Clayton Valley Charter beat Cardinal Newman 28-0. Ray Jackson had 186 yards and a touchdown.

No surprise here. I think most of us thought it would be like 3-4 TD's without Brookshire. With him it would have been a more competitive game at least going into the 4th qtr. But its really not a bad loss. Newman will start popping off victories until the NBL champ with Rancho.

Rancho Cotati looks the part. Big game next week. They go in undefeated to play a very good undefeated Antioch team who has the most insane player around year in Najee Harris.

hi G61....
I have not had internet access for the last week, so I haven't been able to give my 2 cents worth on CN in D4 discussion. If you remember back a few weeks I was the one who told everybody CN was going D4 and no one believed me. (BTW watch for Marin Catholics D4 announcement next.) The ONLY reason CN has been playing up is because D4 did not have a state championship game. Now there is one and hence CN is now back to D4. Where they should be. Back 7, 8 yrs. ago CN had 45-50 players on the varsity and a full JV squad. Now they are carrying 30 players on varsity and only 19 on JV. For a single game or 2 they can compete with the big boys and every once in awhile maybe beat one. But on a weekly basis if they had to do that, they'd never make it through a season, just not enough depth...too many players going both ways and not skilled 2 deep in a lot of positions. The person who wrote on the other thread that they would rather be 6-4 playing tough schedule than 10-0 playing the Ft Braggs of the world was mistaken....what I mean is that CN is still in the NBL and STILL will be playing their tough preseason schedule. Nothing changes for CN EXCEPT when they get to sections. And G61 you are correct the 1st and 2nd rd matchups will be blowouts most likely for CN...but the 3rd round on is big boy ball and they will have to play their best to win those games. JUST LIKE IT IS IN D4 IN BASKETBALL. Why no complaints when Salesian or SMB wins by 50 in their D4 1st/2nd round basketball games (boys and girls)?. The northern schools in basketball face the same daunting journey there. CN enrollment is down...CN football participation is down. Its the right move for CN.

Yeah when CN plays Piedmont, San Marin , JS, SMV in the D4 finals it's going to so exciting.

by the way I was at the CVC/CN game.....the game was MUCH closer then the score shows....if Brookshire had played CN may have won the game. At worst it would have come down to a last possession type game, like the SMS game. CN defense only gave up 21 points and got numerous stops on CVC. It was a 0-0 tie with 2:29 left in the 1st half and CVC had the ball at CN 30. BY 1:11 left if was 14-0....a couple of colossal blunders by CN and the game had completely changed. CN very easily could have had the lead at halftime and instead was down by 14. To be fair I'd say probably should have been 7-7 at half. I thought CN O line did a very good job pass blocking, but the backup QB couldn't make a play despite having 5 or 6 seconds to pass on almost every play. CVC ultimately grinded it out vs CN...ground and pound, throwing only 4 or 5 passes in the game and all on 3/4th down and VERY long situations. CVC had about 78 players for the game CN had 30..... eventually the lack of any offense for CN sustaining drives caught up with the feisty CN defense and they just got worn down.....which goes back to my argument on why they shouldn't be playing up...don't have the depth/numbers to play at that level every week. Bye week for CN next week, Brookshire will be back for the 1st game of league. AND making his 2015 debut will be NBL 1st team All League WR Conor Rubattino who originally was only going to play basketball(NBL MVP) but reconsidered after watching the SMS game and didn't have enough practice time in to be eligible for CVC....So CN will be truly be at full strength for the 1st time vs Santa Rosa in their NBL league opener.

Salesian, SMB, MARIN CATHOLIC, Justin-Siena...all D4
and YES MC will be D4...if not this year, they will be next year.

Yeah that's not that exciting......MC throttled SI who played Campo tough till the end last week, I think MC stays up D3 I really hope

Guru, why the sharp drop in enrollment at Newman? From what I hear, most schools in the area are experiencing sharp drops in enrollment as well.

What gives out there!?

My comment about dropping to D4 was an emotional knee-jerk comment. After reading other posts, and talking to some people at the CVC game I realized CN is doing the right thing for the program. I apologize for speaking on behalf of all CN fans. My comments were only my own. I was proud of the CN defense. They actually gave up less points than Folsom did. It's still a bummer Brookshire couldn't play in that game. Glad Rubattino is back, giving Brookshire him and Wallace as targets. Should be fun to watch.

Paul Cronin rarely makes poor decisions. I'm glad guru made that clarification. This is starting to make more sense now. BTW, nice to have you back guru. Say hi to my newman peeps.
As for enrollment I think on the football side this could be a trend certain geographic areas start to see. With the exception of some of the bigger programs like CVC, Folsom, Grant, DO, OR, etc isn't it safe to say that most of the D2-D4 schools are down? Lets face it the news we hear day in and day out isn't good about football. (concussions). The funny thing is its probably more dangerous to go snowboarding.

Don't every mention CN and Folsom in the same breath ever again. We are on a whole other level brother. In many different ways.

You got spanked. Move on. Have fun in D4. The infamous CN parents will finally get "their title!"

There's public schools in the SJS (Folsom, Granite Bay, etc...) that are way more "well off" than private school CN. In fact, we play on blue synthetic "smurf turf" which is located in a stadium where we regularly get 6-8 thousand fans a night. I saw a stream a while back from Newman and it looked like a 1980s football field from the movie All The Right Moves with Tom Cruise lol

The Folsom football field alone is worth more than the entire CN campus of 1970s buildings and 1980s portables.

And.....our sh*t is free:)

This is true. Nevertheless, Folsom Defense gave up 4 TD's to CVC, and CN defense gave up 3. Just sayin...:)

Small consolation for the fact that you got shut out!

Just sayinnnnn;);)

G61 -

You are from Sonoma County and are happy to be gone, right? Did you become a front runner when Browning was at Folsom?

Huh? Not from Sonoma County lol

But I have a "few friends" there

:)

I'm having a hard time following you. You say that they would never make it through a season, yet that's exactly what they are doing now and will continue to do. They play D1 teams before league, and then a full season of NBL league games, most of which are against D1 and D2 teams. If what you say is true they should leave the NBL and spend their Fridays playing Middletown, Fort Bragg, and St. Helena. BTW last I heard CN's enrollment numbers had stabilized.

G61....

There are many theories on the reasons.

1 theory that I like is the fact that CN has a new president who has
raised the tuition to 14,700$/year. I firmly believe that $$$ is scaring people away.
And despite the widespread belief that CN gives "scholarships"...they don't.
Financial aid is available, but there is paperwork and I have seen on several occasions families being scared off from the process. Coaches/teachers/parents that I have talked to at CN have expressed a desire for some kind of "sliding scale" possibly for the less affluent families, but as of today no such scale exists.
The new president is from out of the area with no local roots and I don't think she understands the connection with sports that CN has. There might be 100 kids at CN without sports.

But that's just my personal theory...and I'm sure there is more to it than that.

I wasn't aware it had gotten that expensive. Last I heard it was around 12k. Wow!

Great info guru!

Also a lot of competition for those students today. I know its more expensive but Sonoma Academy wasn't around when I was in the North Bay. Haven't really dug into the aging issue but I would have to estimate that Santa Rosa in general is not getting any younger and fewer families are moving there. HP and Agilent were big employers when I was growing up there. A lot of jobs moved down 101 toward the city or out of the area. The wine industry still employes a lot but those are low paying jobs.

Maria Carillo is the best public school in Santa Rosa today. Academically it competes with all the good public schools from around the state. If you are girl and excel in soccer this is where you are going. They are #1 ranked in the nation and haven't lost in years around Sonoma County. They do well in baseball too. Basically this is a good option if academics and $ are issues. Not so much on the football and hoops front.

Newman has a great sports history and continues to do well overall. CVC is an animal and Newman needed brookshire and a few lucky breaks to keep it close. That didn't happen but if Newman stays healthy they will be in position to battle a good RC team for the title.

Folsom stadium is really a great place to watch a game. But that blue turf is absolutely horrible looking (same as Boise's).

As far as Newman, I know the numbers at St. Eugenes were way down and there had been a mass exodus of families. This had a lot to do with the new SR Bishop who is still living in the Stone Age.

However a couple of local coaches have said this years Newmans freshman class is absolutely loaded. I know the best hoop and baseball players from RV middle school from last year are all at Newman. I was actually surprised at the number of kids/families I know who have kids in the freshman class, so three might be some turn around?

Newman JV Football team is 3-0. They blasted CVC.
Folsom facilities are off the hook. But I think the best venue might be DO. That place is a madhouse and its cool looking down in that bowl.

Cardinal Newman's freshman class is absolutely loaded. Its the 3rd straight year that CN has had a good freshman athletic class. Those coaches who said that are right on the money. One in particular is leading the way..... As far as I know for the 1st time in CN history a 14 yr. old freshman has made the varsity football team from the start of the season. And to top that off he is STARTING at DE/OLB.
His name is Dino Kahaulelio (I'm sure I butchered that last name)...he's a Hawaiian kid who goes about 5'11 and 220. He's a kid to definitely keep an eye on over the next 4 yrs.

Guru- Quantity down and quality is up huh? That is crazy to have a frosh play football but that size is def varsity material and many hawaiian kids excel at this game because of there stature and grit. Ideally Newman/Ursuline combined should be 700+.

If you live in the North Bay get your butt up to that Rancho game and root them on against Antioch. Probably the game of the week with 2 top 20 teams taking place. You have the chance to see a kid who could play in the league one day at this pace. (Najee Harris)

Larry, I love DO's venue. Super cool.

We are very lucky to live in an area with such nice football stadiums at the high school level.

Friday night Campolindo takes on Napa High at Memorial Stadium. Memorial Stadium is an extremely impressive venue as well.

Agree G61. When I moved up to the eastern 50 corridor Folsom/EDH I was just amazed at the quality of football in the SJS and how big it is. Great fields, huge fan support, and many D1 players. To me Football and Baseball excel in this section. I would argue they could hang with anybody from around the state and the proof is on the field. Hoops is still a little more dominant by NCS but SJS isn't far behind.

Good call wineot. Great venue. Campo is still good huh? 3-0 but haven't really played anybody.

My sources say MC will be in D4 this year. Suddenly D4 is better than D3. Campo will have cakewalk to D3 title

If im correct, MC has to finish out this year in D3 and then can return to D4. I could be mistaken, but thats my understanding

Tomorrow is the last day to petition to move divisions in NCS, we will see what MC does

Hey G61, Folsom WAS on a different level. Now that their great class has graduated, they are just like the rest of Sacramento area teams. By the way, you think Folsom wants to play in the Open Game play in to go to the state open game this year? I doubt it.

Larry- Antioch is the home team, not RC.

A few points:
The NCS needs to push all privates/ Chartes up one division. The fact that CN and Salesian can play a real small school such as Fort Bragg in the Football and Basketball playoffs respectively is a joke. This would force CVC into D1 too.

There are plenty of D3 teams with 30 kids on the roster. I don't remember the last time CN didn't make the playoffs, are they supposed to win it every year, is that the issue?

The NBL is (was) a D3/D2 league. There is only one team that barely squeaks into D1 and that is Santa Rosa High. Santa Rosa High has 850 students in the Art Quest program (most of which do not play sports, certainly not football). I don't consider them a true D1 program.

Is the PD going to rank CN under small schools now since they are D4?

There's nothing stopping the Art Quest students from playing sports, and some do, though maybe not football. I've been told by a Santa Rosa coach that the reason SR is D1 is that the students at the adjacent Ridgeway School, which is basically a last-resort school for all the square pegs who can't fit into the round hole of regular high school, are eligible to play sports at SR (which none of them do) and count as part of their enrollment.
