Is the Referee shortage so bad they’ve got to hire convicted felons to officiate games? How is a convicted felon even allowed to officiate HS Sports?

Im Bringing Back An Old Story That I Wrote For Norcalpreps, Years Ago

Yesterday I went to the Crush in the Valley, mostly to see the public schools as the recruiter for the GIBT.
There was a team from Kentucky playing ,and an older gentleman from said state, was taking tickets at the door.

During a break, I happened to ask him if he ever heard of the book, “ When Cuba Conquered Kentucky?
Not only did he know of the book, which took place in the early 1950s, he was from the area. He knew the coach and several of the players such as Doodie Floyd, Drennon Bagwell from the book.

I laughed, and said that Cuba seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere, and “ He laughed and said it still is."
We talked about basketball, him from Kentucky, me from Brooklyn, and it was like we were from the same place. It was the highlight of my day.

Anyway here is the report about the book, I’m once again posting up for you to read if you care to.
It is a book, I think every hoop fan should read, for the knowledge and history. Of how High School hoops, Influences communities and people.
I used to be a writer and scout for Norcalpreps, and this is one of the reports I published.

When Cuba Conquered Kentucky “ A Book Review”

It was 1952. A tiny rural high school of 150 students, weaves it’s way thru their Sectional, Regional, and State playoffs.
There they meet up with a perennial state power with 3000 students, beating them for a state championship.

Sound familiar? No, it’s not tiny Milan Indiana high, from the movie Hoosiers. Another true story.
It’s the true story of Cuba Kentucky High School. And it was a national sensation in it’s time.

The book’s author , Marianne Walker tells of a chance encounter with a friend, and is introduced to her husband, who was a player on that team.
The book opens after the team loses at the state finals, the year before, and sets the stage for what’s to follow.

Cuba Kentucky was in a tiny hardscrabble corner of Western Kentucky, without electricity or indoor plumbing for the most part.
It is hemmed in on three sides by rivers, with no bridge access. A place, even most Kentuckians knew nothing about.

The kids were sons of white share croppers , who of all things, took as their inspiration and style of play, from the Harlem Globetrotters. They would even come out warming up to Sweet Georgia Brown.
Using a fast break, pressing, and highlight style of play, they caused a sensation wherever they played.

It is the story of how a small group of kids came together, in this unlikely spot, at the same time, with talent and love for the hoop.
The author is very descriptive of time and place. I found the book interesting from both a historical and sociological perspective.

Allow yourself some patience for the Author’s indulgence in her narratives.
A story like this is a history lesson in High School basketball, as well as a study in people and culture.

I enjoyed this book and highly recommended it to any basketball fan, or anyone who appreciates the unlikely, when it happens.

Oh, and why is the town called Cuba? You’re just going to have to read the book for that !!

Here’s wishing you great hoops

We Want To Invite You To The 71st Annual Gridley Invitational

We are thrilled to invite you to the 71st Annual Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament (GIBT) – an event that has brought together basketball teams and communities from all corners of Northern California for over seven decades.

A Legacy of Unity & Excellence

In 1953, John Valentino, a teacher and coach at Gridley High School, had a vision: a tournament that would not only showcase top-tier high school basketball but also foster unity among people from diverse backgrounds. His idea was simple but profound: bring together individuals from different races, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds to build lasting relationships through the game of basketball. His vision became a reality with the first Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament, and his legacy continues to this day.

GIBT Through the Years

The GIBT has evolved over time, maintaining its reputation as a prestigious and welcoming tournament. From 1953 to 1977, it was a post-season event, gaining such popularity that some teams chose it over the Tournament of Champions (TOC). In 1978, when the CIF decided to consolidate to a single post-season tournament, the GIBT took a brief hiatus. However, in 1979, it returned as a pre-season tournament, continuing to draw top-tier talent from across the region.

The heart of the tournament has always been about more than just basketball. Local families host visiting teams, creating a sense of community and camaraderie that transcends the game itself. Many lasting friendships have been formed over the years, thanks to the spirit of togetherness that Valentino envisioned.

This Year's Teams

We're excited to welcome the following teams to the 71st Annual Gridley Invitational
  • Branson - Modesto Christian - St. Mary's - Gridley
  • Saleisian - Clovis North - Dublin - Folsom
Dates - Dec - 11 th - 12th - 13th
Brackets: Will be finalized by the end of November.
  • Location: Gridley High School

Good Folks, Good Vibes, Great Hoops

Here’s to another great year of Good Folks, Good Vibes, and Great Hoops!

Best wishes for a successful season,

Here’s wishing you great hoops

Just a @TheR thought off season,…

Has Lynbrook surrendered?

The 2025 Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division (C-level) schedule does not include Lynbrook. In 2024, they went 0-7 in league play, 0-8 overall. They were outscored 412-6 and were grossly over-matched even in an extremely weak league. It appears the San Jose school has tossed in the towel for varsity football, at least for the upcoming season. On a brighter note, Lynbrook is awash in high=achieving National Merit Scholarship winners.

Second Place Trophies

This society has become so soft as Charmin they reward second place. They reward well we won this and that. When it comes to boys basketball and the unfortunate CIF ruling so we get to watch 200-300 ranked teams play in state titles, that is exactly why participation trophies stand.

Participation is great. One year I was asked by our JV head coach hey I am busy can you coach the DLS summer league tournament. I said sure I can. DLS put us in this small locker room near the football field, hell it felt more like a damn bathroom to he honest.

As they walked us back there was a garbage can full of hardware. They packed second place in a Jesuit summer tourney and back in those days there was no love lost between DLS and Jesuit. They did not like each other at all. Unlike today every one is all buddy buddy.

Point is this. When it comes to boys basketball in the state of California either win and hang banners or STFU. As a SH grad we play SI for one of the longest standing trophies hands down that takes many people to carry. JD Vance couldn’t hold it and let it collapse.

And due to that the WCAL was a win or go home league. SH could have been 6-2 and SI 1-7, if they won the Bruce that is all that matters. But if you smack your lips and have loaded rosters for Christs sakes and can’t get over the hump, well everything else previous doesn’t mean jack shit.

WIN OR STFU. That’s the bottom line. And if your kid didn’t win, OH WELL. Cause many WCAL kids have. PERIOD. Will be back in November to read all the excuses again.

And if it was up to me someone should choke the CIF and remove the open and get back to enrollment basketball. I personally am not going to watch a full team without any D1 or future NBA players play a state title game. It’s pathetic, it’s an injustice to basketball, and with NIL, maybe even the guys who can ask for paychecks may not even make it to Sacramento and let the rest of their team head up there. The open is killing California High school basketball.

Katley and Tofi

I was just talking to a very close friend in Southern California. And told her how both Division 3 state title runner ups and champs played with LeBron being her and I are going to the game in LA tomorrow. And I had to laugh for a minute. Who at THE R played with 40 year old Lebron. Now don’t get it twisted I know a fella who played on the same AAU team from Riordan with Jason Kidd. But did anyone else play with such dynamic talent. Two state D3 title winners played with LeBron period. And Leon period. And Kendrick period. So take your history, shove it, and for all of us STFU. Your kid and anyone after has never come close to such per pre Prolific era. SO AGAIN STFU.

Sincerely, THE HIGH SCHOOL WIZARD.

Joey Curtin I applaud you for doing what you do. We all know coaching kids at such a capacity is not easy. But you stepped up and have tried hard as hell. But do yourself a favor. Get rid of the poisonous clowns sitting behind you. You don’t need. Riordan has always been a very reputable school on the level of basketball and you literally have a village idiot who literally thinks he knows more than even you. Eliminate the BS and continue to teach the kids. I will always respect that. Get back at it. And don’t stop. But eliminate the village idiots asap.

St. Mary's-Stockton wins Boras Classic, extends win streak to 15 games

An 0-3 start with one total run is fully in the rear view mirror for St. Mary’s-Stockton (17-4) extended its win streak to 15 games after beating Rocklin 6-1 for the Boras Classic North title.

St. Mary’s came into the tournament ranked No. 3 in NorCal and boasted a strong one-two punch at the top of the rotation with Tanner Grove and Nico Bavaro. In a tournament like this, your pitching depth is tested and the Rams responded with Giani Camacho, Jacob Korbrin and Minh Vu combining on a four hitter in the semifinal win over St. Ignatius. Then, Jeremy Krause got the start in the championship game with 5.1 innings of one run ball.

Junior Dax Hardcastle has been the offensive standout for the Rams with three home runs over the four tournament games and a near .500 average over the season.

The Rams have seven games left in the regular season with two three game series against Lodi and Lincoln-Stockton and a solo game against Cardinal Newman. They beat the Cardinals 8-1 in the opening game of the Boras Classic.

Quinten Marsh is one of the region's top two-way players and has now hit safely in 12 of 13 games.
