Every HS program owes DLS thanks

DLS has set the standard for the last 25 years. They have taken the standard of prep football and jumped it up several notches. This has nothing to do with talent and recruiting and everything to do with upping the expectations, personal and team. What they have achieved is incredible and what they have done is give other programs something to shoot for. Programs that want to compete with them have changed the way they look at things and have been pushed to another level to compete with the best.

Programs like Folsom, seeking to be the best have upped their game to be special. Locally, Cal Hi is a great example of taking their program to new heights. Instead of castigating them, programs should thank them.

SHP's Burr-Kirven named top player in state for small schools

Sacred Heart Prep senior Ben Burr-Kirven got his 2014 football season off to a slow start when he missed the first five games of the season due to injury. The final eight games, however, were quite remarkable.

Those final eight games saw the University of Washington-bound Burr-Kirven rush for 862 yards and 18 touchdowns on 106 carries as he averaged more than 100 rushing yards per game. He also caught a touchdown pass.

On defense, Burr-Kirven averaged more than 11 tackles per game while finishing with 116 stops, two sacks and two interceptions while helping the Gators wrap up a historic 13-0 season by winning the Central Coast Section Open Division championship for the first time in program history.

For those efforts, Burr-Kirven was named the state player of the year in the Small Schools Division by Cal-Hi Sports. He also was a finalist for Cal-Hi's Mr. Football State Player of the Year, which went to future Washington teammate Jake Browning of Folsom.

Burr-Kirven is the first State Small Schools Player of the Year from Sacred Heart Prep, but SHP rival Menlo School has had several -- including Jim Noriega for 1990, Jim McKinley for 1988 and John Paye three straight years for 1980 to 1982...and he was also a first team All-American on the MaxPreps Small School Division team.

Final Pwood 58 ESCP 48

Merc...

The inside-outside combination of freshman Stella Kailahi and
senior Marissa Hing combined for 47 points to help Pinewood beat West
Bay Athletic League rival Eastside Prep 58-48 on Friday in a showdown
between two of the top girls basketball teams in the area.
What
made that inside-outside combination all the more noteworthy is due to
Pinewood usually being all outside. The emergence of Kailahi provides a
whole different dynamic.
"Now we have another option,'' Pinewood
coach Doc Scheppler said. "We never had a post to feed before. I'm going
to have to come up with some new sets for her.''
Hing, an
all-Mercury News first-team selection as a junior when she helped lead
Pinewood to its sixth state championship, bombed in five 3-pointers.
"My shot had really been off lately,'' Hing said.
Nice time to break out.
"She loves playing in big games,'' Scheppler said. "When the bright lights are on she goes to work.''
Pinewood
(8-2, 2-0), the Mercury News' No. 3-ranked team, led 16-6 after one
quarter and was never seriously threatened. No. 4 Eastside (11-3, 1-1)
cut an 11-point halftime deficit to four at 36-32, but that was as close
as it got. Pinewood went on an 11-2 run to extend its lead to 47-34
before Eastside rallied again to draw to within 50-45 early in the
fourth quarter.
"One thing you know about Eastside,'' Scheppler said. "They'll come after you.''
But then Kailahi, who finished with 24 points, scored the next seven to make it a 12-point Pinewood lead.

"I was lucky enough to get some easy baskets,'' Kailahi said.
Freshman point guard Kayla Tahaafe led Eastside with 17 points. Chacitty Cunningham had 14.

Trying to make a list of active overseas pros from NorCal high schools

I have tracked players overseas for a while for my college and other writing. I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of players from NorCal high schools currently playing outside this country. I started a bit of a list, but I have not really followed high school sports in a while, so I am sure I am missing a lot of people and never really paid attention to high schools outside of the Bay Area. If there is anyone that you know or think is still playing, you do not need to figure out where, just give me a name and high school and college and I will try to track it down.

Here is what I have so far:

DLS' Most Amazing Record of ALL

Every team has only one EOY game every season. Whether they win em all or lose all. Or any combo thereof. Some teams could go 1-9, 2-8, but win their final game, and not make playoffs.

Starting in 1982, DLS has been in playoffs EVERY year. Thats 33 consecutive years. The amazing stat is that they have won 26 of those 33 games! Thats a .820 winning average.

26 - 7 in EOY games! Chomp on that for a bit, Mr G61.

WCAL needs to be relevant

I've given fans a of the WCAL a bad time about their football teams. The fact is that they are the best all-sports league in Northern California. Part of the criticism is tongue in cheek but most of it is true. I've always been of the belief that in order to be the best possible, your top teams need to be great. Baseball was at its best when the Yankees dominated. The Lakers in hoops and the 49ers, Cowboys, Steelers, and Raiders in their heyday for the NFL.

Northern California football is best when the WCAL has some dominant teams. That hasn't been the case at the NorCal regional or state level for awhile. The athletes are there but I truly believe they need to evolve. They have always been able to out-athlete teams in their area and relied on defense and a run-control game. That works until you come up against a team of similar athletic ability and they put 8-9 guys in the box.

Do they need to change? How do they to change? If you don't think need to change, why do you believe that?
