Looking at the initial track marks from the St. Francis Invitational it doesn't appear there are any "Burners" coming from the south end of the WCAL. Bells, SI, Riordan, Serra & Mitty all participated and no 100 meter times under 11.0. IN fact looking at all times posted there are no initial CCS times in the 100M under 11.0 with plenty in the 12's.
Of the 5 WCAL schools the marks were all in the mid-high 11's.
So does that leave SI, VC or SHC to produce the WCAL's fastest for 2014? Doesn't look like anyone will come close to Bell's Joey Sanfillipo who went to state finals in 100M in 2013.

Here's the break-down and nothing too spectacular in early season marks, tho Bell's Grant Bush took the triple jump win.

@Rmbr26: Yes. SanFlippo was a blur last year. One thing I noticed, though, that many football players from Serra, Riordan and VC have performed well at either the Varsity or F/S level in the running events. There are seven football players that will be on Riordan's varsity next season (Verba-Hamilton, Boone, Thomas, Sanders, Norman, Novello, Wilson) that have posted some good times at the 100M, 200M, 400M and 4x100MRelay and 4X400Mrelays. Speed was the main thing that has been lacking from the Crusader the past few seasons.

jordan24 - I'll def make note of those players & watch to see what kind of impact they have this coming season - that is def some talent that the Crusaders can use!

Looking at the CSS top track & field marks this season so far I see the WCAL's fastest 3 are all from Bellarmine with the 7th, 9th & 10th fastest times as follows: Mcauley/Bells - 11:18, Bush/Bells 11:21, Silva/Bells 11:23, so as posted initially no real burners this year from WCAL will be going to state.

A few other notes & I do mean a few - not a real strong presence by the privates this season in track:

* Orloff of Serra has the 3rd best time in the 200 at 22:40.

* Orloff of Serra has the TOP time in the 400 at 48:91 so Orloff could be considered one of the fastest in WCAL as well based on 200 & 400.

* Bells as usual have a good 400 relay coming in at 4th at 43:72.

* Serra at 5th in the 1600 relay at 3:38:93.

* McLarnan of the Lancers in the 800 is 3rd at 1:56:48.

* Godsil of Bells is 5th in discus at 148-10.

* Vong of Bells in Longjump at 21-9.5 good for 6th.

* Stofer of Bells in POle VAlut at 14'7 for 3rd place.

* Lee of St. Francis in shot put at 49-1 is in 4th place.

* Triple jump has Bush from Bells in 3rd place at 45-5.

** Orloff from Serra & Bush from Bells are the 2 top athletes from the WCAL with Orloff looking to go to regionals in both the 200 & 400 while Bush could have a chance in the triple jump.

Yes just looking at CCS top marks in this mornings Mercury news, that is a big surprise to me that Serra's Kelepi Lataimua came in at 11:09 in the 100. Lataimua is only a soph this year and saw plenty of playing time on Serra's football team as a RB and I believe some action at CB as well. With 3rd year RB Kava Cassidy returning next season as Sr Serra should have one potent run game.

It would make sense that in 2 years Lataimua could easily be under 11.0.

Valley Christian and Bells have some speed. Seems they didn't have a few go out on the track team.

Palma has alot of speed in the underclass (frosh and juniors - 2017 and 2015 classes with 2015 decent). Finally getting some classes with speed on the football field.

Gibbons (10.77 100) of Palo Alto plays football- a 6-1, 180 lbs WR as is Palma's Kasey Cory who is 6-3, 200 WR that ran a 11.07.

Riordan soph Raymone Sanders ran a 10.97 100m against St. Francis yesterday. He is one of the projected starting RBs for next year's varsity team. 5 other sprinters/relay that have all placed in the CCS Top 8 will be starting their Varsity FB campaigns next fall.

So nearing the exciting time of track & field for the year as headed into the CCS Finals today to see who advances to regionals.

The 100M is the premiere event of interest & here is the line-up:
[Note: no sprinter from WCAL qualified for the finals in the 100M]

Fastest CCS Time: Givens of Palo Alto 10:77

CCS Finals Qualifiers:
Morris - Santa Cruz 10:87
Stoller - Santa Cruz 10:90
Givens - Palo Alto 11:03
Pacheco - Palma 11:03
Lanovaz - Los Gatos 11:12
Butler - Piedmont Hills 11:14
Rashidi - Burlingame 11:15
Miller - Pacific Grove 11:16

WCAL Qualifiers of Note:

400 Relay - Bellarmine at #2 qualifier: 42.73 [* for whatever reason Bells qualify in most years in this event, ??]
400 Meters - Orloff of Serra at #2 qualifier: 48:39
800 Meters - McLarnan of St. Francis at #4: 1:57:25
200 Meters - Orloff of Serra at #1: 21:64 ** Top CCS time set in quarter finals.
1600 Relay - Serra at #1: 3:23:07 ** Top CCS time set in quarter finals.
Triple Jump - Bush of Bellarmine at #3: 44-11
Shot Put - Maumalanga of Valley Christian at #3: 50-11.75
Discus - Godsil of Bellarmine at #3: 161-4

WCAL Girls Top Qualifiers:

1600 Relay - St. Ignatius at #2: 4:00:08
1600 Relay - St. Francis at #4: 4:01:46
Discus - Stone of Valley Christian at #1: 136-8 ** Top CCS mark set in quarter finals.
Long Jump - Janachocwski of St. Ignatius at #4: 17-8.50
Shot Put - Bruckner of Valley Christian at #1: 44-5 ** Also has top CCS mark of 46-1.5 during season.
Shot Put - Stone of Valley Christian at #2: 40-9

Looking at times/marks of various events it looks likely the WCAL will advance perhaps 6-8 athletes to the regionals prior to the state meet. From past history most CCS qualifiers will be eliminated in the regionals & only the "cream of the crop" will advance to state. Based upon the times/marks posted I do not expect any of the WCAL athletes to advance to state this year.

That says a lot for Palma & the size of their student body & hopefully some of that track talent will lend itself to this coming seasons football team - its been awhile since Palma has been a power in the CCS and would be nice to see them again near the top challenging the best WCAL teams. How long ago was that when Palma tied DLS??

The team that tied DLS was in 2004/2005 and had a 7-3-1 record. They lost to VC in the first round of CCS Open Division by 4 pts. VC won the Open Division that year, That Palma team had Chad Bozzo at QB who actually started at SJ State U at QB as a frosh. Bozzo was one of the top athletes in the section that year and would have had a very promising career as a Spartan but was injured against San Diego State (torn Labrum) that pretty much ended his college career.

Palma had a couple seniors in the sprints (both were very good football players) that opted out after their soph years. The rest are underclass. The junior who placed 9th in CCS in the 100M is a big and fast WR, a soph will be a DB, and a frosh (my nephew) was 5th in CCS for his frosh class in the 100M and is running frst leg in the 400 x 100M at State (He broke Palma's schools frosh records in the 100M and 200M) . He will play football as well and invited to USA, but probably JV due to all the depth at Palma next season. One frosh who is also fast and was MVP of the USA football international game in Texas for the 16U game will be on varsity next season and get playing time (He would have broke Palma's frosh 100M record if not for my nephew). Palma has the potential to be very good if they put in the work. Indications are that they are working hard, but will know more. Monterey High also has lots of speed and Pacific Grove has a big kid a frosh Zack Miller who almost may be a beast in football.
