[QUOTE="colhenrylives, post: 246827, member: 968"]Was anyone else focused on Serra's use of the radical Tackle Spread? If nothing else, it opened up huge running lanes in the middle. The new Serra QB made good use of that seldom-seen formation. Interesting and creative stuff.[/QUOTE]

Coach Walsh is creative and innovative with multiple and seldom used formations at the HS level and if nothing else the Serra offense in recent years is quite entertaining to watch. Just trying to remember if Serra ran the Wing-T trap play yesterday or not? A great play against a highly aggressive D such as Valley Christian.

Question for jordan24 or anyone out there - how much offense [numbers] did Riordan generate against the Lancers yesterday?

Quick point: Serra runs the double wing as a heavy set. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them run the wing-t.

That radical formation Saturday, the legendary Tackle Spread, was something else. I had to focus and re-focus my peepers more than once to make sure I was actually seeing what was right there in front of me. I kept thinking: Is this eight-man football? Good grief.

dcpanda is correct in that I referred to the "Wing-T" formation instead of the "double-wing" that Serra has run variations of for years'. The single-wing and double wing both employ pitches to the wing-backs while the good 'ol wing=T uses hand-offs [correct?]. So an obvious question I brought up previous - do you stick with the "double-wing" utilizing pitches to the wing-backs when inside your own red zone?

One last comment re the VC defense: Holding the Serra offense to 10 points (and fewer than 250 yards), even with a new QB at the helm, was very impressive.

The SHC vs. Riordan game will be decided the same way the Bellarmine game was. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. In the SHC vs. Bells game, neither team could stop the others' offense. I think there were only two punts the whole game. Irish had one defensive stand that stopped the Bells from scoring. It didn't help that our best two linemen were out.
Cian Dowling was a man among boys out there.

The new field looks great jordan.
As for the 120 yards Crusaders put up on Lancers that’s about what VC put up against Serra - so a good effort against SF D.

Looks great from what it used to be. The only thing lacking would be seating for baseball games. Did not see any behind the plate or dugouts or was there really a point installing bleachers for baseball because there isnt a whole lot of supporters for baseball unlike football, wrestling and hoops. Also disappointed they didnt resurface/install new rubber track on the jolly rancher. Probably not within their budget but good for their other teams who get a new field to play and practice on.

I understand that the baseball stands will be put in before baseball season starts. Dugouts are in place. New track and upgrades to the field bleachers / coaches box are phase 2...

Are you expecting a shutout, a blowout or a shootout?

I was wrong on my 77-0 Serra prediction. 77-0 requires a lot of hate. Serra doesnt have that hate. But Riordan on the other hand HATES SH. That cannot be stressed enough. I dont expect a blowout but there will be points. I will guess 47-20 Riordan.

Dont know what their statuses are but both Hester and Branch-Haynes were DNPs for the Bellarmine game. Even with them both in the lineups SH could not run and could not stop the run. And even when Bellarmine kept running the wing T over and over and over again, SH, because of lack of scheme, lack of healthy bodies, and depending on pretty much sophomores to play on the varsity level, could not stop the run. Its been the overwhelming theme for this challenging season.

The lone bright spot and I mean LONE bright spot is Tyrice Ivy is one helluva WR. I think he likely has the most receiving TDs by an SH receiver in its history. And thank heavens for him, because they have nothing else.

Agreed & not sure who is operating the camera - on the punt that just took place the camera didn't follow the ball at all and you couldn't even see the punt returner[?]. The camera is in focus, out of focus & back in focus continuously BTW the camera coverage of the JV game was perfect so it isn't the camera its the operator.
Maybe call Ghost Adventures.

Saturday's SHC/Riordan game is going to be fun. Both teams trying to get a little redemption with a league win on the last day of the season. With the new Field Dedication, it looks like there will be plenty of alumni and fans from both schools checking it out.

Riordan & SHC Game Results vs Same Opponents:

SF = 24-7 over Riordan, 42-14 over SHC
S.I. = 45-0 over Riordan, 28-14 over SHC
VC = 44-6 over Riordan, 61-0 over SHC
Bells = 28-27 over Riordan O/T, 34-26 over SHC
Mitty = 24-21 over Riordan, 39-0 over SHC
Serra = 41-0 over Riordan, 35-7 over SHC

* Riordan best game = 24-21 loss to Mitty, SHC best game = 28-14 loss to S.I.

Close game or blow-out? It appears that the Crusaders have a clear edge in this contest based upon the score differentials against same opponents. There could be some answer in the contrast of the 2 games the teams played vs S.I. as the results were starkly different. Emotions could play a part as Riordan will have Crusader fans out in mass at their new field against a rival they are not especially fond of. On the flip side the Irish know if they play well they have a shot at a win to end their season and what better win than to whip Riordan on their new field in front of their home crowd. How many Irish fans will show up in support of their team is another question, but I'm guessing a strong contingent. SHC coaches and players know that Riordan is going to run at them and the question is can the Irish stop the Crusaders' RB's or even slow them down? We should know quickly in this one where its headed by the first couple of series that Crusaders' have the ball. The Irish have faded in the 2nd 1/2 of numerous games due to lack of depth and the D simply being on the field too long. If SHC does not have success early in on defending the run then the Crusaders may be off to the races as they say. If SHC can stay close in the first 1/2 then we should have a game.
SHC will need at least 3 scores to have a chance at winning this game. If any trick plays the Irish coaches know of then now is the time to use all of 'em.

Happy for Riordan and their new home field. Their visitor dugout for baseball seems awfully small, but I am sure come season, they will have the extended dugout railing. I like the upgrade backstop but now plenty of foul balls in Riordan and CCSF parking lot. As for football, fades to southeast corner seems treacherous with the dugout, but you cant have everything. Again, good for Riordan on the upgrade to field.

A nice way for both city schools to end their season.

It might be worth noting that, just across town in the Sunset District, another WCAL contest will be played and it will be a championship ballgame to boot. SI, in the midst of one of its best football campaigns in years, will host Serra at 2 p.m. SI, with a win, can secure a share of the 2019 crown with the San Mateo Padres (and probably Valley Christian as well). It's a golden opportunity that doesn't occur often for any of the three SF WCAL entrants. The last time one of them achieved even a title tie was in the middle of the prior decade _ and that was by SI as well. None of them has sniffed a league crown since. So this game is a big deal for the City schools. A capacity gathering is expected. Parking is never a picnic in that residential neighborhood. Get there early.

As of today neither the Riordan/SHC game nor the Serra/S.I. game is posted as being live-streamed on NFHSnetwork [SO glad I purchased their yearly subscription! - the most promising game being HMB who will surely torch TN in their annual rivalry]. The only WCAL game televised is SF VS Bells 7PM Friday if you're desperate for excitement.
I think both the ARHS/SHC AND Serra/S.I. games will be worth watching & I may make the trek to the Wildcat campus to see what is the best S.I. team in quite awhile..

WCAL Football 2019-20: Serra Padres 9-0 vs St. Ignatius Wildcats 7-2 for WCAL Championship

18529640_web1_teddye-buchanan_1.jpg

S.I. Wildcats QB Teddye Buchanan (10) runs vs Gonzaga Prep in S.I.'s 37-22 win earlier this season.
[pic courtesy of SF Examiner]

In the top WCAL game this week St. Ignatius hosts the Serra Padres on the Wildcats home turf in the Sunset district of SF. Simply put if Serra wins the Padres are the undisputed & undefeated champs of the WCAL & if S.I. can pull off the win then the Wildcats throw the league championship into a 3-way tie with Serra & Valley Christian who would all finish league at 6-1. As S.I. does not report statistics on its games/players I will attempt to give you a better idea of its players and what Serra is facing in this game. I think more fans due to the teams exposures are a bit more familiar with the Serra team & why I'll focus more on the St. Ignatius team & players in this post.

Serra & St. Ignatius Game Scores vs Same Opponents:

Valley Christian: Serra won 10-0 while S.I. lost 17-7
Mitty: Serra won 35-29 while S.I. won 21-7
SF: Serra won 35-21 while S.I. won 35-26
Bells: Serra won 37-0 while S.I. won 28-7
Riordan: Serra won 41-0 while S.I. won 45-0
SHC: Serra won 35-7 while S.I. won 28-14

Serra best game = 10-0 shut-out win over previous unbeaten VC
St. Ignatius best game = 17-7 loss to unbeaten VC where S.I. led 7-3 starting the 4th quarter.

While we know Serra is 9-0 and S.I. is 7-2 the Wildcats record is mildly deceiving in that S.I. could easily be 9-0 as well. S.I.'s first loss was to SHP in the 2nd game of the season by 28-21 in which S.I. led the entire game until SHP scored a TD with 73 seconds remaining in the game. In the VC game the Warrior's found themselves behind in the 2nd 1/2 of a game for the first time this season after having led S.I. by 3-0 at the 1/2 [its interesting to note that Serra-VC was tied 0-0 at the 1/2 of their game]. In the 4th quarter on a pivotal play VC went on 4th and 1 and made the 1rst down by inches. After a pass and several short runs VC regained the lead by 10-7 with 10 minutes in the game. S.I. then threw aggressively down field resulting in an interception by VC all WCAL DB Kavir Bains. VC then controlled the ball with their run game scoring a final TD on a short run with 3 minutes left in game for final score of 17-7. So S.I. lost 2 close games to 2 good teams in which S.I. had a chance to win either or both.

S.I.'s Team/Players: make no mistake as this is a very good S.I. team on both sides of the ball who seems to have gotten better as the season has progressed. S.I. works well as a cohesive unit and has a number of dynamic playmakers of which several play both ways at times. S.I. uses a 2-QB system and both players are very good. The #1 QB and also LB is Teddye Buchancan 6'2-215 who is excellent at both positions. Now before I indicate Teddy's stats remember he shares time at the QB position with Zach Taylor-Smith and also missed the Mitty game last week with a leg injury so his stats would be for 8 games instead of 9. Mitty's QB Shamir Bey is the WCAL's leading passer who has also missed several games now. Serra's Daylin McLemore was among the top QB's before being injured and had a similar average per game as Bey while McLemore had the highest efficiency rating. Looking at the games and stats available S.I.'s Buchanan while sharing time at the QB position would still come in at #2 just behind Bey & McLemore in yardage and would be the league leader in passing TD's at 14 while rushing for another 5 TD's [fans feel free to correct me if you have more accurate info than I've compiled]. Buchanan's stats while sharing the position at times indicates he is the top QB in the WCAL. A big statement for sure and hopefully Buchanan is available for this weeks game. Another top player for the Wildcats is their star WR Danny Ryan the #1 pass catcher in the WCAL. Ryan 6'1-170 also a basketball player catches anything thrown his way and gets open often. Ryan has had some spectacular games and the only other WR in WCAL remotely close to him in stats is Mitty's Reymello Murphy who is the other top WR in the league. Danny Ryan leads the league in pass receptions, yards and TD's well ahead of the #2 WR Mitty's Reymello Murphy. In 9 games Ryan has 4 more TD's than Murphy with a total of 11 TD's and a dozen more passes. The #2 QB for S.I. is Zach Taylor-Smith 6'2-210 who is athletic and like Buchanan can run & pass as well as play DB as needed. In Buchanan's absence last week Taylor-Smith directed the S.I. 21-7 win over Mitty. The 3 RB's are Joe Celetano, Mark Silva & Jahsai Shannon who make for a productive short-gain run game with Celetano used in the short yardage situations. Celetano 5'11-190 is one of the talented players who plays both
ways and has several INT's as a DB. S.I. also has one of the best FG kickers' in the league. S.I.'s Kealan O'Connell has made a number of field goals including a 37-yarder. The Wildcat defense is not huge across the line, but are fast & very athletic and difficult to run against. VC's worst games rushing were against Serra and then S.I. with Serra allowing just over 2 yards per rush while S.I. allowed just over 3 yards per rush - no other team was able to contain the VC rushing attack as Serra & S.I. did.

Conclusion: Unless I am wrong these 2 teams are well matched up against each other and S.I. maybe more so than VC in playing Serra. S.I. has a quick D and a much better passing game than VC. VC was more one dimensional relying on the run game and limited play selection. S.I. has a credible run game and perhaps the best passing game in the WCAL. Cover S.I.'s top WR Danny Ryan and S.I. has several other capable pass catchers. Pressure the S.I. QB and either one Buchanan or Taylor-Smith can run. While Serra-VC was a defensive slug-fest this game could turn into a shoot-out between the 2 teams. This will be a challenge for the Serra defense and also for the new Serra QB Dominique Lampkin starting his 2nd game running the Padre offense. While Serra has had its way with St. Ignatius in recent years' this game looks to be very competitive and a close game. If S.I.'s Buchanan cannot go it will certainly be a loss for S.I. all the way around. If that is the case then S.I.'s Taylor-Smith like Serra's Lampkin will have to step up his game for the Wildcats to have a solid shot in this game. This is a difficult game to predict and in all likelihood should be a very entertaining game and possibly a 1-score game. A WCAL Championship is at stake and both teams should be ready to go along with a loud home crowd of S.I. fans who been waiting awhile for this game.

It would be a shock if this one turned out to be a blowout _ either way. If Serra's new QB can't throw deep, SI can cheat up close on receivers and cause major problems. Expect a relatively low-scoring affair. VC thoroughly controlled the Serra offense. SI, with a solid game plan and precise execution, can win this one.

I agree that S.I. has a chance to win this game. VC has the best defense and while Serra may have the best offense overall S.I. appears to have the best passing offense which makes the Wildcats a dangerous foe for the Padres.
Bottom line Buchanan is the x-factor for S.I. and if not available Serra's odds go up substantially.

Does anyone have any update status on either S.I.'s Teddye Buchanan or Mitty's Shamir Bey for this weeks games?

Riordan & SHC Game Results vs Same Opponents:

Irish more so. I haven't heard anything either way about Hester and Branch returning.

Make no mistake that the Crusaders are the favorite in this match-up. The Irish have scored more than 14 points twice this season while Riordan has done so 5 times. SHC is coming off its best offensive effort in scoring 26 points against the Bells so that is in their favor [Riordan scored 27 vs Bells]. Riordan on the other hand has been "hot & cold" week to week - such as taking Mitty down to the wire in a loss 24-21 and then a complete collapse vs S.I. in losing 45-0 [while SHC fell 28-14 vs the Wildcats]. Being a rivalry game everyone is hoping the best version of each team shows up this Saturday for a competitive game.

Riordan basically has to do ONLY three things to beat SH.
1) Run the ball. Even if you only get 3 yards on a run, SH has no one/nor scheme that can create a negative yardage play on defense.
2) Dont let Tyrice Ivy get past you, and if he does have your safety come over.
3) Spy Dowling and contain his scramble runs. That literally is their offense. Dowling takes snap, waits 2 seconds to see if Ivy has window, if not, Dowling takes off running.

If the Irish are at full strength, they win. With the injuries on defense, the Irish kept letting the Bells off the hook. SHC moved the ball at will against Bellarmine and scored 26 points in regulation. The Riordan-Bells game was tied at 14 at the end of regulation. Riordan's offense only had 30 yards against SI.

If the big boys play which Im sure they will seeing its the last game...the defense will definitely be better. Anyhow, I think this will be a game it shouldn't be a pushover by any school.

Some great comments & while Crusaders backers tend to think Riordan will roll in this one uncontested it is not a sure win by any means. It IS the last game of the regular season and last game for all intents & purposes for seniors on both teams. I believe there is more motivation for the SHC Irish as they've yet to experience a win this season and are the decided underdogs in this rivalry game. I think what it just may come down to is WHO is the best leader of these 2 teams. That is the player who can rally his team IF his team believes in him & even more so than the coach giving an inspirational speech. In the end its the players who play the game & share in the win or loss. This is in a way a championship game between these 2 teams and why it will be worth watching..

According to Cal Hi Sports should Serra win the CCS they could still not get picked to play Folsom. Central Fresno could play Folsom instead. According to Cal Hi Sports it’s a close call. I personally don’t think the call is close. Serra gets the nod

One problem for the Padres going forward: Their offense is not the same since their terrific QB went down with an injury. It's still functional, but it appears to be no longer a scoring juggernaut. The soph QB is a nice athlete, fast and nimble. But it remains to be seen if he can direct a devastating passing attack, both short and long. So Serra is not the same team we saw a few weeks ago. Along those lines, regarding Saturday's contest vs. SI, it would be surprising if the Wildcat coaches don't force Serra to beat them with the pass, especially the downfield variety.

The question of Serra's #2 QB Lampkin's arm strength and accuracy remains to be seen. The injured QB McLemore could go deep and was extremely accurate. Last week vs Valley Christian the Padres passing attack was fairly conservative with mostly swing passes, bubble screens etc. Serra has some very good WR's and deep threats in Loville, Sanchez and Mahasin if Lampkin can deliver the ball to them. VC had the #1 rated D in WCAL so will be interesting to see how the Padres who "were" averaging 196 yards passing per game do against the Wildcats.
