Don Collins who has been at the head of the San Francisco Section AAA for many years will oversee his final Turkey Day this year at Kezar. Don has done a lot for the AAA during his tenure including adding girls flag football to the realm of sports offered by the Section. He was an athletes commissioner advocating for students to apply for scholarships. He will be missed and his replacement will have huge shoes to fill

Eh…San Francisco needs some new blood in their section. Have you been to a AAA football game? You’d swear it’s 1988. The entire league just reeks of old and corroded. I don’t think there is a crappier league in the state.

prior to Collins taking over a AAA football game outside of Turkey bowl would be lucky if there were even ten fans in the stands. Football all around except big games like Bruce Mahoney, Dela Salle or being the only ticket in small farm towns, attendance is WAY DOWN and not what it was in the 60s 70s and 80s

Give the guy a break. Demographics, Cost of living and private schools are more of the rationale for the decline. This can be said for the CCS as well. The situation is simply not going to improve.

There is some truth in that. In a bygone era, student rooting sections were large and loud. Just watched an ancient film (via Youtube) of a 1968 Serra vs. SI football game and the SI side of the field (San Mateo HS on a Saturday afternoon) was packed with white-shirted teens fully engaged in the high-scoring affair played out in front of them. The crowd that day was probably in the 4,000-5,000 range. Not unusual at that time.

The crowd for those two teams is still immense.

A significant chunk of parents of the BVAL schools in the outer East Bay (Pitt-Ant-Brentwood) are from the City or Daly City. Case in point Najee, Mixon, ect… The Sac area is another direct benefit as well. WCAL is doing great but CCS public’s are generally not built for football for various reasons. The Bay Area is seeing significant enrollment decline, even cheap/mid-low income Hayward in the east bay is closing schools! The North Bay lost a high school last year (El Molino) and the CCS areas has lost a few, it’s just not a great place to raise a family anymore unless you have one kid or plenty of money. Also one child per couple still equals enrollment decline. Large families, even 3 children, are becoming very rare.
