Some WCAL perspective

A number of worthy contributors to this electronic debating forum have opined that the 2017 version of WCAL varsity football has been less than dominating, top to bottom. There is some truth to that dismissive view. Bellarmine, usually a bonafide powerhouse, had one of its worst teams in years; none of the three SF teams was special and Mitty's disgruntled administration, so unhappy with its middling performance on the gridiron, asked its head coach to tip-toe quietly out the door and seek other employment, perhaps in a different field of endeavor. That said, CIF bowl victories this week by Serra and St. Francis, both 50-year WCAL charter members by the way, would indicate at least some measure of football competence within the league (founded in 1967). In fact, it's not a bad showing at all when teams from the same league capture such crowns, both of which were among the top five in terms of overall competitive CIF toughness. And there's one more thing: Don't forget that St. Francis finished third in the final WCAL standings, not second. They finished behind Valley Christian, as well as league champion Serra. Which makes Valley Christian a solid football citizen too.

The league has a couple state championship wins this year... someone who says this was a weak year for the league is full of bs.

Would agree that using the word "weak" is misplaced. How about "slightly down overall compared to some prior seasons?" That seems fair.

WCAL was fortunate in the state playoffs this year to play weaker teams in lower divisions due to early season losses against other sections and placing the open runner ups from three divsions into lower divisions. Having said that I was impressed with Serra and rooted for HMB. Perhaps the other sections should implement the same playoff format to make it more fair. Overall a grear year for Nor Cal
