19. Marin Catholic (6-0)

Charles Williams rushed for more than 100 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Tamalpais to extend the Wildcats’ regular season win streak to 22 games. The Wildcats haven’t given up more than 14 points in a game this season.

20. St. Ignatius (3-3)

The Wildcats were held out of the end zone in a 21-6 loss at St. Francis, but stayed in the rankings in part to an earlier win at Jesuit and losses to Top 12 ranked San Ramon Valley, St. Francis and Riordan.

H.O.P.E. Showcase in So Cal

Caught some of the action at Cypress College this weekend. Defending state champ Etiwanda went 4-0 (without all-everything forward Kennedy Smith). Ontario Christian, with Kaleena Smith (no relation), likewise was undefeated. Quite a strong showing for Nor Cal. Clovis West won both its contests, as did Whitney. Pinewood/Fever went 3-0. Acalanes/Fast Break lost by 12 to Ontario, but won its other two contests easily. I thought Oakland Tech was going to be there, but didn't see them.

Carlmont's JV/Frosh Coach Julie Meade

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Carlmont's Girls JV/Frosh coach Julie Meade passed away unexpectedly yesterday. Coach Julie was slated to coach the revived Freshman team this season. Julie, a Carlmont grad, was also a Cross County and track coach. Julie is the daughter of long time Menlo coach Bob Meade. She will be greatly missed.

The Way-Back machine

A little palate-cleanser in the middle of the week. While looking through boxes in the garage I came across a magazine I'd saved from the year after I graduated from high school, the California Prep Football 1969 Yearbook. This magazine, and one for basketball, was produced for several years about that time. I thought it would be interesting to see who the top teams were then compared to now. If nothing else it shows that only a handful of teams have stayed consistently good over the years and changing demographics have had a very large impact on the football scene. Plus, it reminds me that I am a senior citizen who graduated 54 years ago.

I won't do all the sections but here are a few - and these are preseason rankings. These are all top to bottom top ten.

Sac-Joaquin: Mira Loma, Edison, Downey, Tracy, Bella Vista, Yuba City, Stagg, Sacramento,Johnson, Ceres.
North Coast: Alameda, Vallejo, Hogan, Pleasant Hill, Arroyo, Hayward, Terra Linda, San Ramon, Concord, Castro Valley
Central Coast: Los Altos, Riordan, Woodside, Soquel, Campbell, South San Francisco, Sequoia, Serra, Piedmont Hills, Los Gatos
Southern: Anaheim, El Rancho, Lakewood, St. Paul, West Covina, Santa Barbara, Redlands, Blair, Mater Dei, Loara
State Top Twenty: Anaheim, El Rancho, Lakewood, St. Paul, West Covina, Santa Barbara, Redlands, Mira Loma, Fresno, Alameda, Vallejo, Blair, Mater Dei, Los Altos, Loara, Hogan, Riordan, Gardena, Canoga Park, Pleasant Hill

The all state team had only one player that would have any resonance today - Lynn Swann, from Serra. Old-timers might also remember James McAlister, who played at UCLA.

Time has not been kind to most of these teams. Not even listed is the Central Section, where the top team was Fresno and all of the teams listed are way down in the rankings today. The same goes for the San Diego Section, where only Oceanside at number 9 is even remotely relevant today. Over the years schools at the very top of the food chain have come and gone (Cordova was once the top team in the state, now...........) and new dynasties have risen. Time waits for no one.

All CIF State Title football games to be played in SoCal

Mercury News reports that in addition to the one site where 5 CIF state bowl games had been played, two more sites in SoCal will host a collection of games.

El Camino College and Pasadena City College will be the additional sites.

My guess is that the top 5 games will be split up to ensure as much attendance at each site.

PCAL Week 7

PCAL Week 7

Last week
9-2 Overall 67-27

Gabilan

Salinas had a buy last week and somehow, they look like the team to beat. Palma needed a 2-point conversion in overtime to beat a bad Hollister team. The playoff streak could be in trouble. Monterey was punched in the mouth by a rejuvenated Soquel team. Aptos blew out Alvarez, for their first league win. Soquel, who Salinas beat last week 27-0, now is at full strength as their transfers from Santa Cruz are now all eligible to play. Some of these guys are really good. On a side note, it is a shame to see Soquel start to climb in the rankings, while Santa Cruz can’t even field a team. This is not transferring between private and public; these are kids transferring in the same district. I don’t like it. This week we get a great matchup between Aptos and Salinas. Winner will have inside track to the league title, but both still have tough games ahead.

Thu 10/05 Aptos (CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:00pm- Aptos finally had one of its patent “blowouts” last week over Alvarez. Salinas hopefully got healthy with the bye. Salinas D should be able to slow down the Aptos Wing T but will Salinas Offense be consistent enough to score? I think Salinas works out offense issue during the bye. Salinas 24-22

Fri 10/06 Monterey (CA) vs Hollister (CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm-
Monterey was probably a little over confident after the Palma victory the week before, combined with Soquel transfers back in the fold; they were humbled. Hollister maybe the biggest surprise/disappointment in the PCAL this year. Monterey 35-14

Sat 10/07 Soquel (CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
- Alvarez will not give up 68 to Soquel. Because Soquel plays slow deliberate football, they are not a big play team. But I expect Soquel to be in total control of this game from start to finish. Soquel 35-7

Mission North

The Santa Cruz situation is a shame. Not sure why there was a large exodus of player to Soquel. They are scheduled to play this weekend. Let’s hope they can at least put some points on the board. Scott’s valley and Seaside still seem to be the top 2 teams in the league, but North Monterey County has won 3 in a row and will have a chance to prove themselves vs Seaside. MVC is close to turning a corner behind a talented QB, but they just don’t have the depth to compete this year.

Thu 10/05 North Monterey County (Castroville, CA) at Seaside (CA), 7:30pm- Seaside had extra week to prepare after the Santa Cruz forfeit. They will need it to beat a very hot NMC team. I think seaside starts slow, but comes out ahead at the end. Seaside 24-14

Fri 10/06 Scotts Valley (CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm
- Scott’s Valley only loss this year is 21-7 Soquel. That los and the Willow Glenn win are looking better and better. Scott’s Valley 28-0

Sat 10/07 Santa Cruz (CA) at St. Francis (Watsonville, CA), 12:30pm
– I just hope Santa Cruz fields a team, they won’t win, but their roster will probably be about the same as St. Francis number wise. St. Francis 45-7

Mission South

Carmel took the drivers seat for the title with an exciting win over North Salinas. Side note; any coach on Carmel’s remaining schedule reading this: Just do an onside kick every time do not kick deep to them. Ditto for North Salinas. North Salinas was impressive, and they will challenge Alisal for 2nd place and the automatic playoff spot. PG will go to 6-0 after this week, but their schedule gets much, much tougher at the end. North Salinas, Alisal and Carmel are all still on the schedule in addition to long time rival King City.

Fri 10/06 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at King City (CA), 7:30pm- King City had a nice win over Rancho last week. But North Salinas is playing at a much higher level. North Salinas 38-7

Fri 10/06 Soledad (CA) at Pacific Grove (CA), 7:30pm
– PG will probably beat a struggling Soledad team this week, but that could be their last victory for the season (let’s hope so) . PG 28-7

Fri 10/06 Carmel (CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
– Carmel has played 2 emotionally charged, exciting games in a row. Don’t be surprised if this game is close for the first half to ¾. I expect Carmel to pull away, but a small letdown would not be unexpected. Carmel 35-21

Santa Lucia

The top 3 teams; RLS, Greenfield and Gonzales, all cruised to easy victories this past week. And they should not be challenged in this division until they start to play each other. Greenfield maybe the slight favorite, but RLS and Gonzales will be a tough out. A three way tie is a possibility. There is only 1 playoff spot, and I don’t see a second place team having a enough points to get an at large bid. So the winner of this division will get to play Palma in the first round of the DV playoffs. (Just kidding, sort of)

Fri 10/06 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm – Pajaro was able to get a win 2 weeks ago vs SLV, then take bye week to celebrate. But the streak will stop at one. Gonzales 35-7

Fri 10/06 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Greenfield (CA),
7:00pm -SLV has a couple of decent wins this season, but that Pajaro loss is baffling. Greenfield should handle business. Greenfield 42-14

Fri 10/06 Marina (CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 5:30pm
- These 2 teams match up pretty well. I think a lot of points will be scored as neither has a great defense. Going home team. Harbor 45-44

Week 8 Game Previews

Folsom (4-2) at Rocklin (6-0): Folsom will look to take another big step toward the SFL title as it travels to undefeated Rocklin, which is giving up 10 points per game This game features two of the best sophomore quarterbacks in the region with Rocklin’s Reeve Slone and Folsom’s Ryder Lyons. Rocklin has been Folsom’s toughest competition most years in the SFL.

Oak Ridge (5-1) at Del Oro (5-1): Both teams will try to avoid a 0-2 start in the tough Sierra Foothill League. Del Oro boasts one of the region’s best players in quarterback Caden Pinnick while Oak Ridge appears to have their full complement of defensive starters. Oak Ridge head coach Casey Taylor is at 199 career wins.

St. Ignatius (3-2) at St. Francis (2-3): St. Francis junior running back Kingston Keanaaina has been very good with 586 yards and nine touchdowns as the Lancers have played the top two NorCal teams and undefeated Helix of San Diego. St. Ignatius' three wins (Jesuit, Cathedral Catholic, Bellarmine) have been by a combined nine points. The losses have come to Top 20 ranked San Ramon Valley and Riordan.

Redwood (5-0) at San Marin (5-0): San Marin senior quarterback Dominic Ingrassia is completing 73 percent of his passes for 1,407 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Mustangs’ defense has pitched two shutouts. Three of Redwood’s five wins have come by one possession with the best wins coming against Enterprise and Rancho Cotate.

Colusa (5-0) at Pierce (4-1): Colusa quarterback Bo Coronado has thrown 16 touchdown passes with six touchdown catches apiece from Isaiah Travis and Landon Humphrey. Pierce has scored at least 26 points in each of their wins with its loss coming to Clear Lake (42-0).

Dublin (4-2) at Granada (4-2): Granada’s Quinn Boyd has thrown for more than 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns with three different receivers having at least 24 catches. After back-to-back losses to Windsor and Kimball, Dublin got back on the winning side last week against Hayward (20-13).

Edison-Stockton (5-2) at Linden (6-1): Edison has won four straight since a 1-2 start that included losses to Central-Fresno and Folsom. It does have a shutout win over Foothill-Palo Cedro. Linden is averaging 47 points per game behind a balanced offense that is averaging close to 400 yards per game.

Hilmar (4-2) at Ripon (3-3): During its current three game winning streak, Hilmar hasn’t given up more than 14 points in any game. Caden Bailey has 807 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Ripon has played three one possession games including a 49-42 win over Linden.

Vanden (4-2) at Vacaville (3-3): Vacaville has won 31 straight Monticello Empire League. Vacaville has lost to a pair of undefeated teams and Top 20 ranked Granite Bay. Vanden has won three in a row since a pair of close losses to Campolindo and Vista del Lago.

Capuchino (5-0) at Milpitas (4-1): Milpitas senior Jacob Alvarado has been good for the Trojans at more than 100 rushing yards per game. Capuchino is giving up nine points per game and this will mark its fifth road game in the first six contests.

Schools to watch for Pittsburg 2025 DB Jadyn Hudson

USC, Oregon and Ohio State remain the front-runners for the 2025 high four-star safety from Pittsburg, Calif., and a recent visit to Eugene went great especially as the coaching staff talked up how they’d use him in the defense. But more teams are being added to the top list as well for Hudson as Washington, Tennessee and Penn State have now made major impressions as well.

NCP Football Player Notebook: 2024 Prospect Watch

McClymonds 2024 offensive lineman Ahmad Robinson (6-foot-7, 280 pounds) has committed to Eastern Washington. He has really good size and drives defenders off the ball in the run game by getting his arms fully extended.

Mt. Diablo 2024 running back Herschel Turner (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) is shifty with speed and has been one of the region’s most productive backs. He has 1,584 yards and 25 touchdowns through five games. Turner was offered by Army this week.

Alvarez 2024 OL/DL Messiah Johnson (6-foot-4, 290 pounds) has received an offer from San Diego. He has good strength and is an athlete as seen in how he gets into the backfield on defense and plays on the move at offensive tackle.

Oak Ridge 2024 linebacker Gavin Molloy (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) returned to action against Folsom and showed his skills to not be swallowed up by bigger linemen and get off those blocks to make plays. Molloy is a key player on what is one of the best defenses in the region.

Windsor 2024 wide receiver Ananias Walker (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) had two red zone touchdowns in his debut for the Jaguars after transferring from Rancho Cotate. Walker showed off the variety of routes he can win on from a deep post to an underneath crossing route.

St. Ignatius 2024 wide receiver Pierce St. Geme (5-foot-10, 160 pounds) gets off the line well from the slot and is hard to bring down with his change of direction ability. He had 117 yards and two touchdown catches in the win over Bellarmine last week.

Valley Christian-San Jose 2024 wide receiver Kai Hamilton (6-foot-3, 178 pounds) is a good route runner who challenges defenses with his ability to get in and out of his breaks. After receiving an offer from Sacramento State in early September, Hamilton committed to the Hornets on Tuesday.

Hey guys, this is somewhat of an off-topic question as it involves a situation from one of this past weekend's NFL games but could relate to HS or college football as well. I'm very curious to know what the majority opinion is here.

There's been much debate (on another forum I frequent) regarding the Miami Dolphins 70-20 win over Denver this past Sunday, specifically on Mike McDaniel's decision to kneel on 4th down at the Broncos 27 yard line with :33 seconds remaining thus turning over the ball to Denver who ran one last play.

In a thread-poll conducted on this other forum, a majority of 116 people said that they would have attempted to tie or break the NFL scoring record (which is 73 points). Conversely a minority of 90 people said they would not have attempted to score any more points.

I know what my opinion is on the topic, and I have a good idea what I believe the majority here will say, but perhaps I might be wrong.

So, the all important questions is -- Would you have attempted to score more points while leading by 50 with under a minute remaining with a shot to tie or set the all-time single game scoring record or would you have opted to take a knee and turn the ball over as Mike McDaniel did?
