WCAL Football 2019-20 - NCP's All NorCal Team + SF Chron All Metro & Merc Teams

As of today neither the Riordan/SHC game nor the Serra/S.I. game is posted as being live-streamed on NFHSnetwork [SO glad I purchased their yearly subscription! - the most promising game being HMB who will surely torch TN in their annual rivalry]. The only WCAL game televised is SF VS Bells 7PM Friday if you're desperate for excitement.
I think both the ARHS/SHC AND Serra/S.I. games will be worth watching & I may make the trek to the Wildcat campus to see what is the best S.I. team in quite awhile..
The SI/JS game will be shown by the SI Athletics channel on You Tube. I watched the SI/VC game this way. Even for an electronic moron like myself it was easy to bring it up on my Smart TV. Only a little bit of homering (Bob Sarlatte) by the announcers.

The question of Serra's #2 QB Lampkin's arm strength and accuracy remains to be seen. The injured QB McLemore could go deep and was extremely accurate. Last week vs Valley Christian the Padres passing attack was fairly conservative with mostly swing passes, bubble screens etc. Serra has some very good WR's and deep threats in Loville, Sanchez and Mahasin if Lampkin can deliver the ball to them. VC had the #1 rated D in WCAL so will be interesting to see how the Padres who "were" averaging 196 yards passing per game do against the Wildcats.
Those four players you mentioned are so fast. If they can get in open space or deep they won't be caught. I would hope SI has learned from the VC game. VC converted two huge gains passing on 3rd and long. These two conversions resulted in two 4th quarter TD's and ultimately a VC win. SI has gotten better as the season has progressed. They have also added J. Shannon who has been very nicely worked into the mix. The Cats also might have a little bit of lady luck going this season. They have missed playing against the top QB's, Daly, Bey and now McLemore. In order to prevail, SI will obviously have to play the game of their lives, especially the defense. This is more than possible. They better be ready because the boys coming up from W20th are hungry, fit, big and FAST !

One problem for the Padres going forward: Their offense is not the same since their terrific QB went down with an injury. It's still functional, but it appears to be no longer a scoring juggernaut. The soph QB is a nice athlete, fast and nimble. But it remains to be seen if he can direct a devastating passing attack, both short and long. So Serra is not the same team we saw a few weeks ago. Along those lines, regarding Saturday's contest vs. SI, it would be surprising if the Wildcat coaches don't force Serra to beat them with the pass, especially the downfield variety.

I agree with you about the soph QB. He has 4 more games to get some more experience under his belt against some pretty good teams.

If the Padres have a rematch against VC that might be a good bellwether of where he is at

Games Tonite & Tomorrow:

Serra at S.I. - expect big home crowd, best S.I. team in years', will S.I.'s Teddye be available? Will Padres be down after emotional win over VC? S.I.'s defense may be 2nd best Padres have faced this season? S. I. will test Padre secondary with their passing game. Serra 21-17 [* Teddye Buchanan to play tomorrow]

WCAL football 2019-20 - Bells vs St. Francis

Bells lead Lancers by 7-0 mid 2nd quarter which in itself is a bit shocking. Bells outnumbered and out-sized and nowhere near the athletes SF has. SF has had penalties and sloppy play so far, while Bells grinding it out bit by bit. Bells using another new soph QB who has been hit and miss but made some key throws [a Bells QB passing ??].
Also this soph QB made an excellent scramble about 20 yards for the lone TD so far.

Ha, ha - WCAL75, you can pick up that flag - I’m pretty sure there were more than a few Lancer fans biting their nails in the first 1/2..
Imagine the Bells holding SF on a 4th & 1..

I had VC over Mitty by 2 scores at 28-14 and VC shuts-out the Monarchs by 28-0 with Shamir Bey returning to action.
VC's defense is something else allowing an average of 4-points per game during the 7 league games [which I'm guessing is a record]. Will there be a rematch between VC & Serra in CCS Playoffs?

As to the VC win over Mitty Isaiah McElvane ran wild scoring 3 TD's and rushing for 200 yards on 15 carries.

Soph Qb for Bell is Wade Smith who has been main guy since game 2.
He could be a good one IF (and considering the current coaches it’s a monumental IF) he ever gets properly developed.

HazeG the Bells soph QB Wade Smith looked good from what I saw and especially for a 1rst year soph on varsity. The announcers said that the Bells had a soph QB last season as well - there was a soph on roster shown as QB but did he play much if at all at the position? [then again one of the SF student announcers said that "Bellarmine had a pretty good season last year" so their info is a bit limited in some respects..

Soph Qb last year is Jr this year #14 Moreno. He is used mostly for QB running plays. He is probably the best athlete on the team and is 6’2” and 215. He would be a great LB/ RB for Bells . For sure he would help the Bells D somewhere . He is very underused . He was out last night with and injury

It’s hard to overcome a star qb1 being out, but man the film is out on Serra. If you can’t spin the ball downfield no amount of screens will move the chains consistently down field. Credit to the wildcats, excellent QB and stout defensive box.

I wonder if the coaching staff is simply trying to protect Lampkin (inexperienced), or right now they really have no faith in him throwing downfield. I’m sure the playbook is limited but you would expect a little more. Also, I’ve noticed how much the Padres defensive game plan has been soft, bend try not to break. Tons of respect being shown to SI qb, but it’s killing the Padres. Also the tackling has been putrid.

S.I.'s game plan worked to perfection and Serra for the most part had no answers on either offense or defense. Simply put Serra was out-played & out-coached in this one. S.I.'s Teddye Buchanan was terrific and Danny Ryan is easily the MVP of the game - simply unstoppable! You'd think after Ryan caught a 1/2 dozen passes + a TD in the 1rst 1/2 that maybe Serra would double-up on him[?] which the announcers wondered aloud about as well. I guess to play against the pass on defense Serra was playing soft against the run and it clearly showed as little or no pressure on S.I.'s QB and RB's were getting open holes for easy gains. Serra's soph QB played admirably under pressure in his 2nd game & the inexperience showed in knowing when and when not to run as well as pass. One thing is for sure though is that Lampkin is as slippery & elusive as they come - his 4th down & 10 conversion towards end of the game was unbelievable.
So the obvious question which will be repeated many, many times to come is: should Serra have taken the final PAT off the board and gone to O/T?

I liked the call to go for 2 and was hoping the Padres would go from the 1.5 yard line with the double-wing using Lataimua the power back straight up the middle. Instead they did go with the double-wing, but using Sanchez to the right. It almost looked like Sanchez slipped & was called down just before reaching the ball across the line - both the announcers thought he had broken the plane. So what did everyone else see?

I can't say I fault the call to go for two but the feel of the game seemed to me to be kick the extra point. I thinks Serra held SI scoreless in the second half and it seemed they had the momentum after scoring twice. I thought after the first score they might go 2 on gate but they didn't like what they had.

I also thought he scored the 2pt live but after rewatching it looked short. I agree would have liked to see lataimua get the carry.

It just seemed to me that Lataimua at 5'11-195 would have been the smart call up the middle. By running Sanchez to the right he had to run that much further to get to the goal line. With Serra's big O-line and Lataimua right behind them 1.5 yards straight ahead was the shortest route and better bet IMO..

Great win for the S.I. program especially if they do well in playoffs.

HMB is overrated... will get run in D1... Mark my words.

Hey RunItBacPap1, I disagree.

The fact that a public school with about 900 students can compete with Catholic schools that can recruit athletes. Who are you to say that they are over-rated? They have beaten the teams that are on their schedule, that is all you can ask of a team. Persoanally, I feel like they should be the #1 seed in D2. They don't belong in D1 playing against schools with 2,000+ enrollments that can recruit and offer scholarships to the best football players in the region.

I actually think that HMB could give SI a run for thieir money. But it's kind of like comparing apples to oranges. So what if SI beats a lowly public school like HMB? With SI's endowment, and ability to attract the top talent in the region, shouldn't they be better than a lowly public school? If they were to lose, what would that say about SI?

Anyways, JM2C. Hoping that HMB gets the #1 seed in D2 which is where they belong.

Agree with pines6969 and have mentioned little HMB numerous times in this thread. HMB ranked #6 at 10-0 is the lone unbeaten team remaining in CCS and again the HMB Cougars demolition of SHP by 40-0 was nothing less than impressive. Many of their wins could have been by larger margins including rolling Terra Nova by 39-7 last nite.

Meanwhile, across town, Archbishop Riordan defeated SHC 44-7 to take back the Stanfel Cup.
It was a great day to be a Crusader. The place was packed and buzzing with students, parents, alum and friends and to honor its Seniors and partake in the Field dedication ceremony.
Congrats to the Crusaders and the 'Cats! Future is bright for City Football!
