Wilcox-Twelve Bridges ref drama

It was a pretty botched call at the end by the officials and one that is easily correctable.

Did Wilcox get away with one the play before when it broke the huddle with 12 guys and called a timeout?

Did anyone else see the story from SFGATE? https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/bay-area-school-screwed-ref-error-football-title-19971593.php

I am sure the CIF won't do anything about it ... but man, this is a pretty egregious error from the officials and I feel like Wilcox absolutely has a right to be pissed.
It's unfortunate for Wilcox and I was surprised they didn't reset the play clock after adjusting the ball position.

But my overall sympathy for this program is measured considering what they did last year.

Just to be clear- breaking the huddle with 12 men in high school football is not necessarily a foul. It could be- but basically a replaced player has 3 seconds to start on his way out. If the substitute entered the huddle and then more than 3 seconds elapsed before the replaced player departed- then you could have an illegal substitution penalty.

Welcome to HS sports, where poor officiating is always a thing. Always has been, always will be. These guys are amateurs essentially donating their time. It is what it is.

In this particular case, the way that last kick looked, I don’t think the 5-6 yards difference would have mattered.

What I do know is, probably at least a dozen other similar bad calls occurred in that game, and occur in every game, that greatly impact the outcome yet all anyone wants to talk about is the last one that happened. They all matter.

Thanks for the extra knowledge - something I previously didn't know.

The illegal substitution infraction is very uncommon on the high school level. I cant really remember the last time I've seen that one being called. The majority of the penalties we would see during a high school game are your usual: holding, offsides, illegal procedure, and pass interferences. Like the previous poster said, these high school officials are working these games as a side-gig. This definitely is not a full-time job. Refereeing is not easy because on almost every play there is something going on that probably is a penalty but you cant call a penalty on every play.

Fun fact:

When DLS played Trinity in Texas several years ago, the refs called "12 men in the huddle" on them a couple of times (Texas goes by NCAA rules, not NFHS) because they'd have one player run off the field out of the huddle on most plays.

The problem is that the DLS WRs never go to the huddle. If there were two wideouts, then there were only 10 players in the huddle.

When this was pointed out to the ref, did it stop them? Yes and no. They did stop calling "12 men in the huddle". Instead, they changed it to "Too many men in the huddle".

🤷‍♂️

The illegal substitution foul is mainly called when the defense has 12 0r more players on the field with no one attempting to get off prior to the snap. It helps prevent the illegal participation foul ( a 15 yarder) which would occur after the snap.

Sounds like a case of home field advantage. High stakes game on the road. SJS refs possibly. Come on.. are we that far removed from the days of crooked refs in small towns making calls in favor of the home team? It happens.
