Metro League Battle

The Metro League is probably the most interesting situation in the area. Grant sits comfortably at number 1 but from the 2nd to 6th spot it can go any way.
Burbank and Monterey Trail both sit at 5-4, River City is 5-5 and Laguna Creek and Mcclatchy is 4-5 in league record.
Even though Mcclatchy is currently in 6th if they win out they would be in 2nd or 3rd place.
Burbank and Trail are in the most control of their destiny but do play each other on Wednesday. So one is getting another lost guaranteed.
Laguna Creek has 3 games left 2 of teams they have beaten before and the other was a slim lost to Grant. That Grant game would be tough but I wouldn't say it's out of reach.
River City has only 2 games left which are to Mcclatchy and Trail. They lost the Mcclatchy and beat Trail in the first go around. This team is not one to sleep on and if they won out would jump Trail do to head to head win tie breaker.

Teams will be fighting it out for the playoff spots.

So what are yall thoughts going into the week? Who pulls it off and who do think falls short? One thing I'm willing to bank on is that it's gonna be some good games to watch.

Venture Academy Showcase

Got here a couple minutes after the first game started. Cornerstone Christian v. Cosumnes Oaks. I was hoping that the tine Antioch school with a good record could at least give Oaks some trouble despite school size, considering Oaks’ lackluster record. Ummm…. Nope. It’s 40-11 Oaks at the half.

Anyway, the only game I plan to really go all keyboard crazy on is the finale with Campo vs. Lincon-Stockton…. But I’ll update a bit here and there from this tiny lil gym.

A look at the PAL

With league play upcoming shortly, it might be worth a peek at what's in store for the 17 schools in the PAL. In the North, it's all Half Moon Bay, a defending CCS Division 4 champion, all the time. Again. If the Cougars (7-1) lose a league game in 2022, it will be a serious surprise. They have too much talent for the rest of the division. In the South, the picture is much more iffy. Hillsdale (9-1) and Burlingame (7-1) have had the most impressive pre-seasons thus far. The former is a smooth-shooting mix of experienced kids who move the ball and play well as a unit. The latter features the best high-low post combo in San Mateo County, 6-1 Elana Weisman and 5-11 Ava Urich, a pair of outstanding underclass prospects. BHS has to be considered in the title mix. Aragon, with powerhouse Megan Grant (a world-class softball player _ she's a member of the USA teen national team) back in the lineup, should be right there with the Knights and Panthers. At Capuchino, it all hinges on the health of big-time 6-2 center Mele Afeaki. She's been nursing a knee injury. If she can't play, the Mustangs, who lost just one game this past spring, are in very deep doo doo. With her in the lineup along with long-distance bomber Hailey Hoff, look out. Menlo-Atherton is another championship contender if the breaks go its way in the South's decidedly unbalanced schedule (the Bears will play title contenders Hillsdale, Aragon, Capuchino and Burlingame just once each). Sequoia, a defending CCS Division 1 champion, lost three key starters and its coach, Steve Picchi, a state Coach of the Year (for the second time), in the spring. The rest of the South ranges from questionable to no way, no how.

Campo @ Acalanes

This game *should* be a fairly easy one for the Cougars, but ya never know in league games…. Kids know each other and their games, coaches know each other and their tricks, etc. etc.

Wait, what am I talking about!??

Cougs should win easily…. But still, the Cougs were down by 10 at the half here a couple years ago before hitting the afterburners in the 2nd half to win a close one…

Anywayyyyyy…. Right now, the Coug Frosh are taking care of business…. 42-24 late in the 3rd.

Vanden at Antelope at 2 p.m. Saturday today

Vanden (17-3) at Antelope (15-4) at 2 p.m. today, Saturday on the NFHS Network. This will be interesting for NorCal level seeding down the road. They play in different divisions at the Sac-Joaquin Section level, but could be placed in Division 1 at the NorCal level.

At large Playoff Birth in Sac-Joaquin Section

Hey all, looking for clarification on the SJ section at large playoff birth determination process...in reading the section web page it states..."In Divisions I-IV, any school not in its league’s top 3 that is ranked in the Top 15 by MaxPreps in their last rankings prior to the selection process will be added to the tournament as an at-large team." Is the MaxPreps ranking they speak of Top 15 in their division? Or Top 15 in the entire section? Thoughts?

Campo at Clayton Valley Charter

Fresh off a big home win vs. Northgate, CVC tries to add another car on their upset train as they face the Campolindo Cougars in a couple hours.

CVC is 14-7, but with quite a few close losses to high-quality teams, including a 50-45 loss to the Tough Kids at Moraga in mid-January.

Campo is 18-1, ranked #1 in NorCal by Maxpreps. They are 2 games in front in the DFAL standings a the moment.

Playing in this gym is always tough; should be one heck of a game!
