Cardinal Newman vs. Clayton Valley this Friday

Agree MC415 I was thinking a 28-14 type game before. That game is now 42-7 or so. But, does Newman have anybody at QB that is a secret weapon behind Jordan? I mean at the HS level most of the time you are lucky to have 1 good one.

I'm told -- and this is third-hand from HS students so don't give it too much credence -- that their #2 QB is average at best, but that their "emergency" QB is their WR Wallace (who will also be their starting PG on basketball this year) and that he is brilliant, but they they want him on the field so that's why he's not the backup.

A "real life Sonoma County CN Homer" doesn't even know the accurate information!? WTF ;)

And every day I wake up NOT in Sonoma County is a good day too ;)

Jobs are plentiful here :)

True to form, you are not working today. Typical ;)
Guys...stop picking at each other...There's information out there that people want to hear or read about and you guys can help out.....

Wallace is a stud. Played varsity hoops since Fresh year and he's excellent football player. I'm betting he's the guy.

Yeah, he's fast and an amazing athlete and could no doubt do well with their read-option, so that would make sense. But I have no idea if he's had reps in practice. Might make more sense to try Connor Rubattino. He's got a couple years experience at QB. The result is probably not going to be pretty no matter who's back there.

Newman is going to move to D4. The small public schools in the north bay and up the coast are not happy!

I wouldn't be happy about it either. It just looks bad. You schedule all of these high profile schools like CVC and St. Marys, proceed to lose, then move down in divisions.

Normally, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But, you are now in the same division as small town schools like St. Helena, which are public and draw some the town population. CN may be D4 enrollment, but draws from all over the county and beyond.

I would be mad if I was another local D4 school. But, I can't say this move by CN surprises me...at all. If I spent 12k a year for my kid to attend HIGH SCHOOL, I would be expecting wins too...and it wouldn't matter what division! ;)

Have fun celebrating playoff wins over Fort Bragg and Kelseyville.

Private and Charter schools make up 16% of the NCS football teams and have won 62% of the section titles in the past 10 years. It'd be nice to separate public and private schools in the playoffs like New Jersey does. After all the one and only private school In D1 has won the section for the last 23 years.

I personally like what states like Alabama does. They use a multiplier for enrollment in regards to private schools. That helps level the playing field between public and private. I think this is something CA should look into if they don't want to separate public and private.

I'm not a fan of the D4 move. Newman has already done well in D3 and has a history of playing up. In baseball they play in D2 and do very well. A better question is why in the world would be a school like St Mary's of Stockton, CVC, etc run the risk of losing to a d4 school like Newman. St Mary's was pretty damn close of having a big blemish on there schedule. If Newman plays in D4 I think we will see a weaker preseason which is a shame.

CN playing in D4 is pathetic. Cronin is an excellent coach, but this decision is weak. I guess if you want to be a big fish in a small pond then this is a good move. Privates should be forced to play up AT LEAST one division. They have an unfair competitive advantage against the "real" small schools. This is too bad.

I really hope Marin Catholic doesn't follow CN and petition down as well

For all us long time CN fans, or at least for me, this is a little like a punch in the gut. A lot of CN pride came from the fact the cardinals always played up and took on the toughest competition that was reasonable (and sometimes unreasonable, i.e. Oaks Christian). It's really quite a jolt from the traditional competitive philosophy of CN and Coach Cronin. I wonder why?

I agree, and that's a really good question. If I had to guess I'd say that there are a very few squeaky wheel parents who want a championship and are agitating for a move so they can get one. I've heard of similar rumblings in other sports but didn't think anything would ever come of it.

If they really do it I'd hope that the NBL tosses them out. No point in playing D1 and D2 teams during regular season; go play St. Helena and Middletown and see how the parents like that.

I agree with what everyone is saying. You obviously have a competitive advantage at the current enrollment and that is why you have always played up in divisions. ALL OF A SUDDEN, you drop ONE, most likely TWO of your first games, and petition to move down in divisions.

This doesn't send a good message to the kids. I also understand how private school parents can be...pushing for wins...pushing for a championships. Many parents think if they paid all this money to send their kid there, they deserve a championship. This is just wrong.

Not many CN fans are going to give a crap about a D4 Championship. I'd personally rather see a 6-4 season against strong opponents, than a 10-0 season against "nobody's."
I don't think the early season losses have anything to do with the decision to move down. Historically, Coach Cronin always schedules 3 tough pre-league games to start the season, knowing the team could go 0-3, 1-2, 2-1, or 3-0. It didn't matter (except against Central Catholic), because the point was to toughen the team for league play and playoffs against equal or superior opponents.
One thing that may be happening is that CN is not enjoying the theoretical advantage of a private school draw, in football, that most people assume they can. If you look at the teams the last 3-4 years, they haven't had the size, numbers, speed, talent that they had prior, and now they're only suiting up 30 varsity players. One or two great players each year isn't enough to sustain a strong program.

I understand what you are saying. But, it still goes back to the message that it sends.

So, you are basically saying that because we aren't that strong this year, we want to play in a lesser division so we can win. Then, when you have a stronger team, you want to move up divisions to prove you can win there. Why not just pick a course instead of "playing the game" every other year or so. It doesn't make sense to me.

Also, you may want to read the article above. The author claims you are playing the defending D2 state champions tonight. You are not. CVC lost to Redlands East Valley last year in the title game.

These decisions will become more wide spread with the new state bowl system. In a lot of ways, this is the right decision for Cardinal Newman. Get a section title and enter the regional bowl field. This loophole needs to be fixed by the NCS. SJS has forced up teams in the past.

Did I say that?

Have other small private schools like Justin Siena or St. Mary's or Salesian played up in the past? can these schools compete with Newman or MC?

Depends on what sport. Everyone generally plays the game differently.

Newman has to feel good. Playing without one of the best players in the class of 2017. Might be a tough 2nd.

Just as I said...that 80 plus man roster would wear them boyz from Rosetown down!
