Sequoia's Afu to UC Merced

Soana Afu, a 6-0 senior post at Sequoia in Redwood City, will play for UC Merced in 2019-20. Her scholarship package was announced earlier this week on the Sequoia campus. Afu was a key inside operative for the Cherokees (soon to be known as the Ravens in the wake of a trustees' controversial move to change the 90-year-old name) during their 25-5 season in 2018-19. Sequoia won the PAL South championship, the PAL post-season tournament title and the CCS Division I crown. That last accomplishment marked Sequoia's first-ever CCS girls' championship in any sport. Sequoia will return four of its five starters, including 6-2 powerhouse post Talita Falepapalangi, in 2019-20.

On a side note, Sequoia will be severely challenged in 2019-20 PAL South action, certainly by Aragon and perhaps by Mills and Capuchino as well. All four teams will be in the title mix next season.
