WCAL Football 2019-20 - NCP's All NorCal Team + SF Chron All Metro & Merc Teams

I'd love to see one game where Serra starts off with 2nd-3rd stringers against Riordan's 1st team and spot them say a 21-0 going into halftime, then put in the starters a few minutes into 3rd quarter and see how good they really are. Play with adversity and urgency.

Is Riordan really that desperate? Very doubtful. Would be shocked if any Serra opponent would desire such disrespect.

No doubt, the addition of VC to the MCAL, the Mostly Catholic Athletic League, was a sea change. The league, at least in football (and baseball too) has never been the same.
'

Agreed.....Valley not only transformed the WCAL, but also caused seismic shifts in the southern/eastern parts of the Santa Clara Valley. VC has 100 + students in their program, the majority of whom pre-2000 or so, would have attended East Side schools like Oak Grove, Piedmont Hills, Santa Theresa, or SJ Unified schools like Gunderson, Leland, or Pioneer. Campbell and Morgan Hill schools also lose students to VC. Machado (and Diatte in baseball) has built a strong program, which attracts elite athletes from all over the area, which has made the WCAL more competitive, and the BVAL less so. VC's emergence as a power, demographic shifts, and safety concerns about football have re-shaped high school football in Santa Clara County forever.

Iamgearyblvd, nice shot at Riordan. The Crusaders will be just fine even though the Padres will likely roll as they have done so to significantly higher ranked teams this season. Perhaps worry about your own school rather than throwing shade at a rebuilding program that has caused a lot of excitement and participation at all levels on Frida Kahlo Way. Good luck and good health to all the teams!

Excellent analysis. You might include other South Bay WCAL schools on your list of entities that now lose premier athletes to VC.

So when Golden State does that during the a regular season game where they come out really flat, get down by 20+ points and then come back to win by 10 in championship team fashion thats being disrespectful? Please dont tell me great teams dont do that during a long season to challenge themselves? Great teams need motivation against teams they know they should win handily.

As much success VC has had in both football & baseball it certainly hasn't attracted much basketball talent. So obvious question where are the basketball players going to? They can't all be going to Mitty and lesser extent Bellarmine. OK let me clarify that yes apparently ALL the girl basketball players do go to Mitty where Mitty girls won league titles at all 3 levels last season going 64-3 for the season 40-1 in WCAL league play while the Mitty boys took home the varsity title. Bells might give the Monarchs a run for their money this coming season as Bells JV team in '18 went 23-0 over all and 14-0 in WCAL league play. As for Valley Christian basketball - varsity went 1-13 WCAL, JV's 6-8, Frosh 1-13. How is it VC's BB program can be so horrendous year after year? [I've heard the FB players only play the one sport, but not sure how accurate that is].

This happens vs SH as well. Not going to exclude them from being the dominated team. Only speaking of this scenario due to the scheduled game this week. If you like I can repeat this when SH plays Serra so you dont feel like Im being biased.

Hey Jordan 24, can you please use Phelan Ave. to keep it simple ? I had no idea what the hell you were referencing ? LMAO

A couple of VC's best FB players (rb/cb D'Von Lang and te/de Skylar Loving-Black) also started on the BB team last season as have a number of FB players in recent years.

Another hint that Riordan is on the right track: Both JV and frosh units are competitive this year, at least thus far. That would seem to bode well for the future.

WCAL Football 2019-20: This Weeks Games – St. Ignatius vs SHC

What to expect from the Wildcats vs Irish Game

We have an S.I. team at 2-1 who won somewhat easily over Palo Alto by 23-7, lost in a close game to SHP of Atherton by 28-21 and then bounced back to take down Gonzaga Prep of WA by 37-22 in a bit of pay-back for last years loss to GP. It appears S.I. is going in the right direction although had the Wildcats pulled out the SHP game they’d be at an impressive 3-0 heading into the league opener. The SHC Irish have “issues” so to speak and the high hopes of many fans [myself included] of this SHC showing improvement over last years’ team simply hasn’t materialized. Even with the merging of the JV and varsity teams the Irish simply have not shown much on the field over their first 3 games: Irish opened season with a sobering 44-14 loss to Acalanes [though Acalanes is a solid team and now 4-1], the Irish followed that with their best effort of the 3 games in losing to Palma 35-21 in which was a close game for much of the game – with the Irish up 14-0 early and looking good.. until Palma scored 35 unanswered points. The last game was a 35-14 loss to Aptos. SHC in points scored = 49 and points allowed 114. In comparison S.I. has scored 81 and allowed 67, so a sizeable margin between the 2 teams.

S.I. is ranked currently as the 10th best team in CCS while SHC is ranked 30th. The Wildcats of S.I. are coming off their best performance in the win over Gonzaga Prep who was rated/ranked higher than S.I. before that game. On the flip side SHC is coming off its weakest performance against Aptos. Lets take a look at last weeks games;

Aptos 35-14 over Irish: Aptos almost exclusively runs the ball and they did not meet much resistance from the SHC defense. Aptos #1 RB rushed for 140 yards and 3 TD’s on just 12 carries while the team overall rushed for 297 yards & 5 TD’s on 34 carries [a 9-yard avg]. The Irish offense consisted of one Cian Dowling at QB – Dowling was 13/23 passing for 93 yards, a TD and an INT. In addition Dowling rushed 21 times for 115 yards and a TD. If the Irish are to increase their scoring they must be able to spread the ball around a it more to take some of the pressure off Dowling [your QB rushing 21 times will not bode well vs VC, SF or Serra].

S.I. 37-22 over Gonzaga Prep: the Wildcats did a credible job in stopping GP’s rush game and S.I. went up early 20-0 and then leading at the ½ by 20-7. S.I.’s versatile Teddye Buchanan had a monster game passing 10/11 for 166 yards and 3 TD’s along with an additional 51 yards rushing and a TD – S.I. as a team rushed for 145 yards. Did I mention Buchanan also is an anchor point on defense? When Buchanan is not at QB the Wildcats insert another “athlete” at that position in Zachary Taylor-Smith who is also quite capable and a 2-way player as well. S.I. has found its run game, the Wildcat D is playing well and S.I. has Teddye Buchanan.

Conclusion: If the Irish can get motivated for any game this is it. As opposed to the Aptos team St. Ignatius can both run and pass which will test the Irish D immediately. SHC will have to play at least as well as in the first ½ of the Palma game to keep this game remotely close. In short S.I. is rated a better team than the 3 teams SHC has already lost to. Lastly S.I. has not likely forgotten losing to the Irish last season by 26-21 and will not want a repeat of that game

Next Up: Mitty vs Bells

You're right about one thing you mentioned earlier. The Irish have to play 4 quarters. SHC played Palma close until that bad call that called a TD a "fumble" and that just took the wind out of their sails. I didn't see the Aptos game but it played out much the same way. Play well for a half then let-up. The motivation is there but the key is coaching and the rest is playing smart for the whole game.

Reading the game summaries and from what I've seen SHC can perform well, but younger players who would otherwise be on JV can wear down and make needless mistakes - I believe in the Aptos game SHC had something like 8 penalties for 85 yards. Its up to the coaches to make whatever changes are necessary to keep the games from going south in the 2nd 1/2. Cian Dowling seems like a heck of a player and still only a junior - just needs some help on offense and added D against the run. Irish_Cheers you've seen the games so what tempo are they playing at? It would make sense for the coaches to slow it down to give inexperienced varsity players a bit of breather in between plays and also think about the play longer in order to avoid needless penalties [make any sense?].

Yes, it makes sense. They seem to be playing at an even tempo. I'm sure they heard it from the coach about the penalties. Nothing kills drives worse than that.

I'd love to see one game where Serra starts off with 2nd-3rd stringers against Riordan's 1st team and spot them say a 21-0 going into halftime, then put in the starters a few minutes into 3rd quarter and see how good they really are. Play with adversity and urgency.

OK moving on... Valley Christian & St. Francis will be live-streamed tomorrow evening NFHS.
I'll post my last 2 reviews of WCAL games after a large cup of java tomorrow AM...
Can't wait for Lancers vs Warriors!

WCAL Football 2019-20: This Weeks Games – Bells vs MItty

What to expect when Bells & Monarchs collide:

An interesting game for sure and difficult to predict after last weeks Bells upset win over Vintage of Napa. Projections show Mitty as a 2 score favorite, but again I would not want to bet the house on the score of this game. Mitty had the impressive opening win over Palma by 47-31, then mauled an undermanned Oakland team by 47-8 before falling flat in a 35-9 loss to Marin Catholic. Not quite sure what happened to the Monarchs in the loss, however the defense had a poor showing and the offense was not much better. The Bells had 2 dreadful losses to start the season losing 51-14 to M-A which was over at ½ time followed by a 38-10 loss to Clovis North.
The subsequent win of 21-13 over Vintage was truly an upset as Vintage was a double-digit favorite going into the game and rated about even with Palma to give fans an idea.

On offense Mitty averages approx.. 32 points per game and the Bells approx. 12, while on defense the Monarchs are allowing 16 per game and the Bells 36 or a differential of 40 points per game between the 2 teams. As for their 3 opponents the Bells had the tougher pre-season schedule and M-A accounted for 51 of those points scored. The big question is what if any “adjustments” did Coach Janda of Bellarmine make for the Vintage game? The Bells had both their best offense game as well as best defense game in scoring 21 and allowing 13 against a pretty decent team. While the Bells are coming off their best game we do not know what to expect of this Mitty team as well. A good effort against Palma before getting clobbered by Marin Catholic and then a “scrimmage-type” game against a weak Oakland High team. Will MItty get back on track with a convincing win or run into a resurgent Bells team?

Conclusion: If Coach Janda has his team primed like the Vintage game then we’ll see a competitive contest within 10-points. I’m not sure about the possibility of another Bells upset though as Mitty should [and I say “should” carefully] be a step above Vintage in ratings. If the Bells show up as they did their first 2 games then Mitty wins in a runaway such as 48-21.

Next Up: SF vs VC

Shall we cut to the chase: If Mitty cannot handle a deeply flawed Bellarmine team, the Monarchs will be exposed as an overhyped outfit _ again.

And thus why we play the game....

A rumor has surfaced that coach Janda himself may be suiting up using a number not on the Bells roster...

WCAL Football 2019-20: This Weeks Games – Valley Christian vs St. Francis

What to expect from VC -SF in the NorCalPreps Game of the Week:

VC the pre-season favorite to win WCAL has not disappointed in their first 3 games. First up the Warriors took care of business with a pay-back win over a solid Wilcox team in a 23-13 victory. VC players had their eye on this game early on as Wilcox had defeated VC last season in the opening game by 10-6. The Wilcox game was close though and VC was aided by 3 FG’s [3 for 3] which otherwise was a 2 TD game by both teams. Next up VC had a relatively easy time ina 37-0 win over Pleasant Valley followed by a “business-like” win of 34-12 over Clovis North. 3 games and 3 wins of which the Wilcox game was closer than the score might indicate. One thing there is no question about is VC’s defense which was solid in 2018 and even better so far this season. VC has the ability to control the game with their rushing game and VC’s QB has been even more efficient so far than last season as well.

St. Francis had the 2 toughest opponents of any WCAL team and lost both games by wide margins. First a 42-14 to Corona Del Mar a top 20 team in CA and the Lancers were unable to contain their high octane offense. Next up a 48-0 shut-out to DLS before an easy win of 44-12 over a weak Oak Grove team. SF seems down a bit from last season and lost 2 dynamic 2-way players in Evan Williams and Maurice Wilmar. This is evident both on offense and defense in that QB Daly does not have the go-to WR he had in Evan Williams and the secondary defense has not been up to par as well [against Corona Del Mar it was evident the SF secondary simply could not cover the WR’s].

Conclusion: As Defense_Rules poster pointed out the last 11 games between these 2 teams were within 7 points. VC looks to be even better than last season while SF may have dropped off a level. I think this game breaks the recent history “of within 7” and VC should have the ability to pull away. With VC’s defense I don’t believe the Lancers posses the ability to outscore VC and I have VC winning by 10+ such as 24-14 or 27-14.

Because VC is favored, should it start its second and third stringers and get down 14-0 by halftime to test itself?

Sure why not? lol. This VC team is like the 92 Dream Team! St. Francis kids are waiting outside their locker rooms to get their autographs!

Last Minute Predicts from knowledgeable fans out there?

NorCalPicks has fans choosing VC exclusively as the winner and Colhenry has stated anything other than a Mitty running clock over the depleted Bells is simply unacceptable.

I will follow the pack in both games as I have both VC & Mitty winning rather handily....

Folsom vs M-A will be interesting in regards Serra...

WHOA! SF returns opening kick-off for about 90 yards for a TD! What a start!

Serra taking advantage of R fumblei on its own 20 and field position. 20-0 Serra 2:59 left in half

Watching Folsom vs M-A game and M-A getting killed on penalties and sloppy play not to mention horrendous play-calling on offense. Unless M-A coaches make major adjustments at 1/2 time this is going to get even uglier...

Folsom vs M-A has turned ugly with Folsom going up 35-0 at the 1/2. M-A has looked terrible - penalty after penalty, bad play calling on offense and the M-A QB is probably having the worst game of his life - just threw one up for grabs and run back for a TD by Folsom besides missing wide open WR's. This one likely to go to running clock in 2nd. M-A looks totally unprepared for this game from what I've seen.

VC's #1 RB McElvane on turf for several minutes and comes hobbling off not looking good - bad sign for VC..

VC's McElvane back in, but SF's QB Daly out with shoulder injury & that could spell doom for Lancers as #2 QB just throws a pass up for grabs resulting in pick..
