NO RESPECT for the Rams of Stockton … STILL! 😂

MaxPreps rankings in for SJS D2 updated today ranks St. Mary’s behind both Manteca and Del Oro. Del Oro leaped frog St. Mary’s “today” it seems on the basis that they are playing Folsom tonight, even without Del Oro even taking the field yet

Yet, CalPreps has St. Mary’s ranked above both of these teams in their poll:

Outside of tonight’s games, Del Oro’s (12.5) and Manteca’s (7.1) SOS is below St. Mary’s (14.2).

Go figure!

BTW. We don’t really care! We do our talking on the field, just as we did last week vs DLS. No worries.

Possible Treatment for CTE please share

An interview Joe Namath did with Howard Stern talking about a treatment he used to help his brain. He suffered 5 concussions in his career, started this treatment about 30 something years after he retired. Since high school football participation in the bay area is declining, I hope this can be shared with high school coaches, athletic directors, admins, players and their families in hopes that it will lower their fears about CTE. The treatment is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy which he did a total of 120 sessions, and he took a SPECT scan of his brain. I just want high school football to survive and thrive, especially for those struggling programs. Login to view embedded media

CCS Play-off look halfway through season

As CCS teams have hit the halfway mark in the regular season the play-off picture begins to take shape. This year the CCS has reduced the number of at-large berths from seven to five as the Mt. Hamilton League was awarded two more automatic play-off spots in taking in Christopher and Gilroy and going from 24 teams to 26 and adding an additional B league. The projections are based on the team with higher Calpreps points winning in head-to-head match-ups for the remaining unplayed games.

Division I

8. Sacred Heart Cathedral 6-4 66 vs 1. Serra 10-0 85
5. Sacred Heart Prep 9-1 72.5 vs 4. Wilcox 10-0 73
6. St Francis 6-4 70.5 vs 3. Salinas 10-0 75.5
7. Los Gatos 7-3 67 vs 2. Mitty 9-1 75.5

It is highly likely that seven spots will go to the top three WCAL teams (Currently projected to be Serra, Mitty and St. Francis), The top two teams in the Deanza (Wilcox and Los Gatos) and the Gabilan (Salinas) and PAL-Bay champions (Sacred Heart Prep). The final team will be a close race between the PAL-Bay runner -up (Half Moon Bay), and Gabilan (either Palma or Aptos) runner-up or the fourth place WCAL team (Sacred Heart Cathedral).

Division 2 – Will likely consist of the remaining 2-3 WCAL teams, 2-3 Gabilan, 2 PAL Bay teams the winner of the Mt. Hamilton league, and possibly the third place Deanza team.

8. Hollister 5-5 52.5 vs 1. Half Moon Bay 9-1 64
5. Bellarmine 4-6 56.5 vs 4. Aptos 7-3 57.5
6 Christopher 10-0 55 vs 3. Menlo Atherton 5-5 61
7. Riordan 4-6 54 vs 2. Palma 8-2 64

Division 3

8. Kings Academy 8-2 41 vs 1. Mountain View 5-5 52
5. Burlingame 4-6 43 vs 4. Soquel 9-1 47
6. Aragon 4-6 41.5 vs 3. Menlo School 5-5 47.5
7. Santa Teresa 6-4 41.5 vs 2. Lincoln 9.1 48.5

Division 4

8. Monterey 7-3 31 vs 1. Westmont 10-0 41
5. Sequoia 9-1 37 vs 4. Homestead 4-6 38
6. St. Francis (W) 10-0 34.5 vs 3. Pioneer 9-1 38.5
7. Hillsdale 703 33.5 vs 2. Live Oak 6-4 39.5

Division 5

8. Woodside 7-3 20 vs 1. Seaside 6-4 30
5. Capuchino 7-3 26.5 vs 4. Overfelt 8-2 27.5
6. Greenfield 7-3 20.5 vs 3. Branham 8-2 28
7. Willow Glen 8-2 20.5 vs 2. Rancho San Juan 9-1 29.5

A leagues 4 automatic spots

WCAL – Serra will be a 30 point plus favorite in its remaining five games and should coast to a WCAL championship and the top seed in the CCS play-offs. Six teams from the WCAL will make the play-offs. With the awarding off all the bonus points to WCAL teams it is almost a mathematical certainty that the fifth and sixth place teams will take two of the five section at-large berths. The race for second through sixth should be highly competitive. Currently Mitty, St. Francis and Sacred Heart Cathedral are projected to get the other three automatic berths with Bellarmine and Riordan getting the two at-large play-off spots. Saint Ignatius and Valley Christian are the only 0-2 teams after two weeks of league play.

DeAnza – Wilcox had an impressive pre-season schedule going 4-0 with a couple of notable wins. The rest the league went 6-14 and just 2-9 against other CCS A teams. The title will be decided on October 21st when Wilcox travels to Los Gatos. Both of these teams should make the D1 play-offs. Mountain View and Homestead are projected for the final two automatic spots Homestead had a big 14-10 win over Palo Alto this week. The fifth place finisher between Palo Alto and Milpitas will have an outside shot for an at-large berth.

PAL-Bay- Half Moon Bay handed Menlo-Atherton their first league since 2017 in a 22-21 win. Sacred Heart Prep is favored to win the PAL-Bay Championship in a three way race with Half Moon Bay and Menlo-Atherton. The PAL- Bay winner will likely be in the D1 play-offs with the second place team being on the bubble for being the 8th team. Menlo School is a slight favorite to grab the last automatic spot over Aragon and Burlingame. In other league action, Burlingame beat Aragon 14-10 on a 29 yard TD pass with 8 seconds left. The 5th place finisher in the Bay is highly likely to get an at-large spot with the last place team being in contention for the final at-large berth.

Gabilan – Salinas looks like a strong favorite to win the league with Palma and Aptos fighting it out for second place. The second place finisher will be on the bubble for reaching the D1 play-offs. While Hollister does not look as strong as in prior years they should get the last automatic spot. There is a big drop between the top four teams and the bottom three. It is unlikely that the fifth place team from this league will get an at-large spot given their poor non-league records.

Mt. Hamilton - A very competitive race between the top four teams (Christopher, Live Oak, Lincoln and Santa Teresa). All four should get the automatic berths. The two teams currently ranked the highest, Christopher and Lincoln are both undefeated and play next week. Leland will have a chance for an at-large berth as a fifth place finisher. Oak Grove seems to be the weakest team in the league and destined for 6th place. This league really struggled in non-league play going 2-5 against other CCS A teams and mainly playing B and C teams in pre-season. The top team from this league will likely only be a bottom seed in D2 or a high seed in D3 for the play-offs.

B Leagues – Two Automatic Spots except for Mission 3 and Cypress 1

El Camino – Kings Academy looks like the favorite with Sequoia currently projected to get the second automatic spot. Sequoia held off a spirited challenge from Los Altos. With the score tied at 14 and under two minutes to play Sequoia forced a fumble on the one yard line and after punting – won the game on a 60 yard pick six with just seconds to go in the game. Santa Clara will likely challenge Sequoia for the second spot.

Ocean – It should be a tight four team race between Capuchino, Carlmont, Terra Nova and Hillsdale for the two automatic spots. On the first night of league play Capuchino nipped Carlmont 27-25 while Terra Nova beat Hillsdale 27-14. The third place team will be on the bubble for an at-large berth. Terra Nova is a slight favorite over Capuchino at this point for the league championship.

Mission – Soquel is the current favorite, but Monterey will have a good chance for the league championship as well. This league gets three automatic berths and Seaside will be favored to hold off Scotts Valley for the third spot.

Cypress – Only one automatic bid here in what should be a very competitive race between St. Francis of Watsonville (5-0), Rancho San Juan (5-0) and Soledad (5-1). The second place finisher has a very good chance at an at-large bid due to their strong pre-league record.

Foothill – One of the two new Blossom Valley B leagues. Currently Pioneer and Branham are projected to be the two qualifiers from this league although Gilroy should pose a strong challenge for a play-off spot.

Valley – Westmont (5-0) and Overfelt (4-1) are projected to make the play-offs. Leigh is off to an 0-5 start but played a much harder schedule and could challenge for a play-off spot.

C Leagues – One spot

PAL Lake – Very competitive race between Woodside and El Camino with Woodside being a slight favorite.

Santa Lucia – Another race that figures to be competitive between Greenfield and Stevenson.

West Valley – This league should come down to a week 10 showdown between Willow Glenn and Del Mar with Willow Glen currently being a slight favorite to prevail. Mt. Pleasant is also in the mix.

Del Oro gets DESTROYED on the 100th anniversay of Folsom/Homecoming Night

What a night! Jam packed crowd, weather was amazing. It was the 100th anniversay of Folsom HS and homecoming night. There was a homecoming parade down Sutter St in the Histoic Dictrict this week. Fun night to be a Bulldog!

Del Oro came in undefeated with a ton of swagger. They nearly predicted a win on a local cable news interview. @RidgeRider stayed in the shadows all week, hoping for an explosion this morning. It will never happen.

Austin Mack was once part of the Del Oro program. He was told he wasn't good enough and would never start there. Look at him now. The ultimate middle finger! Love those stories.

Del Oro's HIGHLY touted offense struggled to move the ball all night and NEARLY put up a goose egg on the scoreboard. They got lucky on a Folsom turn over and were gifted decent field position and got lucky with one pass. Other than that, they were SMOKED on the lines all night. They simply couldn't match up with the Folsom athletes on either side of the ball. Rico Flores put on another show for the Del Oro faithful.

So far, @larry legend33 has predicted that Oak Ridge and Del Oro were the real deal. They have both been beaten by a combined score of 76-20. There should never be a doubt that Folsom STILL owns the Sierra Foothill League. Granite Bay and Rocklin are the next sacraificial lambs.

Irish...

Beat SI 10-0.
Irish lead 10-0 at the half. Irish scored on a safety, nailing the SI QB in the end zone.
Jerry Mixon scored a touchdown and a 2-pointer to make it 10-0.
Irish threw an INT in the end zone with :36 left in the half from the SI 6. All they had to do was give the man the ball and he's in. SI ran out the clock at when they got the ball back.
SHC QB threw a second INT in the end zone, then fumbled another in the other end zone with only 3 minutes left in the game.
Fortunately, SI couldn't move the ball at all and threw an INT of their own with 1:42 left and the IRISH went into victory formation.
Defense played great.

Week 9: Acalanes (6-0) at Campolindo (6-0)

1. Acalanes wide receiver Trevor Rogers (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) is a junior receiver to watch and has 638 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Five of the 10 scores came in the Dons' two toughest games (San Marin and Sheldon).

2. Campolindo has its own standout wide receiver in senior Robbie Mascheroni, who has 728 yards and nine touchdowns. He has scored at least one touchdown in each game and posted a season high eight catches and 175 yards against Monte Vista.

3. Campolindo is 11-1 in league play since a 2019 loss to Acalanes. Despite Campolindo's sustained success, this has been a pretty even series with Campolindo having a 3-2 advantage over the past five years.

Frank Moro: A true teacher/coach

It's probably an unrealistic and improbable 2022 honor at this point but is there a better candidate for Central Coast Section Coach of the Year than South San Francisco High School's Frank Moro? This guy, a longtime public school teacher/coach, has produced a rather stunning turnaround at SSF. There was no varsity football program there in 2021. A parade of inadequate walk-on coaches, combined with demographic changes within the student body, administrative indifference, a pandemic and other negative factors, had gutted the program dramatically. Moro, a former head coach there (and still on the faculty), agreed to return to the sidelines and to attempt a resurrection. He inherited a 24-game losing streak and a small, inexperienced roster. The Warriors lost their first two games this fall and have now won three of their last four. Yes, those wins have occurred against fragile programs within the expanded PAL. But previous coaches were unable to pull off victories against similar minimal opposition. Moro has. He has kept the program alive. Coach of the Year nominees typically hail from heavyweight programs. SSF is not in that category (it was at one time, though, way back when). Moro's work is not going to get headlines. The Warriors compete within the PAL's new, expanded eight-team Lake Division, a C league which was created to preserve failing programs from the PAL and the neighboring SCVAL. Moro has shown how successful that move can be. No, SSF will not be scheduling Los Gatos, Salinas or Serra anytime soon, if ever. But at least the program has survived. Credit Moro for that.

Monterey Trail Needs a Game

Due to a cancellation, Monterey Trail is in need of a game. They can play Friday October 7th, Saturday October 8th, or Friday October 14th.

Anybody, anywhere.

Freedom in Oakley, Inderkum, and Roseville all have openings, but no word yet on whether they will play.

Anyone know of another team with a hole in their schedule? Anywhere from Fresno to Reno, from the Bay Area to the mountains.

Fight at Whitney HS after game vs Folsom

What the heck! KCRA 3 is reporting there was a fight between parents after the Folsom game at Whitney HS in the parking lot and gun spotted but no shots fired. KCRA 3 sharing both parents are with Folsom HS. Again no shots fired per Rocklin police, but the incident caused concerns for students and parents.

@pastyfastquick3, do I need to fear for my life if St. Mary’s plays Folsom in Folsom? I’ll try not to make any Folsom parents mad. Promise! I thought they only bring guns to games in Stockton. DANG!!!

Just glad no one seriously got hurt. Stay safe!

PCAL Week 8

PCAL Week 8

Well, you know when @Streakone includes 2 PCAL games in his Pick’ems it’s going to be a good week! Truth is he didn’t include potentially the best match up: ST Francis vs Rancho San Juan. This week is going to be great.

This past week was not bad. Palma was able to score the winning touchdown in the last 20 seconds to knock off long time rival Hollister. With the win Palma controls its own destiny for the Gabilan Crown. Unfortunately, 2 of their last 3 games are vs Salinas and Aptos. I don’t see them as favorites in either. Alisal won the “looks like we stay another year in the Gabilan” game with Santa Cruz, while Aptos handled business with Alverez, setting up a great showdown with Salinas. The schedule was kind to Salinas for this game, the extra week due to the bye, gave Salinas more time to prepare for the Aptos Wing T. With their explosive offense, good defense and great in game adjustments I am high on Salinas wining this game.

In the Mission, North Salinas scored almost as many points than they had all year, 24, but it was not enough as MVC was able to score 34. Soquel continued to flex its muscle with a good road win over a much-improved Seaside squad. Monterey had the best victory of the weekend by coming back to beat Scott’s Valley. Monterey was down 14-6, woke up at halftime and won 18-14. Last years Monterey team loses that game. This sets up a great match up for first place with Soquel this weekend. I am on the fence, Soquel is so well coached and disciplined, but Monterey has so much speed and a really underrated defense.

The Cypress saw one of it unbeatens fall, as Soledad was able to knock off Rancho San Juan. That leaves St. Francis as the last unbeaten team in the division. Rancho will look to return the favor this weekend vs St Francis. Meanwhile Soledad hopes to stay unbeaten in the division as they take on PG. According to PAL Boosters predictions, this division could send 2 teams to the playoffs, 1 AQ and 1 at large.

The Santa Lucia is shaping up to be a 2-team race between Greenfield and RLS. However, Marina can make some noise as it plays Greenfield this weekend. A win by the Mariners can turn it back into a 3-team race.

Last week 11-1 (I could of gone 12-0, just refused to pick PG) Overall 78-32

Gabilan

Fri 10/14 Salinas (CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm- Salinas scores 45 pts per game and gives up 19.1, Aptos scores 44 and gives up 19.6. These teams are evenly matched. Salinas has done it vs a little tougher schedule plus all the stuff I said above. Salinas 34-28

Fri 10/14 Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm- Hollister needs to be careful not to have let down after last weeks emotional loss to Palma. Alisal is the type of ground and pound team that could take advantage of that. Hollister 24-14

Fri 10/14 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 7:30pm – These 2 struggling teams are probably happy to see each other. Alvarez 24-23

Mission

Fri 10/14 Seaside (CA) vs North Salinas (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm – North Salinas finally showed some life on offense last week, but not enough. Meanwhile Seaside fell to first place Soquel. Seaside will bounce back this week. Seaside 28-6

Fri 10/14 Carmel (CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 7:30pm- I want to pick Carmel in this game, I do. Their defense is good enough to stop Scott’s Valley, I just have zero faith in the Padres offense. They have been way to inconsistent offensively to pick them here. Scott’s Valley 17-7

Sat 10/15 Monterey (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm- Soquel is going to try to do what they do best, grind out the game. Go on long scoring drives and keep Monterey’s offense on the sideline. That has worked most of the year except vs Palma. A team with a very good defense. Monterey has a very good defense. Monterey’s program turns the corner here. Upset. Monterey 16-14

Cypress

Thu 10/13 Pacific Grove (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm -Stupid PG blew my chance at a perfect week by blowing out NMC. Soledad is riding a 6 game win streak behind a great defense. Soledad 17-6

Fri 10/14 King City (CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm – King City recovered from a heartbreaking loss to Rancho, with an easy victory over Watsonville. NMC was embarrassed by PG. King City 35-14

Sat 10/15 Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA) at St. Francis (Watsonville, CA), 2:00pm – Rancho is playing the best 2 defenses back to back. They will need have a better passing (2-7 for 7 yds and 1 int) game this week if they want to keep the Sharks at bay. (Yes, St Francis mascot is the Shark 😊). St. Francis hopes to keep rolling to a match up with Soledad in 2 weeks. St Francis 21-7

Santa Lucia

Fri 10/14 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm – It has been a very long year for SLV, now they will have a very long bus ride home. Gonzales 35-7

Fri 10/14 Marina (CA) at Greenfield (CA), 7:30pm- This week every division has at least 1 must see game. If Marina once to wreak havoc in the division it must beat Greenfield this week. Marina is vastly improved over previous years, but Greenfield is playing well also. Taking the home team. Greenfield 24-23

Sat 10/15 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:00pm –
RLS had the chance to play Monterey Trail this past weekend. Then I think RLS realized that it was Monterey Trail and decided to just take a 3rd bye week. I believe it was a wise decision. RLS 45-14

SHC @ St. Francis

Each team with 1 possession. Lancers with two near miss catches that wouldve went for a breakaway TD. Irish with some good news with Isaiah Keishk returning to the lineup already making an impact with a 20+ yard catch over the middle. RL Miller with a tough in traffic catch for Irish TD. SH 7, SF 0 mid 1st.
