MaxPreps Top 25 Announced

Of the 25, five are in CA, all in SoCal except for St. Joseph in Santa Maria, which is almost SoCal.

#3 Roosevelt of Eastvale
#5 St. John Bosco
#10 Harvard-Westlake
#19 Sierra Canyon
#24 St. Joseph-Santa Maria

At a glance, this looks to me like an NFHS member list, no "academies" that I know of.
Good list. Roosevelt and St. Joseph are solid teams with most of last season's rosters returning. The other three teams added players, especially SC, from the high school transfer portal that may influence how quickly they can gel. Top teams for sure. Looking forward to seeing which teams from Northern California are ready to meet the challenge on the court.

My thoughts on first 4

D1. OR vs Folsom in rematch of last year with Folsom winning by 21+. OR is playing very well but I don't see anybody challenging Folsom in SJS.
D2. Absolutely the best division. loaded. I don't see Rocklin winning. I was really disappointed with them against OR. In fact they will have a tough time with Manteca. I like St Mary's or Grant to prevail but I'm leaning more toward St Marys.
D3 - Oakdale has played a really good schedule with a recent close loss to Manteca. I think they are in good position to come out ahead.
D4- Twelve Bridges rolls. Probably time for them to move up a div or 2.
Agreed. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if either St. Mary's, Manteca or Grant wins D2. All three of those teams are darn good.

SJS Playoff Brackets

Since the SJS changed the way their teams is slated in the Divisions, SJS D1 has become the worst playoff Bracket in Nor Cal…..

All the best teams are in D2, pretty dumb…. Need to move to a Competitive equity format where all the best teams are in D1…. I am sure none of the schools care though because no one wants their season ended by Folsom…. 🤣
I *think* (no facts to back anything up, just an opinion/feeling) that the SJS office believes they set up a long term competitive equity format with the "continued success" aspect of their playoff format/rules. In their mind, I think, the good programs will continue to move up, regardless of enrollment size and everything will be sorted out over the years. Right or wrong, my opinion is that this is the general thinking of the SJS office.

El Cerrito

The opening sentence of the article notes that EC self reported the illegible players to the NCS section. I thought, OK, maybe Rincon just made a mistake. But then I remembered and it was also disclosed in this article that it was the school administrator who reported the violations and not Rincon himself. In fact, Rincon was placed on administrative leave.

I hope EC can get their program straightened out for the good of the kids in the programs the El Cerritos community.

Folsom vs Centennial 2025

Yes, it’s too bad we haven’t seen any confirmation of that yet, but I wouldn’t expect it while the season is still going on….

What I find more interesting is how Folsom has opened the door for a game with MD…. So why not schedule that game for next year…. The coaches have supposedly talked and the last minute game wouldn’t work this year but what about next year?….

If Folsom really wants a game with MD it seems like that is on the Table and it would be an amazing spectacle to see MD come to Nor Cal to play Folsom, they will bring a Ton of Fans…..

Next year is going to tell us if Folsom is for real…. Either Folsom plays Cen10 or MD or Both or it’s just another year of Smoke and Mirrors for Folsom…. 🤣
It definitely will tell us a lot in terms of Folsom’s progress…are they a national level type team - as far as public school’s can be (i.e. centennial) or just a state level power…my desire is to see them play BG one day (as DO did years ago) or a Texas school..if they can beat Centennial next year and play MD..maybe that will open up their scheduling options

Pump the brakes on the Twelve Bridges thing. They have had 2 good seasons in a row. No section championship. Being a new school it gets athletes. Like Pitman. For the first few years they dominated Turlock. Now the new wore out. Now Turlock dominate then.
After reading the projections for CCS it's confusing. In SJS You know where you play in playoffs. It works, but there are flaws. In my opinion. Central Catholic has to play D1. They are not a D1 team. D2 but not D1. But I do agree with the rest of your post. My worries are Oakdale winning this year
And most likely again next year. Wes Burford is only a jr. So is the whole back field. In Oakdale. They would be pushed to D2. Oakdale is a D3 team. Enrollment they are D4. But from continued success they have to play D3. That's where they belong! Going to check out Downey again this week. Hopefully run into Carl!
I’ll be there this week, so look for me.

If you break the rules that blatantly , it seems like this penalty is the right one. I feel bad for all of the kids that are in the program that weren't part of the rule breaking though.

Penalty is not harsh enough if you ask me. 3 year play off ban and give every kid currently in the program who was not involved one free trip out of town and to another school. Make sure the school doesn’t allow it to happen again

Interim head coach Tim Johnson told BANG on Monday when informed the probability his team would be banned: "Our student athletes use football as a source where dreams and goals are reached. We're letting adults dictate the lives of our players that most of them have no relationship with them, which I feel is unjust. ... Now they've been robbed of the opportunity to compete, which is disheartening."

Goes right back to what I said

Powerful quote right here:

Suggestions for Modifying CCS Play-off rules

If this does happen, (Alvarez beating Palma would be a big if) the CCS needs to consider the "eye ball" rule that NCS has. Alvarez would be 2-4 in the Gabilan tied for 4th place while both Palma and Hollister would be 1-5. Alvarez would of beaten both Palma and Hollister yet those 2 teams leapfrog Alvarez into the playoffs? That just seems wrong to me.
The whole point of the CCS system is to remove subjectivity from the equation. Everyone knows the rules at the beginning of the season, so it's incumbent on each team to schedule accordingly. Alvarez scheduled all B teams, while Palma scheduled (effectively) two A teams.

@PALbooster, as always you go above and beyond in your explanations, greatly appreciated.

Similar thing happened in 2019 to Alvarez when Carmel was seated into the playoff field by virtue of more power points. That year they both finished 2-4 in League tied for fifth, Alvarez won the head to head, but Carmel received the playoff spot based on power points, I believe Alvarez was the first team out. But that was only 1 team and they were tied in the standings, this would be 2 teams finishing a full game below them. Just does not sit well.

Alvarez still has to go and beat Palma for the first time ever....

I did find the appropriate PCAL by-law - Section 23.4

For sports where CCS play-off points are used for seeding, teams from the PCAL applying for the CCS Play-offs on an "At-Large" basis will be seeded into the tournament by the League based on the ranking of those league teams with respect to CCS points for playoff purposes, without regard to the division placement or division standing. If there are teams tied in CCS play-off points the ties will be broken using the tiebreakers stated above beginning with head-to-ehad competition.

You can debate the fairness. On one hand if you used the WCAL rule and made the league present teams in the order of their league finish then you run the risk that no-one from your league gets placed as an at-large team as a weak 5th place finisher blocks a 6th or 7th place team with more CCS points from getting in. The WCAL doesn't have to worry about that given all the extra bonus points all their league teams receive by virtue of league play (This year 7.5 points vs 2.5 or 3 points for Gabilan teams). I did a quick look at the numbers I show that if the Gabilan put Alvarez first in line for At-large they would likely be 6th (hard to see how hard they would rise in CAlprpeps if they beat Palma). but it is likely that Carlmont and Sobrato will finish ahead in the calculations for At-Large. So the result for the Gabilan would be no at-large teams vs two by putting Palma and Hollister (or Aptos) forward.

SJS Playoff Notes

The section puts together a notes package each week during the playoffs. Here are a couple that caught my attention:

Four teams (Bradshaw Christian, Hughson, Rodriguez and Twelve Bridges) enter the playoffs with perfect records. In 2023, that number was two; in 2015 it was a record 10 teams who entered the playoffs at 10-0. Historically speaking, at least one of those three teams will win a championship, as there has been at least one unbeaten team win a Section championship for 23 of the last 29 years.

We have three teams in the playoffs for the very first time. And a very large welcome to perhaps the top story of this first round: Armijo is here for the first time. The Fairfield school opened in 1891 and has never made the football playoffs, even though Super Bowl champion and Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Famer George Martin played there in the late 1970s. Also in the playoffs for the first time: Elite Public Schools and Wheatland.

Take a bow, Trans-Valley League! All seven of your teams advanced to the playoffs. Three leagues qualified six teams apiece to the postseason: The CVC, FVL and the VOL. And three leagues each qualified five teams - The SAL, SFL and TCAL.
