No. 32 Aptos (2-0) and No. 31 Campolindo (1-1) came into Friday’s game as close as two teams can be. The on-field action was not nearly as close as Aptos used a precise running game and a slew of turnovers in a 49-0 shutout win.

Campolindo tossed six interceptions and had two fumbles. Their first two turnovers gave Aptos the ball in Cougars’ territory and the Mariners turned it into a 14-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter behind touchdowns from sophomore Lawrence Ingram.

Aptos got a third touchdown from Ingram and additional rushing scores from junior Dante Aranda and junior Caden Prichard en route to a 35-0 halftime lead. The final two scores came in the final minute of the first half to put the game out of reach.

The Mariners played a complete game on Friday in unleashing its stable of runners, who were able to use their speed to turn the corner. Senior quarterback Nick Forbes is the ringleader of the attack with ball fakes, a tough running style and giving Aptos a passing threat. Defensively, Aptos rallied to the ball well and was a sure tackling group. Senior Dante Martin made numerous plays.

Aptos has won its first two games by identical 49-0 scores. It opens league play next week when it hosts No. 22 Palma (2-0). The Mariners have been a consistent winner in the Central Coast Section and this year could be their best team under head coach Randy Blankenship.

Campolindo found some success on intermediate to deep passes with junior quarterback Dashiell Weaver. After turning it over on its first three possessions, the Cougars took their fourth drive into the red zone before turning it over on downs.

The Cougars need to rebound quickly with a game at No. 26 Liberty (1-1) at the Honor Bowl. Liberty is coming off a 38-17 loss to No. 12 Los Gatos (2-0). On September 17, Campolindo will host San Leandro, which will move into the NCP Top 35 next week.

Campolindo has been one of the region’s top winners over the past decade plus, but is working in numerous new starters in the fall.
