Also, give your "best all time team" from your city/area...no rules just whoever you think was the best.

Best All-Time Bay Area (incl San Jose, East Bay, San Francisco)
Bill Russell
Jason Kidd
Phil Chenier
Paul Silas
Charles Johnson
Gary Payton
Damian Lillard
Aaron Gordon
Kurt Rambis
Jeremy Lin

I would put Antonio Davis on this team over Aaron Gordon

Don Barksdale played for Berkeley High in the early 40's. He was a pioneer as an African-American basketball player, becoming the first to be named NCAA All-American, the first to play on a United States men's Olympic team, and the first to play in a NBA All-Star Game. He is in the Naismith Hall of Fame. He played at UCLA where his number is retired. He was a member of the Baltimore Bullets and the Boston Celtics. Different generation but needs to be on the list.

Nice post this is awesome information thanks for sharing.

Rich Kelley (Woodside HS, Stanford) and John Lambert Berkeley HS, USC) had nice NBA careers. Mark Madsen (SRV, Stanford) and Todd Lichti (Mt. Diablo, Stanford) were some studs from the Diablo Valley.

My San Jose All-Time Starting 5:

G: Rex Walters, Piedmont Hills/Independence. Before my time (the rest of my list has a recency bias), but seemed like a no-brainer right???
G: Antwon Guidry, Leigh 2001. Single greatest athlete I've ever seen in my life (basketball, football, track). Anyone from San Jose who was around at the time will agree.
G: Jayson Obazuaye, Andrew Hill 2002. CCS all-time leading scorer, played 4 years at Colorado, then overseas.
F: Aaron Gordon, Mitty 2013. Best player in San Jose hoops history (Based on HS accomplishments, NBA, etc. any criteria you want)
C: Drew Gordon, Mitty 2008. UNM/UCLA, cup of coffee with 76ers, great overseas career going now.

I would put Isaac Fontainne from Jesuit HS on the list before I would put Josiah Turner. Great talent but He was nothing but trouble wherever he went.

SF
Just a few names come to mind but I know there are tons more.
Dwayne Fontana
Teeter Marshall
Ray Kelly
Art Monk
Jaha Wilson

Nice list but can you give me a starting 5?

So there's an SF list, followed by a Riordan only list and we still can't get a Marquise Kately mention???

I've heard that the 1980's Riordan teams were absolutely loaded and would smack any team in NorCal today. Is this true? Can anyone give me any insight into how good they actually were?

Wow. Now that's a great list. Outstanding knowledge. May we respectfully mention players like Mike Farmer, Hank Luisetti, Phil Smith, Fred LaCour, Joe Ellis, Ken Sears, Tom Meschery, K.C. Jones, all from a bygone era when the Bay Area was the undisputed center of the hoops universe at the collegiate level?

... and another note, the list in question is fabulous. No argument, really. Might gently argue with Lin, but, hey, won't do so.

I grew up in Brooklyn. Greatest athlete I knew was Herbie Mays. A guy I'm sure you never heard of.
Tremendus at hoops, baseball, pool hustler, saw him run the 100 yd dash wearing shoes, against a college track athlete and barley get nipped at the tape. He made the semi finals in the middle weight division, in NYC golden gloves. Think how tough that was! I was in his corner at sunnyside gardens. Unbeatable at ping pong, I don't care what the sport was, if it moved he was in it.
Here's wishing you great hoops

So obviously this is just about those who made it to the league?

No way Berkeley greats Gene Ransom, Rupert Jones, Glenn Burke, and Marvin Buckley should be left off the list along with Castlemont's Cliff
"Treetop" Robinson and Donnie Martin.

There's so many ways to determine best player. Perhaps only taking account a player's body of work in HS only? And another group that performed well in college and in the pros? Makes for a great Forum topic...
