De La Salle vs San Ramon Valley

Not hyperbole, this may be the most important regular season game in NCS history. Not because this is the first time DLS will have faced a legitimate challenge for section supremacy, but because of the changes the section made to the playoff structure.

This new Open was designed with the idea that the Spartans were the dominant program and that there might only be one reasonable challenger to that. This year, that may not be the case. While I don't personally view Pittsburg to quite be in that stratosphere, they are still undefeated and I'm not sure that can be ignored.

In the past, DLS has successfully argued that despite a few losses, history matters and that should mean they deserve the top seed in the NCS playoffs. Ok, but could they still make that argument with a loss to the Wolves this weekend? If they lose, do they get the #2 seed in the playoffs? It's not as if the Pirates built their undefeated record against weak competition... Granite Bay, California, and Los Gatos are all quality teams. Does the NCS say that DLS deserves a second shot at SRV in the playoffs? Would they afford the Wolves the same consideration if they fall to the Spartans in a competitive game?

Pitt has an argument that was created by the CIF, itself. Serra knocked off the Spartans a few weeks ago and, due to the state playoff structure, they don't get a second shot at the Padres. Yes, they did get a second shot at Folsom last year, but that was in a lower division. You can state that if DLS were to get a second shot at SRV, it should be in a lower division.

So, what do you do? Leave Pitt out in the cold either way? Or do you replace the loser of this week's game with the Pirates, stating that they had their chance already? I don't see any strong challenger for Pitt the rest of the year except for maybe Liberty.

Right now, I'm of the opinion that Pitt should get the #2 seed. The loser of this week's game still has a shot at the D-I title, but this would mean that the overall dominance of DLS over the NCS is at stake this weekend. If this come to fruition, the Spartan streak of top NCS titles could come to an end before the playoffs even start.

As for the game itself, DLS has done a very good job against two good passing teams in Folsom and St. Mary's. Can they put together that type of effort against SRV? The Wolves did a really good job against one-dimensional McClymonds, eventually wearing them down in the second half for an offensive explosion. While the DLS conditioning is legendary, one could argue that this is what Orange Lutheran did to the Spartans. Calpreps has this game as a 7-point win for SRV.

You'll all see my prediction in the Pick'Em on Friday.

Dave Matsu - girls’ basketball coach at Mills High School, has died.

Dave Matsu, the longtime girls’ basketball coach at Mills High School, has died. He was 54.

Matsu succumbed to stroke-related injuries Saturday afternoon at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center. He suffered a stroke the previous weekend and had been hospitalized for seven days. He is survived by his wife Donna, and five children, Holly, Alex, Justin, Taylor and Kayleigh.

The longest tenured girls’ basketball head coach in San Mateo County, Matsu took over the strong Mills program in 2007-08. The Vikings reached the postseason in each of his 17 years as the official head coach. Bestowed with the 2022-23 Central Coast Section Honor Coach Award for girls’ basketball last season, his career culminated last season in Mills’ first CCS championship since 1985, with his son Justin serving as co-head coach alongside him.

Greg Moore - Former St. Mary's Gaels Head Coach

I really don't get it. This Head Coach - the only thing I observe both in person and otherwise is he's a Winner - has truly turned former woebegone baseball programs around - has built into said programs - principles that are Life Changing and has always put a good product on the field whether assisting or otherwise at U.S.F. - Washington University - Cal State Northridge as well as USA Baseball.

Along his various stops his fund-raising for new amenities and stadiums along with player stability programs are top tier.

It's also rough to read between the lines when an article says "a tight lipped" St. Mary's administrator has said "St. Mary’s and head baseball coach Greg Moore have “separated” effective immediately the school said in an online statement Wednesday afternoon. In a terse two-sentence post, St. Mary’s said “A national search for a head coach will be conducted immediately.”

The Head Coach and staff were filled almost immediately: https://www.stmarys-ca.edu/news/gaels-bring-back-eric-valenzuela-lead-baseball-program

There was no reason given for Moore’s departure.

10. Rocklin (7-1)

The Thunder had more than 400 total yards and grabbed two interceptions in a 35-14 win over Del Oro. Derek Keeley rushed for more than 100 yards and Nate Martin caught two touchdowns from Reeve Slone. The Thunder end the regular season with road games against Granite Bay and Oak Ridge.

Reardan’s Senior/Family Day A SUCCESS with 56-42 WIN, over the Monarchs

In a afternoon that Mitty could not care about predictions or Board Hoopla, they truly tried to create that @TrapGame scenario that the naysayers or doubter counted on.

But before we get to that, let me acknowledge that the #NewAttitude Of Reardan HS, was ON display during PreGame activities. I can remember a day at Riordan HS when Senior Day, was about finding an available coach to walk with Senior as they were acknowledged at their last home game. Today there was “None Of That”!!!

The #NewAttitude that Coach A-Rav has USHERED into the program has officially merged Senior Day with Family Day, SO MUCH that the slim Indian college bound WR from the South Bay kept the lai ON during the game, that was given to him by a senior’s family member. I was personally humbled by the attendance of Seniors having sometimes a dozen family members taking the time to ATTEND/RECOGNIZE & WALK with their HS Prep Football Student/Athlete.

As much as the Mitty strategy WAS the run game AND well executed to minimize Riordan’s Air Raid offense TO KEEP THEM off the field. Riordan responded with their OWN-“Mean Machine Of the Offensive Line & RUN GAME” of their Own. This was best exampled as Riordan, who was basically able to score at will all game, ran the clock down to finish game. But I would be A MISS if I didn’t SHOUT OUT some recognition to the DC who made some Key Position changes to STOP Mitty in some key 4QTR processions.

I heard a Riordan Coach say, “Metal sharpens Metal” and the Monarch’s provided that SO the Crusaders can be Poised & Sharpened as the go into the WCAL @guanlet the next two weeks.

Game of the Week Poll - https://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/week-9-game-of-the-week-poll.29168/

Serra 54, Bellarmine 16

It was ugly. Really ugly. These two all-boys Catholic outfits have been playing football against one another since 1946. It's the oldest league rivalry in what is now the WCAL. But Saturday's grim affair in San Mateo was about as non-competitive as we have ever seen. Bellarmine, to be honest, is a shell of what it once was. Serra, of course, had a lot to do with the Bells' total meltdown this weekend. The game was essentially over after nine minutes had been run off the clock. The Padres, celebrating their annual Polynesian Day, had scored 27 points and the San Jose Jesuits were in a state of shock. If you arrived a bit late, there was literally no point in hanging around. It was that bad. Serra's team speed on defense frustrated Bellarmine on just about every possession that mattered. Sweeps? Forget about it. Dump-off passes into the flat? A waste of time. QB keepers? Please. Maybe Riordan's collection of athletes can solve some of that next weekend when the Crusaders visit West 29th Avenue. That remains to be seen. But it should be more interesting than what the Bells had to offer. The old Serra/Bellarmine rivalry is in a shambles right now. Sadly, the Bells are becoming a WCAL afterthought. Oddly, that just feels weird.

Takeaways: De La Salle beats San Ramon Valley 33-27 in OT

1. This was the best game I've seen this year. A lot of high level play and also some mistakes I'm sure both teams would want back. The teams combined for seven turnovers including four in the red zone.

2. San Ramon Valley struck first going up 3-0 and were inside the 10 yard line looking for a 10-0 lead before an end zone interception by Ant Dean. Later De La Salle got out to a 27-12 fourth quarter lead but it allowed a touchdown and then couldn't corral an onside kick to help set up the game tying drive for the Wolves.

3. The biggest advantage for the Spartans was their line play on both sides of the ball. The offensive line got strong push most of the night in creating holes and sealing the edge. Defensively, De La Salle got a consistent pass rush led by a strong night from Chris Biller and Matthew Johnson. San Ramon Valley quarterback Luke Baker made them pay as a runner (see below for more on that), but he didn't have many comfortable drop backs.

4. While Baker was able to extend plays and make big completions down the field, it was his running attempts that caused fits for De La Salle. With the Wolves spreading the field, Baker had a lot of open room in the middle of the field. He showed off some good speed to gain the edge against linebackers and make defenders miss in the secondary. Baker took a lot of big hits in the loss in adding another chapter to what has been a fantastic senior season.

5. Is Marco Jones the top prospect regardless of class in NorCal? I'll have more on Jones next week in the player notebook, but the junior turned in a fantastic performance. He is a game changing defender who made numerous plays coming off the edge. He also provided a physical presence at receiver including a number of key catches.

6. Jonathan Guerrero is a big play weapon and it is needed for the Spartans. He had a 70 yard touchdown catch and nearly broke a kickoff return earlier in the game. He can get lost in the shuffle of players to watch, but that skill set is vital for De La Salle going forward.

Week 9 Preview: Big Game at San Ramon Valley

De La Salle (4-2) at San Ramon Valley (6-0)

One of the top games of the regular season has arrived as San Ramon Valley will try to deploy its passing attack led by quarterback Luke Baker. On the other sideline, De La Salle will look to control the game flow with a strong running game that includes junior Dominic Kelley. This game also features two of the best linebackers in NorCal in De La Salle’s Drew Cunningham and San Ramon Valley’s Marco Jones.

Antioch (5-1) at Liberty (4-2)

Antioch hasn’t won more than six games since 2018, but they are primed to do it this year in winning five of its first six. Quarterback Larenzo Mayfield rushed for 114 yards last week in an 18-17 win over Heritage. Liberty sophomore Jaxon Bell has rushed for 987 yards and 17 touchdowns as the Lions have also given up 17 total points in their four wins. Their losses have come against Los Gatos and San Ramon Valley.

Chico (5-1) at Pleasant Valley (4-2)

The Almond Bowl will have Chico senior running back Dion Coleman, who has 1,075 yards and 13 touchdowns. Pleasant Valley, which has won four straight games in this series, gave up an average of eight points per game in their wins before winning a 57-42 shootout against Enterprise last week. Vikings sophomore Brave Curcio had 104 rushing yards and a touchdown in the win.

Granite Bay (5-2) at Oak Ridge (6-1)

Oak Ridge’s Erick Orme Jr. and Jasen Womack have combined for more than 1,100 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. The Grizzlies’ running attack is led by Carter Jackson and Isaiah Ene (1,400 yards and 18 touchdowns). Both teams have played Del Oro with Granite Bay winning 53-28 and Oak Ridge winning on the road 42-35.

St. Mary’s-Stockton (6-1) at Tracy (6-1)

Aidan Vanos is Tracy’s leading rusher with 10 touchdowns, but it is a multiple rusher attack that is averaging close to 250 yards per game. Kenneth Moore III and Cayden Ward have combined to catch eight of the 11 touchdowns from quarterback Samson Hunkin. The Rams have scored at least 38 points in each of their wins.

Rio Americano (7-0) at Vista del Lago (7-1)

Vista del Lago senior Matt Long has 621 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns as the leading target for John Koett (1,668 yards and 22 touchdowns). The Eagles have won seven in a row since a season opening loss to Manteca. Rio Americano has been one of the surprise teams of the fall in holding opponents to less than 10 points per game. In league play, Vista del Lago has a 45 point margin of victory average while Rio Americano is at 23.

Turlock (2-5) at Downey (6-1)

The story for Turlock starts with a record that is influenced by a tough non-league schedule which included Folsom, Rocklin and Clovis West. It will now see if the early competition pays off with a trip to Downey. The Knights are paced by junior quarterback Carson Lamb and his top target Ethan Woodmansee (also a junior).

Hillsdale (6-0) at Menlo (6-0)

Hillsdale has given up more than 15 points once this year including a win over Sacred Heart Prep. Hillsdale quarterback Erick Waugh has thrown for more than 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns. Menlo receiver Brady Jung has more than 100 receiving yards three times this year including 139 yards last week against Palo Alto. Menlo’s wins of note include Menlo-Atherton and American Canyon.

Willow Glen (4-1) at Leigh (4-2)

Leigh, which has won two straight since losses to Mountain View and Santa Teresa, has given up 14 or less points in five of their six games. Willow Glen quarterback Cedeno Chavez has thrown for 895 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for 323 yards and five scores. The Rams have won four straight games since a loss to Scotts Valley.

St. Vincent (5-1) at St. Bernard’s (5-1)

St. Bernard’s senior Wyatt Simoni has been a star for the Crusaders with 818 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, 529 receiving yards and four touchdowns and 54 tackles and 12.5 sacks. On the other side line is sophomore Mason Caturegli, who has rushed for 355 yards and two touchdowns the past two weeks. He has also logged 17 tackles.

NCP Football Player Notebook: Wazzu Commits lead Top 20 Teams

Granite Bay 2024 linebacker Frank Cusano (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) has 23 total tackles through the first two SFL games against Del Oro and Whitney. He has good size and does a really good job of flowing down to the action and finishing off with big hits. He is committed to Washington State.

Grant 2024 running back Wayshawn Parker has been putting up video game numbers for much of the season. He is averaging 14 yards per carry to tally 908 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is a patient runner with good cutback ability and the speed to break the big play. Parker is committed to Washington State.

Sacramento 2024 running back Lamar Radcliffe (6-foot-2, 220 pounds) has run for 857 yards and six touchdowns despite a 1-6 record for the Dragons. Radcliffe still possesses the athletic ability that let him burst onto the scene as an underclassman. The Utah commit has good size, gets in and out of breaks well and gets to top speed early in his rushing attempts.

Marin Catholic 2024 defensive end Charlie Seymore (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) is back on the field after missing his junior year due to injury. He has been able to win up front and racked up the sacks through the first half of the season. Seymore was offered by San Diego.

Inderkum 2024 defensive back Baron Taylor (6-foot-0, 170 pounds) has also been offered by San Diego. He lines up as the deep man in the middle of the field where he reads action quickly and makes plays going back and horizontal. He also can come down and make plays against the run.

San Marin 2024 quarterback Dominic Ingrassia (6-foot-4, 200 pounds) is one of the best uncommitted senior prospects with his quick release, ability to get the ball down the field and movement in the pocket to let plays develop. He has completed 72 percent of his passes for 1,771 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Amador Valley 2025 quarterback Tristan Ti’a (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) made his debut for the Dons with six touchdowns. He puts good touch on passes and can extend plays by moving in the pocket or taking off for short runs.

Game of the Week Poll - https://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/ncp-pickem-week-8-game-of-the-week-poll.29143/

Peak Padres

When Patrick Walsh was hired to resurrect a moribund Serra football program in 2001, he was quoted as saying the Padres were "a sleeping giant." It didn't take long for Walsh to validate that view. Serra tied for the WCAL championship in 2002, the school's first share of the league crown since 1972. The Padres have continued to build on those early years of the Walsh regime. Today, they sit as NorCal's top program. They've been in that position for three years running, defeating 24 of their last 25 WCAL opponents (including playoffs and the shortened 2021 spring season) as the week began. Serra, since its initial varsity football season in 1946, has never seen such a consistent display of excellence. That includes the 1967-69 run that was led by players like Jesse Freitas, Tom Scott, Lynn Swann, Tom Caselli, Pat McGlennon and others. What Serra students, staff and alumni are watching now is historic. It's "Peak Padres." The current defensive group is the finest ever at the school. The best example: A 28-0 rout of De La Salle. Any debate on the question has been decided. The starting QB, Maealiuaki Smith, is Serra's best pro-style, pocket passer since Tom Brady, and before him, Jesse Freitas, a national passing leader at San Diego State and a backup to Dan Fouts with the NFL's San Diego Chargers. High praise indeed. This is the Serra program's apex. The 2023 season is far from over. A lot can happen between now and the close of the campaign in December. Riordan (in particular) and others lurk.
