I hate to say it, but the SJS had a really bad night.
Placer was upset by Los Gatos

Antelope was upset by San Ramon Valley
McClatchy lost to Heritage
Vista Del Lago lost to Aptos
Christian Brother lost in OT to American (CBS lead 17-5 after 1Q)

The only survivors were:
Laguna Creek beat Montgomery, 60-55
Del Oro beat Presetation, 49-32
Vanden beat Moreau Catholic, 64-45

Here's one example of how pathetic the seeding was for NorCal divisions below the Open and I: In DIII, the No.16 seed Lick-Wilmerding beat No.1 Menlo-Atherton in OT in Atherton. So what, you might say. Well, Lick had already beaten M-A on a neutral floor in December. What's more, Lick had a grand total of just two losses coming into this game. How in the name of John Wooden's ghost could the NorCal authorities seed these two teams in this fashion? Ridiculous.

I've been wondering that also. Lick also beat Moreau Catholic and Moreau had a better seeding. Its possible Lick and St Mary's Berkeley meet and again and the winner heads to State for DIII

I think that we all have pretty much come to the conclusion that the seeding committee knows not what they do. One or perhaps two mistakes yes? but not this many. I am even just referring to seeding prior to some of the upsets that transpired last night.

To add to that. What made anyone think that the SJS had enough top-quality teams to even justify an open division section playoff. I mean even considering that the section teams just had a collectively bad night ( it can happen ), still just going on what the teams did prior there was only one team that should have even been in the conversation for being an open team.

The SJS performance justifies the need for an open IMO. The best competing against one another regardless of school size would give a clearer picture of the sections depth or lack there of.

Not sure how the SJS Section going 0-5 in D1 Norcal justifies the need for an Open in SJS? How does that give a clearer picture of the SJS depth this year? Most likely those same 5 teams that lost yesterday would not have beaten SMS, and would have all been placed in D1 Norcal where they lost last night too.

Maybe after SMS beat them by 40 they would’ve been put in D2 instead of D1.

the interesting thing is that SMS only beat Granite Bay and Oak Ridge by single digit margins in the D1 Section playoffs. I guess we will see tonight how SMS does against Cardinal Newman. Obviously SMS is the only SJS powerhouse year after year after year. NCS proving how strong they are this year, I wonder if it will show tonight as well. Looking forward to a great game! Let's hope the referees don't get in the way of this one, LOL.

I think SMS is a different team without Perry ... still pretty good, of course, but not as deep. And she's a very good player.

With the top teams in an open section tournament it might be easier to see which teams truly belong in the NorCal Open division. Example, I think Mitty showed they were much better than all other CCS teams. Combine that with regular season results and one could see that Pinewood did not belong in the Open this year.

A key however is that just because a team is in the section open division does not mean they are automatically in D1. The committee would have to evaluate the strength of each section. And there is the problem, work and knowledge required.
