Final CCS Play-off Projections After Week 10 - Aptos opts up

There are many pros and cons in the CCS playoff format and we could go back and forth all day. I think it is pretty watered down when you let a team, no offense SHP, but how the hell do you make the playoffs with 2 wins? You should at least be .500 to get in. I don't care who you played, if you only won two games you didn't earn the right to be in the playoffs period end of story.
So you prefer teams in WCAL to schedule softies to make sure they hit that .500 mark rather than the tough games? I'm all for reducing the number of playoff teams considerably, but if you have 40+ teams make the playoffs, I'd prefer it to be the top 40 teams in the section rather than those who schedule weak opponents to get in.

Prep 2 Prep projections...way different than PAL Booster who I think is accurate. Thoughts?

http://www.prep2prep.com/sports/boysfootball/2016/PlayoffProjections/CCSPlayoffProjections.aspx

It's not so different, really. There's only one difference in the Open brackets.

I have a small problem with P2P calling theses "projections" since they're not actually projecting anything. They're simply listing teams by their current playoff points. PAL actually has projected the results of the last week of the regular season and is more accurate overall due to this.

It's been proven many, many times that the 4th place WCAL team is typically much stronger than most 2nd place teams throughout the rest of the section. Besides, exactly who, in the WCAL scheduled soft in order to make the playoffs?

Serra took on Pittsburg, St. Mary's, and De La Salle.
St. Francis played Oak Grove and Palma.
Valley Christian played Campolindo and Pleasant Valley.
Bellarmine played Clovis North, Menlo-Atherton, and Del Oro.
Mitty played Pittsburg and Aptos.
St. Ignatius played Marin Catholic and Campolindo.

Where are the "soft" schedules?

I think the big difference here is that PAL Booster projected wins and losses based on CalPreps rating, where Prep 2 Prep assumed "games that have not yet been played are included in the point totals (and counted as losses)."

... which is pretty much impossible, since so many playoff teams are playing each other this week.

In other words, P2P is incredibly lazy.

No, this is not what they did. They simply didn't do any actual projections, while calling their brackets "projections".

Weak teams, tough teams, it doesn't matter. You don't win only 2 games and get rewarded with a playoff berth. WCAL is regarded as a top league in the state so they should be scheduling tougher opponents regardless, which they do.

That's what a projection is. They used their data and believe those teams will win. Of course that doesn't mean they will be correct. The past couple of years their brackets have been pretty close.

I just feel like allowing so many teams into these playoffs is getting out of hand. to get to the playoffs it has to be EARNED. I was not ok with even Del Oro getting a playoff berth at 4-6 last year even if they did win a state title. seeing 4-6 and 5-5 teams in playoffs to me is just ridiculous. I remember when I played making the playoffs was a challenge. We had to win AT LEAST 7 games. and i hate to say it but i think they expanded the playoffs for the " $$$$$" more teams= more games = more ticket sales. It is always about they $.

Didn't you suggest they double the playoff field when you started this discussion.

You're part of the problem Chachi.

CCS 2016 Play-off Picture post Week 10 (Friday night)

Going into the last day of the season the 23 teams for the open division are set and the results from Saturday’s games will only impact the seeding. The final at-large spot will come down to a draw on Sunday between Mountain View and Saint Ignatius. If Mountain View wins the draw they will be placed in Division II and Aragon will move to DIII and if SI is drawn they will go in DIII. DI is set regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s games and any opt-up scenarios. For the non-open play-offs all 10 automatic berths are determined as well as three at-large berths. Saturday’s session will determine the final three at-large spots for the non-open divisions.

Opt-ups – The two teams with an ability to opt into the open will be Aptos (projected 8-2 and 27.5 points) and Carmel (projected 10-0 and 28 points) regardless of the outcome of today’s games. Aptos is currently playing without their starting QB and it is unknown if he will return for the play-offs and Carmel lost their 1,000 yard rusher in week 8 for the season. In the event that one team opts Sacred Heart Prep would be the team pushed down into the non-open division. If both teams opt up the second team to be pushed would be Mountain View if they are in the field or it would be either SI or Palo Alto if Mountain View does not make the field.

Yeah, they need to sack up like the other sections and drop this weak stuff.

Yes troll, keep up.
Sd, SS, NCS and SJS all to much bigger degrees have sacked up.
If we are ever going to get to a real playoff, these types of moves will lead us there.

Sadly, NCS has followed the CCS goofy idea of a advancing losers in a football playoff.

PALBooster,

One other little detail.... If Bellarmine beats Serra today, Wilcox would end up with 21.00 points instead of 20.83 (Valley Christian co-champ instead of tri-champ). This would result in a three-way tie between Wilcox, Salinas and Santa Teresa for the #6-8 Large School Open Division seeds. Common opponent would be Pioneer, which all three defeated. So, then it would be a blind draw for those three seeds..

Agree?

Didn't you suggest they double the playoff field when you started this discussion.

You're part of the problem Chachi.
its called sarcasm. the CCS playoffs are watered down and every one gets in ..... the WCAL should have a minimum of 3 teams in the same playoff bracket... they are scattered all around in these weak 8 team brackets...

That is correct - there are a few games this afternoon that impact final point totals. If they turn out different than what is projected I will make the changes

Sadly, NCS has followed the CCS goofy idea of a advancing losers in a football playoff.
As long as CA clings to its sectional playoffs and its all inclusive mentality it will never happen. Two teams tops should be advancing out of each league if your goal is to ultimately get a state champion. Weaker leagues get one. Zero at large.

Advancing losers in a playoff has been a CIF staple for decades. See the sports that have had state playoffs.

Final CCS 2016 Play-off Picture post Week 10 – Aptos is opting up

23 spots for the open division are set. The final at-large spot will come down to a draw on Sunday between Mountain View and Saint Ignatius. According tt eh Santa Cruz Sentinal Aptos has decided to opt up. Aptos starting QB returned to play in week 10 after missing the last 4-5 weeks. Carmel lost their 1,000 yard rusher in week 8 for the season and struggled to defeat King City and Pacific Grove who did not qualify for the play-offs. It looks like Carmel will not opt up. With Aptos moving up, Sacred Heart Prep would be the team pushed down into the non-open division. If Carmel does opt up the second team to go down would be Mountain View if they are in the field or it would be either SI or Palo Alto if Mountain View does not make the field. Again, It is unlikely that Carmel will opt up.

You state a football playoff will never happen due to the sections then instruct to look at other sports that have a state playoff.

Maybe think that through a little longer.

Final CCS 2016 Play-off Picture post Week 10 – Aptos is opting up

23 spots for the open division are set. The final at-large spot will come down to a draw on Sunday between Mountain View and Saint Ignatius. If Mountain View wins the draw they will be placed in Division II and Aragon will move to DIII and if SI is drawn they will go in DIII. DI is set regardless of the final at-large draw and any opt-up scenarios.

Opt-ups – The two teams with an ability to opt into the open will be Aptos (8-2 and 27.5 points) and Carmel (projected 10-0 and 28 points).
