serra the last 4 times they’ve played. Pitt traveled to Stockton last week as the underdog and took down a highly regarded St. Mary’s team by 42-35 which also does not bode well for the Padres. A number of questions will be answered in this game for Serra. Will the Padre D be better than ’18 and be able to contain the high octane Pirate offense? With Serra’s first “new” field general at QB will the Padres be able to generate some wide-open offense? And how will Serra’s O-line perform against a very physical Pitt “D” ?? Pitt has a tough game already under their belt and Serra had better be well prepared for the Pirates looking to improve to 2-0 at Serra’s expense.
Edge = Pitt

S.I. vs “Paly” – HUGE opportunityfor the Wildcats even though they enter this game as the underdog. Palo Alto had a 10-2 season in ’18, but graduated their QB along with some other talented players. While S.I. went the opposite direction with a 3-8 season for ’18 S.I. almost took down Palo Alto in the season opener finally losing by 21-14. S.I. had leads of 7-0 and then 14-7 in the game with Paly tying up the game late in the 3rd quarter. S.I. had chances but numerous mistakes including a Wildcat fumble on the Paly 15-yard line did not help their cause. Paly scored with just over a minute left to take the lead for the first time & win the game.
Edge = S.I. [if the Wildcats can limit mistakes]

* If the above plays out as expected the WCAL will be 5-3 or 4-4 after these first 8 games. I see a “best case”scenario of WCAL being 6-2 and a “worst case” scenario of 1-7 [which is possible as many of these games are expected to be close contests while Bells, SF & Serra face uphill battles.

Dr. Ramble: Have you done your WCAL predicted order of finish yet?

WCAL Football 2019-20 Predicted Order of Finish BY Teams:

1. Valley Christian: everyone’s pick including mine with most of the teams important players returning and reinforcements from 2 excellent JV & Frosh teams. There may be a large gap between VC & the rest of the WCAL this season.

2. Mitty: yes I know that Mitty struggled vs “The Big 3” [VC, SF & Serra], but the landscape has changed this season. SF lost the most talent of any team & Serra has question marks at the QB position as well as OL/DL’s. Mitty also has the best QB in the WCAL and a dual-threat one at that.

3. Serra: Padres are a huge question mark with the change at QB and no established consistent run game last season. While Padres have a LOT of skill players their pass game is in question and their anemic run game against the better opponents must be vastly improved. FYI – Padres rushed for a grand total of 25 yards vs Pitt in last years game [so we will find out very quickly].

4. St. Francis: its difficult to go against SF since they won league last season & lost by 1-point to VC in the CCS Open championship. That was last year though and things are quite different this season. VC returns the most impact players while SF lost the most. This could be a down year for SF, but then again they had an excellent JV & Frosh last year so they could prove me wrong.

5. SHC: the Irish look to be improved this year and the team in general with more experience/returning players including Cian Dowling at QB should rule SF.

6. St. Ignatius: this was a difficult pick as I believe Riordan will be much improved this season with more returning talent than S.I. The deciding factor was how S.I. dominated Riordan last season & not sure how much of that will carry over into this season.

7. Riordan: new coach, lots of returning players & bigger roster, new facilities up & coming and most important a new attitude possibly – WINNING! Although its still early on in the coaching change there has got to be excitement on the Crusader campus for this season. Riordan will see an upswing in its program which should continue for the foreseeable future.

8. Bellarmine: before you can say “how can this be?” I’ll tell you. Bells entire program was in a funk last season. The varsity suffered from both lack of talent & depth on both sides of the ball. Many have questioned Coach Janda’s game plan, however he can only work with the talent he has. Bells have now had 3 dreadful season’s in a row and while a bigger roster for this season the question will be quality rather than quantity foremost. Riordan returns far more talent than Bells and looks to be a notch above the vaunted Bellarmine program currently. If a “running clock” occurs in the M-A game it spells big trouble for the once feared Bells.

Serra's new QB reportedly picked up an offer from SJS, more than likely as a DB.

Every year SJS seems to recruit a few players from the WCAL. Here are the current WCAL players on the SJS roster:

Leki Nunn - WR - Serra
Kyane Schmidt - OL - VC
Charlie BOstic - CB - VC
Brett Foley - TE - Mitty
Trevor Robbins - OL - Mitty
Viliami Fehoko - DE - SF
Cade Hall - DL - Bells
Jackson Burrill - TE - Bells
Brenden Manigo - RB - Bells

A bit of info regarding "Pitt" and the game tomorrow vs Serra for those fans attending [unfortunately I am out of town. but hoping someone will post some update reports].

Pitt's new QB Jerry Johnson tied a school record in his first game by throwing 6-TD's. Johnson completed 21 of 31 for 368 yards, 6-TD's, 1-Int for 368 yards throwing to 7 different WR's [Pitt gained 114 yards on the ground]. The 2 main WR's are #2 Johnny Blackmon and #6 James Battle. The Padres would be wise not to kick-off to #3 B. Andre Pierce who killed St. Mary's last week with 3 long KO returns. Pitt features a wide open passing game with multiple quick WR's and Blackmon being the "big-play" guy. Looking at their stats they throw a LOT of long passes so the QB must have a pretty decent arm. Hope Serra's secondary has the speed to match up with these quick WR's.

M-A up 28-14 over Bells in 2nd quarter.
SF down by 14-0 in 2nd quarter to Corona Del Mar

St. Francis is in deep trouble as CDM is completing every pass they are attempting.
After the last TD CDM attempted an offside kick on kick-off and recovered 18 yards down-field after a Lancer player muffed catching a "roller". Next play CDM throws a 45 yard bomb caught in end zone but Lancers get lucky on a holding call. Corona Del Mar has an excellent QB and very good AND fast WR's. SF looks to be in for a long nite. Hate to say it, but CDM is carving up the SF "D". CDM has completed the last 7-8 passes and now inside the Lancer 10-yard line.
Another quick completion and now Corona Del Mar 21-0 over SF.

Bells getting crushed by M-A as 41-14 at the 1/2.
SF not doing much better as Corona Del Mar is up 21-0 at 1/2 and SF looks bad on both sides of ball.
Mitty vs Palma is Game of the Nite tied at 21-21 and sounds like a barn-burner &with QB Shamir Bey of Mitty and Palma's star RB not disappointing fans.. sounds like a great game!

Irish have a good passing game. Cian Dowling threw at least 5 TD passes. Lincoln was late getting to Kezar for some reason. The defense looked good. They played better as the game progressed.

Update: OK, forget everything I just said. If these guys have to get clobbered by a mediocre Acalanes team with their third-string QB then they won't do anything this season. I can't imagine how they will get steamrolled by a good team.
Most of the defense is back, so I don't know why they suddenly forgot how to play. That goes for the offensive line too. They could not protect the QB at all. All he did was run away from defenders all night. All else the defense could do was get suckered by screen passes, let them get a freebie on a blown coverage and let the QB throw at will without even a modicum of coverage. Just because a team is from Contra Costa, doesn't make them De La Salle.
Outside of the play of Cian Dowling and Dylan Rogers, SHC did nothing. Also Tyrice Ivey was in street clothes. He didn't participate at the scrimmage either. (It turned out to be precautionary after a concussion). It wouldn't have made any difference anyway.

Irish, I'd loan you my lucky Harp coin but I need the mojo The season is young, lots of football and film ahead for the Irish. Qb is solid!

So Bells hammered by M-A 51-14 while SF gets clobbered by Corona Del Mar 42-14 & SHC by Acalanes in a similar score. I knew this was a young Lancers team & the outcome shows SF is down quite a bit from last season.
VC performed as expected & solid win over good Wilcox team. Mitty also answered many questions in pulling away from a feisty Palma team with one of the best RB’s in CCS.
Serra-Pitt will clear up remaining questions this afternoon.

Times article on the MA-Bells game:

https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/08/30/football-menlo-atherton-too-much-for-bellarmine-to-handle/

According to Bellarmine's football data going way back into the early 20th century, the debacle vs. M-A was one of the Bells' worst losses ever to a public school. It was 48-14 at halftime. M-A chose to run the ball up the middle in the second half. The fourth period was a running clock. M-A would be a serious title contender in the WCAL. Make no mistake about that. The Bears are big, fast, deep, talented and well-organized. They feature a junior WR/kick returner/occasional safety who, in many ways, is the reincarnation of the multi-faceted Lynn Swann who played his final season at Serra 50 years ago. Troy Franklin is worth the price of admission. He is being recruited by nearly every big-time college program on the map. The Bears face off with Serra next Friday night at Levi Stadium.

Its only the first quarter of the Serra - Pitts game, but Serra is looking pretty good. the Score is 21-7 with 3 minutes left in the 1st. Serra may challenge VC for the #1 spot in WCAL.

Maybe, perhaps....some nice positivity...I think the IRISH have improved under Coach Mac and I have a feeling running the football program without a JV team can actually help for debatable reasons. But what about this year...who will be the main back...Reagans, Uperasa or a little of Jackson at tailback and receiver? You don't think they will bring up Mixon right away, do you? Of course, the other impediments...St. Francis, Serra just to mention a few and oh yeah, VC..
Looks like the go-to back will be Reagans. No Jackson. It's obvious he wants to concentrate on basketball. Uperasa is likely out for the season with an injury. I hope the Frosh are good.
