In checking MaxPreps today Eureka has dropped to 7th after a loss to Arcata with Clayton Valley moving to 6th and O'dowd at 8th. I still think O'dowd gets the 6th spot if they beat Oakland Tech on Thursday, but with MaxPreps rankings who knows.

Does the Diablo League(Acalanes and CVC) have League playoffs? Potential loss for CVC that could drop them out of the 6 spot.
Same with BOD...does their league have a league playoff with another h2h matchup with Piedmont looming then?
One would assume how those 2 league playoffs matchups playout would decide the 6 spot.

I know the DAL has playoffs and I'm pretty sure the O'Dowd league does too.

That's telling me that if Eureka wins their league playoffs...a BIG if as they have lost TWICE to Arcata already and CVC loses to Acalanes, that Eureka still could sneak into that 6 spot...BOD (67) with another win over Piedmont might not be able to make up that ground.
I dont know if the "league champion" status in Eureka"s league is for regular season champion or league playoff champion. If it's for regular season champion (Arcata) then the 3 seed won't have to go to Eureka for that game.

O'Dowd league does not have playoffs so they will not play Piedmont again. As we don't know what goes into MaxPreps rankings I wonder how much a lost to Acalanes would hurt Clayton Valley in the algorithm as it would be considered a quality lost. I think that even if Eureka wins their league the best win between the final three would be if O'Dowd's beats Tech which should move them up, but don't know if it would be enough.

CN will be league champ so if that is the 4/5 the game its at CN regardless.
If CLET is the 3? Then that BOD (at 6) scenario could mean CLET at BOD.(if BOD is designated as league champ)
One would think..hope? that common sense would prevail (yeah right) and that no matter what happens that either CVC or BOD would get placed as the 6 seed.
But based on football and San Marin getting thrown into the OPEN as the 8 to face DLS tells me common sense is dead.

Last season Piedmont and O’Dowd tied with Piedmont being designated the league champion. I have no clue how they came to that conclusion or how it will impact this year.
It does appear that even if Carondelet were to win the EBAL playoff, and SRV becomes the #3 seed, SRV as the regular season champion would get the designated home game status.
From the EBAL bulletin:

MP Algorithm please explain this to us. Arcata just beat Eureka H2H TWICE and latest ranking still has Eureka above Arcata??
And the other 2 losses by Eureka were to St. Bernard's (25-1 #13) and San Marin (20-6 #19) both ranked below them in NCS..

I guess the algorithm at MaxPreps has been listening to us because O'dowd is now the ranked 6th with CVC at 7th and Eureka at 8th. I have zero clue what changed except Piedmont did beat Antelope which raised their rating that could have led to O'dowd moving up as they have beaten them earlier in the season..
I was mistaken... Myella Chapman she's a sophomore (2027) and has offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Utah, Florida State, UW, Arizona & Cal among others...
Im not sure what she is ranked in her class...but she's no joke.

I am very curious to see how that 6th seed plays out. How does the MaxPreps algorithm look at a CVC loss to Acalanes compared to a Salesian win over lower ranked Pinole Valley team. Also, this is another good example how NCS should mix in a human element as well as both CVC and O'dowd beat Salesian by 20 plus in their match ups.

San Marin got the 8 seed in the OPEN after going 2-3 in their league including losing to Vintage the 2nd to last game of league.

They are locked in to six teams. They only have so many NorCal berths.
As for the rankings changing, one game generally doesn't move the numbers that much. If it stays like this, Damian Young, who was an assistant at Carondelet and Miramonte with Kelly Sopak, will face his old boss in the first round.

I would generally agree that 1 loss doesn't change the numbers that much but BODs loss to OT dropped them from 6 to 8...
CVC # 6 /57 (state) 21-6
SALESIAN #7/64 19-8
CVC 21-7 with a loss today vs Acalanes..
Salesian 20-8 with a win today vs PV and a currently 1.1 higher SOS.(although 1 would assume a game vs Acalanes would raise CVC SOS).
So the question becomes does a CVC loss to Acalanes drop them enough for a Salesian win over PV to move them ahead of CVC?
And honestly.... the committee should just throw the MP ranking for 6 out the window anyhow and just put BOD there who has a split with Piedmont and has a 20 pt win over Salesian.

And there you have it, Salesian #6. The problem is Bishop O'Dowd has only had 23 contacts when the maximum is 26(not including league tournaments). O'Dowd has a 67-47 win over Salesian 3 weeks ago. I am not a GURU but my guess is the maxpreps ratings formula does include total games played. Head to head contacts was always the first criteria. When completing play-off applications coaches spend hours dissecting schedules to rank teams where they belong in all divisions. There are plenty of people like northbayguru and myself that would be willing to sit on a committee to make this fair and accurate. It is unfortunate that the NCS is 1) lazy and 2) crooked.

I understand that NCS gets so many births for Nor Cal, but at the same time there should be 8 teams in the open division if the goal of this is competitive equity. The talent gap between the top 8/9 teams and the rest of the teams in NCS is so huge that D1 is not going to be competitive with a team like O'dowd in D1.
I need someone to explain Eureka’s ranking. Lost to Arcata twice. Best win is against a Northern Section team with an inflated record vs rural teams. They also lost to San Marin. How are they still ahead of Arcata?
Two more losses. One less win. The algorithm loves wins. (That's why O'Dowd is behind Salesian.)
