Mock Drafts

In the MLB.com mock draft, it has Elk Grove OF Derek Hill going No. 17 to Kansas City. Stanford 3B Alex Blandino (St. Francis) is slotted at No. 26 to Boston.

In the Baseball America mock draft, Hill is slotted to the local San Francisco Giants at No. 14 and Blandino would stay in the Bay Area with the Oakland A's at No. 25.

Both mocks have the San Diego Padres as having strong interest in Hill. He was also mentioned as have the best speed among the high school prospects in the draft.

We Lose a Great HS Baseball Coach

Last night at San Jose Muni the season ended for Menlo School and the brilliant career of the Head Coach, Craig Schoof, came to a conclusion. Craig retired this year as the AD and head coach at Menlo, During his years as the baseball coach, the team went from 0-22 to numerous CCS titles. Our son played for Craig and was inspired, as were so many others, to play beyond HS. Some of the mental aspects our son learned from Craig inspired him to believe he could play beyond college, which he did, and to have a passion to become a baseball coach, which he is.
During his career, Craig did not always have the best talent, but his coaching always made his teams compete at a level most would not have guessed.
My position is Craig's coaching was always worth one run per game.
In this article, John Reid does a really nice job of capturing some of the essence of why Craig made his mark and it didn't matter if team had Stanford recruits or one kid going to a D3. Menlo and CCS have lost a terrific HS baseball coach.

WCAL 2014 Fastest Athlete & Top Track Marks

Looking at the initial track marks from the St. Francis Invitational it doesn't appear there are any "Burners" coming from the south end of the WCAL. Bells, SI, Riordan, Serra & Mitty all participated and no 100 meter times under 11.0. IN fact looking at all times posted there are no initial CCS times in the 100M under 11.0 with plenty in the 12's.
Of the 5 WCAL schools the marks were all in the mid-high 11's.
So does that leave SI, VC or SHC to produce the WCAL's fastest for 2014? Doesn't look like anyone will come close to Bell's Joey Sanfillipo who went to state finals in 100M in 2013.

Here's the break-down and nothing too spectacular in early season marks, tho Bell's Grant Bush took the triple jump win.

Granite Bay 3 Rocklin 2 - Pitcher Over Use???

Granite Bay comes back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Rocklin 3-2 in 9 innings. GB take the season series 2-1. Rocklin wins the league and is the #1 seed from the SFL while Granite Bay is the #3 seed......but that's not the story. The story is about a coach pitching a kid 100 pitches on Monday then bringing him into a meaningless game to throw 33 pitches 2 days later! How much control should a parent have in that decision (if it's my kid I pull him off the field)? The kid in question has a D1 scholarship and based on his performance Monday has a lot of interest from MLB teams for the draft next month. In addition to the pitch count outlined above he threw 30-50 pitches in the bullpen to warm up 2 days after throwing 100 pitches.

I don't normally post on this board but you have to wonder if a coaches pride to loose a meaningless game (they had already won the league) affects his decisions and how much should the administration of the school step into these situations? Is this the parents, administration or coaches decision????

St. Mary's Rams in the SJS Div 1 Finals "again"

St. Mary's is making their 6th straight appearance into the SJS Div 1 Finals, having won 3 out of the last 5. SJS Dynasty???

Certainly, the Rams may be a slight underdog for this match-up vs Davis (Davis ranked 3rd and St. Mary's ranked 16 in MaxPreps). But, impressive back to back to back wins 13-0 and 11-0 vs Tokay, and a 12-0 win vs Turlock, after losing to Turlock in the 3rd round 8-13, might lead to a very good match-up vs Davis. Davis went through a tough North bracket forced to play Elk Grove twice losing the first game 2-3 and taking the North championship with the win vs Elk Grove 5-2.

St. Mary's is 13-1 in their last 14 games, with the loss being against Turlock in the playoffs.
Davis is 10-4 in their last 14 games, with 3 of the 4 losses being against Elk Grove, the other vs DLS (5-8).

Very early in the season, St. Mary's lost to Elk Grove 3-7 and had beaten DLS on the scoreboard 2-1 but suffered the loss vs DLS due to forfeit. Davis has a 2-3 record vs Elk Grove this year, with the victory in the North final making this losing record vs Elk Grove meaningless. Davis beat Rocklin 6-1 in the playoffs. St. Mary's has a 4-1 victory over Rocklin very early into the season.

This looks to be a very interesting SJS Div 1 Finals. Good luck to both teams!

*** updates made after learning Davis lost to Elk Grove in the first game.
