PCAL Week #8

PCAL Week #8

Last week 8-4 Overall 88-26

Gabilan (Palma on Bye)-Palma looks to be in trouble of not making the playoffs. They took a bad loss to Aptos and remain winless in league. PAL Booster has them making the playoffs, but I don’t know. I have them going 1-2 in their last 3 (Hollister, Monterey, Alvarez), they will need to at least 2-1 to have a playoff chance. Not impossible but it will be difficult for this young team to rebound. Salinas was able to hold off a tough Monterey team, if the Cowboys don’t get healthy they will have a tough time beating Soquel. Hollister started well vs Soquel, but faded in the 4th (as Soquel does to most teams) in the 28-10 loss.

Thu 10/17 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm- Thursday night games stink, Soquel may start a little slow, but Alvarez is no match for this years Knights team. Soquel 35-7

Fri 10/18 Salinas (CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm
– Aptos had a huge win vs Palma last week, Salinas played a close one vs Monterey. Salinas seems to be closer to the pack in the Gabilan than the to the top team Soquel. Salinas 27-21

Fri 10/18 Monterey (CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm
-A win by either team almost assures a playoff spot, although I think both are basically in already. With HMB and Carmel forced to be CCS DIII, it could be argued an “easier” path for a CCS title in DII than in DIII. Winner of this game probably goes in DII. Hollister 28-24

Mission North (MVC on a Bye) –
I said it last week and I will say it again: This division is a toss up. Although it looks like NMC has taken a little bit of control with its win over Alisal last week. But the race is far from over as I can’t trust any of these teams. Even Seaside who I thought would go winless, won last week. Big props to Seaside and Coach Avila for persevering through this tough year! St. Francis V Alisal could be a battle for 2nd place and a de-facto playoff berth.

Fri 10/18 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Alisal (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm- Neither one of these teams has a “good” win. Alisal has played a tougher schedule, they will try to out physical the Sharks and their smallish roster. Winner is in the drivers seat for 2nd place, I think. Alisal 24-21

Fri 10/18 Seaside (CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm-
Both Teams are coming off their biggest win of the season (or first in Seaside’s case) last week. NMC’s was probably a bit more meaningful, but they can not afford a letdown vs the Spartans and their dynamic playmaker. NMC 35-14

Sat 10/19 Watsonville (CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 2:00pm
-Scott’s Valley beat Seaside and then lost to MVC. Watsonville beat MVC then lost to Seaside. So, this game should end in a tie? Watsonville 25-24

Mission South (Greenfield Bye)-
PG came so very close to beating North Salinas last week, but they could not stop NS modified offense, Props to NS coaching staff and team for being able to change game plans with out their starting QB. PG football has been improving, but if they want to take that next step, they need to schedule better. Stop playing Marina, Greenfield (even RLS) and schedule some other CCS "B" teams : Sequoia, Terra Nova etc. Their Pre-season does not prepare them for their tough Divisional games. If NS QB is still injured, an improving KC team could provide them with a tough game.

Fri 10/18 Carmel (CA) vs Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA) at Monterey Peninsula College – Carmel has lights now at it’s stadium, not sure why they are renting MPC for some select games? Davis had a better chance of beating Folsom than Rancho does of beating Carmel. Carmel: whatever they want-0

Fri 10/18 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) vs King City (CA) at Salinas Sports Complex 7:30pm
– In this weeks Bizzaro world, KC could win out and make the playoffs. If they can get by an injury depleted North Salinas team then they have Rancho and Soledad to finish. Beating NS is a big IF. North Salinas 24-20

Fri 10/18 Pacific Grove (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm
- PG had a shot last week, I really think some tougher preseason competition will help move this program back to the glory years. Soledad is playing ok football, but PG is the better team this year. PG 28-14

Santa Lucia (Harbor Bye)-
@streakone choosing the RLS v Pajaro game in the pick’em is awesome!!! Should start to see some separation this week as the top 4 teams play each other. Who cares about SRV v DLS or SI v SF? This weekend you have RLS v PV in the Del Monte Forest! Not only that, Saturday night SLV travels to the Salinas Valley to take on a decent Gonzales team. Another Super Saturday in the Santa Lucia!!!

Fri 10/18 Marina (CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 7:30pm- This game intrigues me, because I think Santa Cruz has a chance here. They have not won all year, but they have not been shutout either. Last year 0-6, average score 50-0. This year 0-7 & 45-14, baby steps. Santa Cruz 24-21

Sat 10/19 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) vs Gonzales (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm-
By far the best PCAL story of 2023 is the re-birth of the SLV program. Great to see them be successful again. Tough trip to the Salinas Valley to face a decent Gonzales team, but they should prevail. SLV 21-17

Sat 10/19 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:30pm –
When @Streakone chooses your team for pick’em it feels like ESPN choosing you for college Game Day. Like are Cal 14, Concrete and Norcal sports fan showing up to RLS for pregame festivities? I digress. PV has won 4 games this year, but they have been against really bad teams. RLS is finally at full strength and played a complete game in dominating Santa Cruz last week. This should set up a fantastic title fight in 2 weeks vs SLV. RLS 34-20

Mitty Schedule

Mitty got a transfer from Heritage in Brentwood, I believe. It's Ze-Ni Patterson, a 5-8 sophomore who led the team in scoring at 16.3 ppg and rebounding at 6.7 rpg. Also 3.2 steals.

Heritage was 20-10 against a reasonably tough schedule so Patterson can be expected to contribute.

Their JVs would have won 15 or 20 games against a varsity schedule, and their frosh routinely battled their JVs on even terms in scrimmages.

In short, the cupboard is far from bare.

What is going on with Riordan?

Team chemistry beats raw talent any day of the week unless your mater dei.

Yup everybody cant do what the big 7 can do

Recruiting and transfers every year

Mater dei

Mater dei being the best of those

They are coached well enough or talent so overwhelming they don't need as much team chemistry to win.

All those teams finished top 5 or top 10 in the nation 5+ times the last decade doing this

Most other teams recruit great than develop players and build a team organically.

Serra the last 3 years before this year did that. De la salle always built there team that way

Riordan doesn't value defense. And offense always get stagnant in the second half.

The coaching is not good and u have to coach great when u dont have consistent team chemistry.

Si has mental toughness as well they been down big in games late and came back in all of them but srv

What is going on with Riordan?

I’ve mentioned this before, there are a lot of fake offers on that squad. These fake offers attract kids to the school. Follow the trail and I guarantee you 6-7 at most have an official offer that sticks,. Losing by 3 scores to VC is embarrassing. Kids will figure it out over time and this window to win will close. Defensively there is no coaching occuring. Riordan is an example of the most talented team with the least success.
Over the years there has been a lot of talk about the coach factor vs the talent factor for a successful team. AR shows how important good coaching is to a team's success. AR was highly ranked early this season simply because of the talent factor. Reality, though, shows how important coaching is in ranking equations.

WCAL 2024-25 SEASON

@SFcityfan, let’s get some those girls on the varsity. lol. Good showing vs the Irish today.

Appears Ravipati is building his program through the freshman classes starting with the 2027 kids. Their JVs (48 frosh; 7 sophs) are 2-3. Chris Lawson and Mike Mitchell’s brothers are freshman. Their WCAL losses are by only 6 and 8 points to SI and VC
However, in light of this info, its important to note that AR is not fielding a Frosh team. This quoted roster number could hardly field two teams. And further to the frosh/soph ratio, many of the current sophomores are playing varsity.

What is going on with Riordan?

It’s a mixture of their defense being Swiss cheese and perhaps some of those D1 players are overrated?
HA!…. What else could it Be?….🤣

The Dude that posted the links to all those players was awesome and thank you again so much!!!… they all have legit offers!…. What a Talented team!!.

Obviously the Coach knows how to aquire talent, he just hasn’t figured out how the coach it yet…. 🤣🤣

NCP Pick'em Week 9 Games

I heard,I watched as you posted last week, every time you turned around this Burford kid was in or going into end zone, also I heard you say this gifted young man is also s tremendous wrestler.Yeah,I’ll stay tuned and have the Corral in mind,I need that Tri-Tip Sandwich!😂😂🤣🤣👍👍
I remember you slugbug and I were talking about the talen on Sacramento team.. This kid is thar. He has no off season. He was wrestling all summer. He us ranked #22 nationally. He has Oakdale speed. Combined with Oakdale farm boy strong. It's genetic. His grandfather is from my dad's generation. He was section wrestling champ too I was told. This week CC. We will see on Friday how real he is. CC has big linemen. My buddy and I were checking out his hudle highlights his defense plays show his real speed. Running people down. He will be on defense in college.

It was a bit of the same last season if my memory serves me correct.

For as much criticism as their coaches are getting, their JV staff deserves credit. I cannot imagine it being easy playing up week after week in the WCAL and remaining competitive.

WCAL 2024-25 SEASON

Its a bit of both if we're being honest. There's nothing to suggest that the kids they claim are getting recruited aren't. Many of them are committing and they've sent guys to the next level in both of Ravipati's first two seasons. I think his biggest strength is just that: he's so well connected that he can get guys looks at a rate that other coaches, even in the WCAL, cannot.

Who was recruiting Isiah Chala before Ravipati came knocking? He's at Fresno State now.
Who was recruiting Zach Jones before Ravipati showed up? He's at UC Davis now.
Who was recruiting Joseph Herbert before Ravipati took over? He didn't even play for Coach Adhir but he's at San Jose State now on full scholarship after walking on. Ravipati got him looked at, not anyone else.
Look at their 3 signees from last year: Kalolo Taaga, Tyrone Jackson and Tobey Weydemuller. Taaga was a 1 year footballer player who converted from hoops and signed his NIL to USC, Jackson had zero buzz going into his junior year and probably doesn't go anywhere if he stays at Oakland Tech and Weydemuller didn't play but a handful of varsity games due to injury yet is at Cal.

My point is that.....as you alluded, maybe those guys aren't as great as their recruiting profiles state. Yet they're still getting recruited at an alarming rate! Seems to me like a Head Coach who fights to get his guys out. W Coach.

Building aye? Lol. Its much easier to build off of good foundation than it is off of no foundation.

You do realize that SI was a playoff team in 4 of Regalia's last 5 seasons at the helm, right? The only season they failed to see playoffs was the 2020 COVID Season when there was no playoffs! How many playoff appearances did Riordan have in that same span? You guessed it, GOOSE EGG!!!!!

And, Hell, don't forget to mention that Regalia retired. He isn't coaching anymore. John would still be at SI had he not decided to call em quits. Can't say the same for Mark Modeste, he was Fired.

I'm not trying to undermine what Lenny Vandermade is doing, he's done a good job but to compare the two situations is laughable.

SI Reports 29 Seniors, 28 Juniors, 5 Sophomores and a Freshman on their Varsity Roster.
Riordan Reports 14 Seniors, 22 Juniors, 12 Sophomores and 3 Freshmen on their Varsity Roster.

Mitty Schedule

Does Mitty have any freshmen or transfers (other than Devin Cosgriff) that look interesting for this season? It looks to me that four 2026 class players should start this season along with a 2027-point guard. The Monarchs could use more height because McKenna Woliczko (6-2) is the only front court player that they have returning. They have a couple younger posts coming up hopefully.

What is going on with Riordan?

Thank You So Much!!….

WOW, That is Crazy!!…. So out of roughly 50 players, 17 have D1 offers….

And I thought Folsom was the most talent team in Nor Cal!!…. 🤣
Wow as well!! I had no idea the number of offers some of these kids have. The most on the list looks to be Wesley Winn with 43! And he's only a sophomore.

Anyway problems may be around schemes and play calling. If you have that much talent it's actually difficult to take advantage of all of it. Spread the ball around, getting your best guys in space, running behind your best lineman and/or having that best lineman pass block for you. Also you can have a bunch of D1 skilled guys in your defensive backfield but that doesn't help in run protection.

Varsity boys , jv or Freshmen looking for a game

Ha Kidman, I see the value bring to this site. Only reason you deserve a reply. Trying to do a favor, advertising high schools and or coaches names does not seem favorable to those you’re trying to help. Keep doing what you do, you provide a lot of good entertainment/info. It is fun during the season to follow you. If your cougars are D3 they could do some good in NCS this year. Expect them to be in D2 seeded number 8th. Mahalo
