WCAL Football 2019-20 - NCP's All NorCal Team + SF Chron All Metro & Merc Teams

Intriguing scenario:
  1. SHC loses to Serra; beats the Bells and loses to Riordan and finishes (1-9; 1-7)
  2. Bellarmine loses to VC, SF and SHC (2-8; 1-7)
  3. Riordan loses to SI and SF; beats SHC (3-7; 1-7)
  • Does Riordan qualify for CCS? Or..
  • If SHC beats the Bells and Riordan, it's the Irish going to CCS?
  • Bells beat SHC, the Bells move on to CCS?
Remaining Schedule
  • Bellarmine (2-5 / 1-3) - VC, @SF, @SHC *defeated Riordan 28-27 DOT
  • Riordan (2-5 / 0-4) - @SI, SF, SHC
  • SHC (0-7 / 0-4) - @Serra, BCP, @AR
Whoever finishes 6th in league will make the play-offs as an at-large team. If there is a 3 way tie for 6th at 1-6 then Bellarmine would go - they would probably have 28 CCS points vs Riordan which would have 24 CCS points and SHC would have 21 CCS points. .

Mitty making a statement that the close game with Serra was no fluke. Very impressive effort by Mitty considering the Lancers roster is twice the size. If this continues its Mitty vs S.I. for 3rd place in WCAL.

Mitty Monarchs pull ahead in game and then hold off strong late come-back by Lancers for 32-21 win with help of several FG's. Lancers now reeling after 3 league losses in a row....

Very nice W for the Monarchs. Once again, El Rambo called it. He has no peer.

Kinda challenges the roster size advantage notion. Mitty has 34 football players that can ball.

VC vs Bells

Once VC puts the game away... probably mid second quarter or start of 3rd
It would be smart of Coach Amarillas to pull his starters and save them for
the playin game next week vs SHC. Bells may be in for a tough time next week vs Irish in SF .
If SHC can beat Bells and then Riordan they are in Playoffs.

SHC will be fired up for their first win and Bells are exhausted

Well.......

Bells starting RB gets knocked out of the game in the second half with what appeared to be a concussion. Word is.. he ended up in the hospital tonight.

Most likely out next week because of concussion protocol. Wishing the young man a speedy recovery.

Yes jordan a small roster, but a loaded roster. Reminds me of little HMB 3 years ago when they went to a state bowl game with I think 28 players. Anyone else noticed how much bigger Shamir Bey is this season? I'd read pre-season that he concentrated on the weight room in the off season and put on some weight, but at times he looks like the biggest Mitty player out there. A strong win for the Monarchs.

Sad for the player ..hope he ok

Sad that it was so predictable that something like this would happen

Sad that the players are almost put in danger because the offense is so predictable that the other teams coaches , players and fans know what
play the Bells will run prior to the snap

Lucky the Qb came out ok considering they were running him right up the middle in the 4th Qtr

On a whole Bell football SAD

Running the QB up the middle against VC's formidable D-line would not be in the best interest of any team IMO.

Riordan Crusaders 2-5 at S.I. Wildcats 5-2 today 2:20 PM - Live-Streamed, see Jordan24's post above.
On another note do the Riordan Crusaders have any shot vs S.I. today? S.I. is a heavy going in by 3+ TD's.
While it would be easy to discount the Crusaders they did give Mitty a good battle barely losing by 24-21 while Mitty took down SF last nite by 32-21. Clearly that was Riordan's best outing of the season, but can they duplicate that effort possibly one more time to shock S.I.? The game this afternoon is at 2:20 on the Wildcats turf & S.I. fans should be there in numbers and revved up for a big victory over their SF rival.

Riordan Offense = Avg 21 points game while allowing 33
St. Ignatius Offense = Avg 25 points game while allowing 17

Common Opponents:
Bellarmine: Riordan lost in O/T 28-27 while S.I. won 28-7 over Bells
Valley Christian: Riordan lost 44-6 while S.I. lost 17-7

Clearly a large disparity showing and just a matter of which Riordan team shows up today. Will the Wildcats be over-confidant and take the Crusaders too lightly? Can the Crusaders coaches come up with a similar game plan as to Mitty? Can Riordan contain Teddye Buchanan? Can the Crusaders run on S.I.'s D? Many questions all of which will be answered in the Sunset district of SF in a few hours....

Simple question - what kind of injury??

I see on Serra's roster they have listed 4 other players who can play the QB position. In event McLemore can't go then WHO is the best option?

Pleeze tell us McLemore can go next week...

Early report was a shoulder. But it's not clear how bad it is.

OH that's not good news. If throwing shoulder a big problem & if non-throwing arm then possible he could still go.

SI 45
Riordan 0
Riordan 30 total yards of offense

I watched parts of the game and Riordan def looked like a young, inexperienced team. Needless fumbles without any contact & simply dropping the ball along with the QB throwing into coverage because of pressure in the pocket. I didn't think either of their lines played badly but the most glaring was the poor secondary coverage. S.I. was passing at will and in many cases the WR's were wide open. On one TD the S.I. QB casually rolled out in the Crusader's red zone with the WR crossing in front of him & simply tossed the ball to the wide open WR - as in not cocking his arm, but tossing over a linemans' head like a one-armed basketball shot. Another play that was telling - S.I. kicked off after another TD and the receiving Crusaders let the ball bounce and no one was attempting to pick it up or fall on it [?]. Miraculously in the scrum a Crusader came up with the ball - even the announcers' were saying "its a live ball & players are standing around it - you have to pick it up!"

OK don't want to be too harsh on Crusaders, but 30 yards offense? How on earth did this team take Mitty down to the wire? This game clearly showed how far Riordan still has to go - with only one other team possibly as a league win - and that team being winless on the season.

I feel that every team is entitled to one bad game, where the emotions aren’t there, or mistakes just pile up. When there are several games like that, then the trend demonstrates where a team really is.

WCAL Football 2019-20 Epic Serra 8-0 vs VC 8-0 Much Anticipated Game This Week!

As often happens the WCAL football Gods have thrown fans the proverbial curve-ball by sidelining Serra's star QB Daylin McLemore going into the biggest most anticipated game of the season in the WCAL. This was bitter news to Serra fans as the injury came in a loss to the weakest opponent of the season for Serra in playing the winless Sacred Heart Cathedral team of SF - an undermanned squad that had just lost to Valley Christian by 61-0. Last season Serra with its all-time leading passer Luke Bottari was humbled by the Valley Christian Warrior's to the tune of 37-6 in a game which VC dominated from start to finish. This season VC returned much of that team as did Serra with the exception of the Serra passing leader Bottari. In his place as the replacement was one Daylin McLemore a bigger, faster dual-threat QB who seemed up until his injury to be just as suitable a replacement. Possibly McLemore would be the difference maker in a rematch between the 2 NorCal powers this season in what has shaped up to be the WCAL Championship this week. Currently Serra is ranked as #3 in NorCal behind DLS and FOlsom while in almost every poll VC is ranked right behind Serra at #4. For those who know the teams and I am one of those fans the computers have Serra as the favored team, while all factors point to VC being the favorite including the lopsided win last season.
Now with the Padres losing their leader on offense the VC Warrior's become an overwhelming favorite in this game.
Serra has the league leading offense while VC the league leading defense and arguably #2 defense in NorCal [honestly there isn't much argument at all]. Once the talented & most effective/productive QB in WCAL goes down and a younger understudy has to step in against the likes of Valley Christians' D-line all bets are off.

I'll shed further light on this topic tomorrow as having just gotten our power back this afternoon and some catching up needed. In closing what a challenge this has got to be for the Serra coaching staff and even more so for the young QB they are about to send out to face Valley Christian.

WCAL Football 2019-20: Serra and New #2 QB vs #2 Defense in NorCal - Valley Christian

So it appears we may have an entirely different game we are looking at coming up this week. I'll review the game as it stands now and see if we can get any clue as to what to expect. Previous we were looking at Serra with its candidate for SF Chron "Metro Player of the Year" QB Daylin McLemore 6'4-215 and the WCAL's #1 offense going against the WCAL's #1 Defense. Not only is VC's "D" the #1 WCAL defense but I believe is 2nd only to DLS in NorCal having given up a mere 45 points for the entire season which gentlemen is less than 6 points per game - stingy to say the least. Serra overall was rated a slight favorite for this game though I had the game as "even". WIth the loss of Serra's #1 QB McLemore the advantage clearly shifts to VC due to the Serra offense adjusting in 1-week to a new field general leading the high powered offense. In losing McLemore Serra's QB was the highest rated QB in the WCAL having passed for 982 yards in 5-games along with 10 TD's and rushing for another 364 yards and 4 TD's. A true dual-threat weapon on offense Daylin will be difficult if not impossible to replace.

As it stands the word is that Coach Walsh will go with the designated #2 QB soph Dominique Lampkin 6'0-170. Lampkin a talented soph comes off last years 8-1 frosh team that was excellent and Lampkin excelled at that level and why he is on varsity and not JV. In relief of McLemore in the first 1/2 vs SHC last Saturday Lampkin had 2 rushing TD's of 25 and 45 yards while throwing a 47 yard TD pass to Nate Sanchez and so accounted for 3 of Serra's 5 scores. Its important to note that this however was against SHC and they are at the opposite end of the spectrum of the defense that the soph QB Lampkin will see when he stares across the line at the formidable VC D-line. Serra's offense was fairly balanced between its rushing and passing game averaging comfortably over 300 yards per game with the emphasis on the pass game both short and long. VC's offense relies mainly on its rushing game using a number of RB's and grinds out on avg 260 yards per game. VC has speed to break off long runs and power RB's when short yardage is required. With its massive O-line VC can wear down any team it faces if it controls the ball long enough. VC also has one of the best and most efficient QB's in WCAL in Cory Taylor who has a number of excellent WR's at his disposal in including one that is the fastest player in the WCAL and a very talented frosh who has quickly become their go-to weapon. So the Padres have a difficult chore in trying to move the ball against the best defense they have faced this season and also on defense to stop a machine-like running game while covering several dangerous receivers.

What are Serra/Coach Walsh's options if any? Surely a difficult challenge for any coach going into a game against an undefeated opponent without possibly Serra's best player. VC without a doubt will be making adjustments to deal with Serra's young QB and will attempt to apply pressure to the max. Lampkin fortunately is similar to McLemore in that he is also a true double-threat QB and can run as well as throw. As to his ability to get the ball to his WR's under intense pressure that remains to be seen. One concern will be Serra's run game and if the Padres can generate any yardage against VC. In last years contest except for one play the Padres had negative yardage rushing against the Warrior's. If Serra cannot run in this game and generate at least a 3-4 yard APC then the Padres will have to win through the air which is a tall order for a QB with little experience. Unlike VC this Serra team like last years' does not run the ball a majority of downs and does not utilize a steady series of RB's like VC. Serra has a couple of options in changing formations from the spread to the double-wing or single-wing and using a 2 or 3 RB full back-field. While Serra has used RB Nate Sanchez 5'10 - 180 and RB Vince Poni 5'10-160 they really need to incorporate and make use of their power back Jackson Lataimua 5'11-195 against this physical VC defense. If Lampkin is not up to the task then Walsh must have a 2nd option which with to go with. Possibly a full back-field with another RB/WR at QB with a run option attack? Will the Serra plan be to speed up the game to prevent VC's "D" from substituting or slow the game down knowing that may benefit their young QB? Special teams may play a big part in this game in terms of field position and possible turn-overs. VC lost their talented kicker Ramirez for FG's several weeks ago and cannot count on that advantage in this game - Ramirez had made 5 FG's good out to 43 yards this season.

Conclusion: VC is now the clear favorite going into this undefeated match-up. VC still has the #1 Defense and how well Serra's offense performs is an unknown at this juncture. Needless to say [but I'll say it anyway] it is a lot of pressure all at once on Serra's NEW soph QB.

* Note: the last time I remember a situation anything similar to this was when Serra faced De La Salle with its new soph QB 15-year old Leki Nunn. Nunn one of Serra's best players ever was supremely talented, but as a soph was prone to both fumbles and INT's his soph year. Execution will mean everything in this Serra-VC game and fumbles and/or INT's on either side could doom that team.

Excellent write-up as usual. A couple of other game plan considerations to think about are the fact that part of the reason for VC's success in limiting points is that they run a vanilla offense and rarely turn the ball over providing their opponents short fields or defensive scores. It will be interesting to see if the D coordinator turns up the pressure or is more patient and sees if they can get adequate pressure with their front four without blitzing. I think one of the key match-ups is to see if the Serra O-line can hold up and make VC blitz to create pressure or not. Serra has thrived on getting their weapons in space and forcing a missed tackle for big plays. VC may want to see if the young QB can execute 10-12 play drives and keep everything in front of them with adequate back end support.

While the WCAL championship is the big prize for the winner. It is interesting to note that if Serra losses they may still be the number 1 seed for the play-offs. Here is what it looks like if Serra losses to VC and both teams win their final game.

Serra Points - 18 points for 9 wins, 10 points for schedule, 4 points for playing conference champions (Pittsburg, Menlo-Atherton, St. Mary's, Valley Christian), and 10 bonus points for play top 100 teams (Pittsburg, Menlo-Atherton, St. Mary's, VC, and Mitty-SI winner) and 2 bonus points for playing a team ranked between 101-150 (SI-Mitty loser, St Francis.) and 39 points for being the #2 ranked team in CCS - total = 83 points

VC Points - 20 points for 10 wins, 10 points for schedule, 3.5 conference championship points (2.5 for winning WCAL, Wilcox - with potential for another 0.5 points if Pleasant Valle upsets Chico this week), 6 point for playing top 100 teams (Serra, Wilcox, SI-Mitty Winner) 3 points for playing a team ranked between 101-150 (Si-Mitty loser, Saint Francis and Clovis West) and 40 points by being the top ranked CCS team = 82.5 points

The two key games are Lincoln VS St. Mary's this week where Lincoln is a one point favorite, but St. Mary's has a higher calpreps ranking. If St. Mary's losses Serra will lose two points (one for conference champion and one bonus point as St. Mary's will most likely drop from the top 100 to the 101-150 group. If Lincoln wins Serra will be a #2 seed in the CCS play-offs.

The Other key game is Pleasant Valley vs Chico where Chico is projected to win by 11. A win by Pleasant Valley would give them at least a share of the title. Depending on other games this could be co-championship which would give VC 0.5 points and the CCS #1 seed (regardless of the Lincoln - St. Mary's result) or Tri-Champion which would give VC only 0.33 points and leave them as the #2 seed if St. Mary's beats Lincoln.

Three way tie for the WCAL title is also a possibility. If VC beats Serra, and Mitty beats SI and VC in the final game of the season, Mitty shares a piece of the title. Crazier things have happened.

Serra also still has to play S.I. who gave VC a very tough game. The Wildcats have improved vastly since the start of the season and should be competitive with Serra dependent on how Serra operates without McLemore at the helm.
