Terrible. Absolute Joke. Should have been 4 teams.
Nope we got DLS vs San Marin 1v8That actually makes some sense to me.
That actually makes some sense to me but I'm hearing Newman vs MC in a rematch round 1 open.Open/D1 might only be 4 teams…
Big implications down the brackets if true
MT vs OR this week. Pretty tough game for OR. MT line looks really good (offensive) but giving up 34 to Lincoln is a little concerning. One tweak to your idea could be to maybe create "enrollment" categories then create the division within those. Lump D1-D3 schools in a larger schools category and smaller schools in another.
There still has to be some weight given to school size. At the end of the regular season, Monterey Trail was ranked outside the top 16. In the 17-32 spots are teams that are down in D6. They certainly are very good teams, but it just seems inherently unfair to force them to play so far above their classification when they haven't gotten there through the continued success rule.
However, I don't think the Section wants to do any of this. I have long held the belief that they want the top 8-10 schools spread out through the divisions so that the SJS fairs better in the regional games. I also think the other sections see this as well, which is why the decision was made to pair Grant and Rocklin last year. There is no way Grant should have been in D3 and everyone knew it. The results of the game proved it.
You never know.. Sometimes those Aussies can ball. I'm sure Coach Bennett from St Mary's will be watching. That little Australian team is going to get destroyed this tournament…..hopefully they enjoy their trip to the states
The 50th Fr. Barry Classic at Jesuit High School will be December 12-14, 2024.
It should be another great tournament with the following teams participating:
Jesuit - Sacramento, CA
Archbishop Mitty - San Jose, CA
Brophy Prep - Phoenix, AZ
Cathedral Catholic - San Diego, CA
Jesuit - Portland, OR
St. Bernard - Playa Del Rey, CA
St. Ignatius - Sydney, Australia
St. Mary's - Stockton, CA
Brackets will be released soon.
Absolutely correct about the NCS. Seems most of the schools have deemphasized sports, especially footballThe system isn’t great because the NCS has a large number of small publics and very small privates that can’t or won’t emphasize sports (most of these don’t have football though). The NCL and HDN winners will be moved up for doing well and face a mediocre large school. This will largely leave a solid chunk of NCS school left out of the a section championship opportunity. This issue is worse in volleyball, basketball, ect… where there are even more small schools who can’t elevate their programs.
The similar system works better in SS and CCS though.
CCS has some protection to lower divisions, sometimes you’ll get a SHC in D3 or HMB in D1 but I think they’ve resolved these ridiculous placements.
SS doesn’t really have the small public schools, many stay in 8 man despite the #s for 11. Once your public has 1000 or so enrolled pure Calprep rankings makes more sense, less inherent disadvantages. Although the “luck” of a 1 seed or 16 seed is frustrating. You really have to treat the playoffs as an opportunity to play extra games, that’s all it is. Placements and opponents have a huge luck component to it.
Any predictions? Believe meeting is today so we should know soon. MC is a shoe in for the Open although Windsor gave them a heck of a game. I gotta think NCS will not load 2 very good smaller schools in the open. Both of these schools have a good chance to be in a RBG if they played at D2 level.

Di/Open should be very competitive. In addition to everyone playing one or more games against other CCS open teams (Valley Christian played 6 of the 7 other teams in the bracket in the regular season) everyone except VC played at least one non-CCS opponent that is ranked higher than any CCS team so they will not see an opponent of higher caliber than they have faced already.Everyone in D-I/Open has beaten someone else in D-I/Open.
Los Gatos beat Soquel. Soquel beat Valley Christian and Salinas. Salinas beat VC. VC beat Riordan. Riordan beat St. Francis and Serra. SF beat St. Ignatius, Serra, and VC. SI beat Serra, Riordan, and VC. Serra beat VC.
we have might have different definitions of relevant. In Fall 2022 they won CCS DII Football, and the NorCal DIII-A championship, losing the DIII-A state champ by 1 point. Winter that year they won CCS DI in soccer and basketball, and Spring 2023 they won CCS DII Baseball. They seem to be doing fine in the “Nobody Cares But Parents” Sports….
But as far as the actual sports that drive attendance and people care about Football, Baseball and Basketball they haven’t been relevent in 10, 12 and 5 years respectively….. 🤣

Why did San Mateo get such a huge jump and receive 7 more points. Jumping from #5 in D 4 to #8 in D3 seems crazy.CCS play-off projections after Saturday’s results
There are a few scores that are still not in the CalPreps system but I don’t think they will influence the seeding at this point. If they do I will come back and edit this post.
One assumption I made about the 40 teams that make up the play-off field is that the PAL will put Half Moon Bay in as a third automatic qualifier from the Ocean Division and limit the El Camino Division to one automatic berth which will keep Woodside out of the play-offs. If this is the case, Sacred Heart Prep will get the final at-large berth. If the PAL decides to have two automatic qualifiers from each of their two B Leagues then Woodside would go in. Half Moon Bay would still qualify as they would get the last at-large berth and Sacred Heart Prep would not make the field.
Open/D1
Riordan's win over St. Francis changed the top six seeds. One assumption I made that influences the seedings greatly is that St. Francis and Serra will not get a championship point for playing De La Salle as De La Salle is not eligible for the EBAL Mountain League championship. I also assumed that St. Ignatius and Soquel will receive a championship point for playing San Ramon Valley (even though De la Salle beat SRV) who is recognized as the league champion of the EBAL Mountain League. Obviously if this is managed differently in the section seeding meeting the seedings would change for the top four seeds as St. Francis and Serra would gain a point and St. Ignatius and Soquel would lose a point.

I assumed Kings Academy gets a point for Rio Honda Prep being a league champion in a three team league (something that CCS may want to address in the off-season). Even if KA losses this point it won't impact their seeding.

My memory may get fuzzy but I know that has been the case for the AAA but I am pretty sure CCS teams took points in the past from their OAL game against the regular season champion (for the past decade+ that has been McLymonds). Bellarmine used to play them frequently in preseason and they have played various other CCS teams over the years and my recollection is that they presented it as playing a league champion and were never challenged. Is that how it has been interpreted in CCS for their powerpoints for the last 20+ years?
