Interesting -- the Vanden boys won as well, and the schedule shows them, the No. 3 seed, hosting at 7 p.m. At least in NCS, the higher seed plays later.

Also, I've heard the Vanden gym is small. Is that true? If so, having a doubleheader there might not work. CIF recommends 1,500 capacity.

I know Vanden played a game at Fairfield earlier in the playoffs due to a scoreboard issue

I wouldn't say the gym is small, is a regular sized gym, with nice sized bleachers, and space on each baseline which is enough room for cheerleaders. I am not sure about capacity though.

the vanden high community must be very proud of their basketball teams. my congratulations.

Clay, if it seems appropriate, please convey my best wishes for a speedy recovery to Elle Louie.

What happened to Elle Louie?

Saw a note Clair Steele had 34 points last night

in 3rd quarter, went down after collision, stayed down, audibly crying. she's a tough kid, so I'm thinking major pain. stayed in locker room for about a quarter of game time. hopping on one leg off the court w assist. returned in 4Q, slight limp, but went down again on hard foul, pulled off the free-throw line by coach, again audibly upset.

unknown lower leg injury (knee? ankle?). of course, it's her private concern. just hoping she recovers quickly, both for her (minor injury) and for the team (major contributor).

I do hope Elle's injury is not serious. She is, like Clair, part of the engine that makes Miramonte run so well. Hopefully she is able to play, and play at full strength, in the next game.

Elle will play Saturday -- and by the way, the game is at 4 p.m. at Vanden, with the Vanden boys playing at 7 -- but who knows how effective she'll be. Sometimes it's easier to come right back in before the swelling sets in. But the trainer will be working on her daily and hopefully she'll be close to 100%.

Clair Steele had 34 points Tuesday, a simply incredible performance. Elle and Jordan Bryant only had nine between them, which is low for them but others stepped up -- especially Colette Kirkpatrick, who made all four of her free throws and her only three-pointer. Michaela Thomas also made two big free throws late, and that's what you need from your bench to survive these games.

Valley Christian played very well, shot very well and had us scouted. Good coaching, good players ... we were lucky to win, really. We needed some girls to rise to the occasion and they did.

Other players stepped up.. That is good coaching there Clay, congrats to you and your team. Funny how well prepared teams have role players step up in key moments.

It's at Vanden. Girls at 4, boys at 7. Could be a major homecourt advantage for the slimmest of margins between a 1 and 2 seed.

Vanden got moved up to D2 in girls by the Section due to previous performance, same as Miramonte.

As I understand it, they will not empty the gym between games -- they just wanted to make sure there was plenty of time for the awards ceremony and for Miramonte fans to leave and Mission fans to get inside. (Given our recent attendance, however, I don't think there's much to worry about in terms of a crowd.)
