CCS scores of note from 12-13

St Francis 62 Fremont 53. Lancers stay unbeaten. Fremont has had its ups and downs with increased competition.

Crystal Springs smoked Summit Shasta 63-46 in a spirited rivalry game. Crystal (2-1) had a surprise loss to Aragon to start the year. But when its stalwart trio of seniors plays well, they remain a tough squad. 19 for Jemma Lacap. 17 for Rae De La Cruz and 13 for Maile Bateman.

Evergreen 57 Menlo Atherton 47. Strong bounce back win for Evergreen (6-2) after dropping one to Los Gatos. Menlo Atherton (5-4) should be a different and stronger team when its transfers become eligible.

Good crowd and matchup as Pinewood got by Los Gatos 57-52. Pinewood (4-0) got 20 points from Vallory Kuelker. Los Gatos (4-1) had 18 apiece from Nicole Steiner and Ashley Childers. Little doubt that both teams will be in the open bracket come February. Los Gatos could run the table till then.

North / South State Bowl Games Tally

The first series of games for the North / South State Bowl Games are done.

D-7AA was won by Ferndale. Fairfax looked strong in the beginning but Ferndale changed their offensive strategy and strengthened their defense. Ferndale 29-21

D-6AA St. Vincent looked pretty strong throughout the game although it was close in the first half. SV 27-6

D-2AA was the first win by the South when La Serna overwhelmed Grant. Grant's QB, Alexander, was hurt late in the first half and that was a real game changer. La Serna 21-19

North 2, South 1

Jim Soden Tourney at Terra Nova

Finals: Sacred Heart Cathedral 57 Riordan 55 OT (spirited back and forth down to the wire)
Semis: SHC 60 Priory 47 (wasn't that close. SHC was up 25 and sat its starters in the 4th quarter)
Semis: Riordan 58 Menlo 39 (didn't see this one).
Consolation: Priory 71 Menlo 33 (a rout from the start)

Irish, now 6-0, have weathered the loss of Inez Gallegos well. Their guard play, again, was excellent. Reza Po won tourney MVP. I don’t know anyone in NorCal that I’d rather have shooting free throws late in a game. She must have had eight. Riordan, 7-1, will definitely compete in its first year in WCAL. Its guard tandem of Senior Ashanti Dias and Freshman Tallyah Nasol was nearly the equal of SHC. Will be fun to watch these teams play at least twice more.

Priory thrashed Menlo by forcing and capitalizing on a ton of turnovers.

More Weekend Scores 12/8-12/9

Mitty 76 Marin Catholic 20
Mitty 81 Moreau Catholic 26

St Francis 50 Moreau Catholic 35
St. Francis 49 Marin Catholic 42

Good weekend for the WCAL. Mitty and SF both 2-0 (with very different margins of victory). SHC 3-0. Riordan 2-1 with a loss in OT to SHC.

Los Gatos 57 Evergreen Valley 49 Wildcats stay unbeaten.

BOD 44 Windward 38.
Etiwanda 70 BOD 40.

The Dragons split on a southern trip. Beat a Windward team that isn’t quite what it used to be, and got hammered by the defending open champs. Sophomore Jayla stokes had 24 and 9 v. Windward. With Quinteros and Cosgriff in her class, BOD is going to be strong for years

State championship bowl games

Well, here we are... the grande finale of the high school football season. From summer workouts to challenging (or not) pre-league schedules to the do-or-die (or not) sectional playoffs to the CIF regional bowl playoffs (or not), 30 teams remain in pursuit of a state CIF trophy. At three sites in southern California, 15 teams will be looking to rise to the challenge and hang banners up in their respective gyms.

As I detailed over the last few weeks, the CIF had a major choice on what to do with Central Section D-I champ, Clovis North. I gave both examples of how it could go, but emphasized that if they really wanted to retain the competitive equity model, the Broncos should have been placed in the south. Well, they were placed in the north. As a result of the shifts due to that placement, in many divisions, the NorCal team could be considered one full division higher than their SoCal counterparts. Here is a summary of the matchups as I see them:

I Get To Put Gridley To Bed

A tournament Queen was Crowned. Her name is Giselle Fuentes. It’s a tradition dating back since the tournament started. Imagine 1950’s Indiana and you get the idea. Yes a Tournament Queen

The top Scorer was Conner Amundsen with 70 points.

Now I am going to tell a story, so your gonna want to pay attention.

Jay Olsen has the scoring record for Gridley. He scored 105 points in the 3 games. That’s 17 baskets a game folks. Done before the 3 point line was a established.

“ NOW HERE IS THE GOOD PART ”
Just for a lark, I reached out to Coach Lindsey, at Burbank High School. I asked him did he remember Stephon Harris. Harris Played for Burbank in 1999. Stephon’s Total ended up 104 points, when his shot rimed in and rimed out. The Gridley crowed went crazy.

Coach Lindsey connected him with me, and Stephon called me. I reminded him about his total. He thought that number would have been broken years ago. He said he lived in Tacoma Washington.

I said if you are ever in California, I will always put your name down on the guest list. WELL GUESS WHAT !!!
He came to the Tournament !!! And he brought his kids with him.

And Lo and behold, Jay Olson was there too. They had a great time. Jay had even been a teacher at Burbank, when Stephon was a student.
I have to tell you, that made my day. That was the Cherry on the top of the cake. “ Isn’t that why we love High School Hoops “

It is my honor to help make this tournament what it is. There is nothing quite like it. You just have to come and see for yourself.

Here’s wishing you great hoops!!
